Recruitment drive?
It hit me when Chris reminded me about it.
“Got it. I’ll wash my face and head over now,” I yawned while saying.
“Don’t just wash your face before coming over. The interviews start at ten, so you should dress yourself up properly. It’s important that you take this seriously! I’m telling you now that all our other classmates are putting in a lot of effort for this school recruitment. Everyone is coming in with suits and smart wear. How are you supposed to be hired if you come in looking like a mess?”
Chris babbled on and on about it.
He made it sound like he was the one taking part in the interviews, and not me.
However, I was still pretty touched that I had someone so concerned for me.
“Alright, got it. I’ll make sure to clean myself up nicely before heading over.”
I went back to sleep for a little while more after hanging up the phone. It was just past nine when changed my clothes and headed for school.
It was nine-thirty when I arrived at school.
Chris was waiting at the school gates. When he saw me moving slowly, he got so anxious his forehead drenched with sweat. “Couldn’t you have come earlier? I called you at eight, and you’re only arriving now? Also, what clothes are you wearing?”
“T-shirt and jeans. This is pretty nice, isn’t it?” I chuckled as I said.
“This is an interview, a very serious interview.” Chris was exasperated.
“I know that, but it just feels like a passing thing to me. By the way, where’s your girlfriend?”
“She’s queueing up on our behalf. There are a lot of people here for the interview. Almost all of our school’s creme de la creme are here. They’ve even canceled all classes today for this recruitment drive and pushed them to tomorrow.”
“Looks like our school is really giving this a lot of attention.”
“Of course they are. This is the Stamen Group we’re talking about. If the school is able to get a huge batch of graduates hired by Stamen Group, this school recruitment will be much easier to organize in the future,” said Chris.
“Alright, then let’s go.”
The recruitment drive was being held at Tranquility Building, the school’s largest venue.
By the time we arrived, it was crowded with people queuing right outside the building. It was quite a scene, and the number of people present was overwhelming.
“Oh my God, there’s just too many people.”
I was shocked by how crowded the place was.
“I told you that you should take this seriously, but you just had to ignore my advice. Regretting it now?”
“What’s there to regret? Just get your girlfriend out here. We aren’t gonna queue up any longer. How long is this even gonna take?”
“Not queueing up? Are you giving up?”
“I’m not giving up. All I need to do is inform them about us being here. If I can get you into Stamen Group, I can get myself and your girlfriend in too,” I said confidently.
“Are you sure? Even our head teacher’s nephew has to queue up. Do you have better connections than he does?”
“Of course I do. Trust me, I have great connections.”
“I get it. You must have accepted Lindy Lowry’s offer. You’re her sugar baby now, aren’t you?”
“Son of a b***h! Stop trying to dig up gossip about me. Hurry up and get your girlfriend here. It’s not worth suffering in this hot weather.”
“Alright.”
…
I took the opportunity of Chris leaving to give Vincent a call.
“Uncle Quinn, were you the one who arranged our school recruitment drive?”
Vincent chuckled in reply. “You guessed it, Young Master. We need to recruit anyway, so why not extend this benefit to your classmates?”
“Thank you, Uncle Quinn.”
“By the way, may I know the reason for your call, Young Master?”
“Well, I need you to hire me and Natasha York from the Foreign Language Faculty.” I cut straight to the chase.
“That’s no problem, but Young Master, I don’t think that’s necessary for you. If you want some work to do, you can join the head board immediately.”
“Uncle Quinn, I think it’s better for me to start from the bottom. I’m just a student now, and I have no working experience. I don’t even know my own company. If I begin from the bottom, it’ll be more convincing if I join the board in the future.”
“You do think long-term, Young Master. Since you’ve made your decision, I’ll send out the instructions. By the way, how are things between you and Layla Owens?”
“Oh, I’ve forgotten to update you about it. We’ve registered our marriage, but she’s pretty busy right now, so we don’t really see each other much. She’ll probably see me once she’s done with her work, and we’ll get a house together later.”
“Young Master, you did it.” Vincent sounded a little agitated.
