Chapter 42

Head teacher? I was puzzled. Why did the head teacher want to see me for no reason? “May I ask what is the matter?” “There’s no need for questions. All you need to do is come over.” “Alright, I’ll be there after eating.” “Don’t you understand English? I’m telling you to come over right now.” I could not help but frown at his cold tone. However, he was the head teacher, after all, so I agreed to his demands. “Alright. I’ll head over now.” “Who was that?” Chris asked after I hung up when he noticed something was wrong. “The head teacher.” “Him? What does he want with you?” “I have no idea. He wants me to see him now. You guys go on and eat. There’s no need to get anything for me.” “Why don’t I accompany you there? I heard Charles Lincoln isn’t really a good person.” “It’s fine, you guys go on ahead. I can handle it.” I did not give Chris a chance to argue further as I turned toward the administrative building. … I arrived at the administrative building a few minutes later and knocked on the head teacher’s door. “Come in.” I pushed the door open and walked in. “Were you looking for me, Mr. Lincoln?” “Yes, I have something to talk to you about. Please have a seat.” Charles Lincoln gestured for me to sit down as he got up to shut the door tight. I knew something was up when I saw the sneaky way he was handling this. I asked, “What exactly do you need to see me for, Mr. Lincoln?” “Well, there’s been a mistake with the results announced by Stamen Group this afternoon, and I need to specially inform you about it.” “Mistake? What mistake was there?” My face turned grim. “You did not get hired. The one who was hired from your class was Howard Lincoln. Our staff was careless and made a mistake.” “Howard Lincoln?” I smirked at those words. I was the one who had personally called Vincent earlier in the day. How could this be a mistake? It was clear that Charles Lincoln wanted to steal this victory from me because he thought I was a pushover. However, he had made the wrong move. Trying to bully me, was he? He was not good enough for that. I sneered and said sarcastically, “I think, that this isn’t the staff’s mistake, Mr. Lincoln. You’re the one who wants Howard to take my place, aren’t you?” “Stop imagining things, Freddie. It was our fault that the school made a mistake, which is why I took the liberty to apply for a compensation of one thousand for you. You don’t lose anything this way.” With that, he pushed a thousand dollars into my face, smiling condescendingly. It was obvious that he had done a background check on me. He knew I was poor… I used to forgo my dignity to pick up mineral water bottles from the ground for the sake of saving money. However, he had made the wrong move today. I smiled and took the one thousand into my hand. “That’s right.” The smile on Charles' face got wider when he saw me take the money. However, he stopped smiling the next second. That was because I tore up the dollar bills and threw them in his face. “Trying to bribe me with a mere thousand dollars? Who do you think I am?” “What are you doing, Freddie? Are you trying to go against me?” Charles' face turned extremely upset. He clearly did not expect me to throw the money in this face. “Shouldn’t I be the one saying that? I should be asking you, ‘What are you doing, Mr. Lincoln?’” “Don’t play around with me when I’m trying to help you, Freddie. It took a lot to fight for that one thousand on your behalf. You shouldn’t tear the money up even if you didn’t want it!” “What’s wrong? Does it pain you? Was that your own money? Don’t think I’m not aware of your plans. This recruitment was organized by Stamen Group. When did you become in charge of it? Moreover, if there really was a mistake, Stamen Bank would have given