“That Layla girl may come from an ordinary family, but she has a kind heart and is very beautiful. All the rich gentlemen in the world are fighting for her hand. I never thought you would be able to succeed. She barely made the cut to be paired with you.”
“Stop flattering me, Uncle Quinn. I was able to succeed because you did well with the pre-arrangement.”
“You don’t need to be humble about this, Young Master. Since you’ve succeeded in marrying her, you should speed things up and quickly fulfill Old Mr. Logan’s last will and testament.”
“Well, that might be a little difficult. We currently don’t have much opportunity to see each other.” I laughed bitterly in my heart when I heard Vincent’s words.
Layla and I were just in a contract marriage.
It was impossible to touch her, let alone have a child with her.
“There’s no need to worry about that, Young Master. We will utilize our resources and invest in a few of her films. She will definitely be by your side soon. You must grab this opportunity, Young Master.”
Would that actually work?
I got into a good mood when I heard his words. “Thanks, Uncle Quinn. Oh, my friends are here. I’ll hang up first.”
I quickly ended the call when I saw Chris and Natasha approaching me.
“Who were you calling, Freddie?” Chris chuckled and got closer to me.
“None of your business. Anyway, I’ve settled the issue about getting a job at Stamen.”
“f**k, did you really do that?” Chris and Natasha brightened up, wide smiles spreading across their faces.
“You’re pretty amazing, Freddie. Come on, I’m buying you a good meal.”
…
Stamen Group’s recruitment drive lasted from ten in the morning till four in the afternoon.
The name list of the hires would be announced on the notice board at five.
When five o’clock came, I brought along Chris and Natasha to the front of the Tranquility Building to check the results.
The front of the Tranquility Building was crowded with people there to check the results.
It was just like when our final exam results were announced.
Every time someone spotted their name on the list, they would immediately let out a shout!
As for the others, they would look at this person enviously.
It might have just been an internship position at Stamen Group…
However, the company had good benefits and was well-known. Getting recruited by the group was like gaining huge advancement in one’s career.
“Freddie, both you and Natasha were hired, weren’t you?” Chris asked worriedly.
“Why don’t you go in there to find out?” I replied to Chris.
“Aren’t you going in?”
“I’m not. You can help me check.”
Five minutes later.
Chris squeezed out from the crowd excitedly. “f**k, Freddie! Your name is on the list. You’re hired.”
With that, he showed me the picture on his phone.
I took a look at it. I was listed as number one, while Natasha was number two.
It was quite distinct.
“I told you there wouldn’t be a problem. Let’s go have some food,” I said calmly.
However, Chris was unsettled. “Wait a minute. Let me share this photo in the class group chat. They will die of envy.”
“Don’t…”
I wanted to stop him, but Chris was too fast. The photo was shared into the group chat.
Once everyone in the group found out I was the only one in class who was hired, there were plenty of sour grapes chiming in.
“What’s wrong with Stamen Group? Why would they hire someone like Freddie?”
“Yeah, even the outstanding Howard was not hired, so why would they pick someone like Freddie? I think this recruitment drive is unfair!”
“That’s right. And to think that Howard’s uncle is part of the school’s upper management. That said, I think Freddie must have gotten hired through other means.”
“That must be it. Didn’t he receive a lot of money because his old home was relocated? He must have bribed someone.”
“Bribe? I think he sold his a*s. I heard that the recruitment manager is gay. Freddie must have offered his a*s to the guy!”
“Shut up! What bullshit are you guys spouting?!”
Chris spoke up on my behalf when he saw the conversation getting out of hand.
However, I pulled him back. “Forget about it, Chris. Stop explaining on my behalf… This is just the way they are. I expected it.”
“I’m sorry, Freddie. I had no idea things would turn out this way,” Chris said apologetically.
“It’s alright. It’s been so many years, I’ve already gotten used to it. Not everyone will wish you well in this world. Let’s go eat.”
“Alright.”
We were about to head to the school dining hall for our meal after we were done chatting when an unfamiliar number called me.
I picked up the call and asked curiously, “Hello, who is this?”
“Is this Freddie Lang? This is the school’s head teacher. Please come to my office immediately.” The head teacher’s cold voice could be heard from the other end of the phone.
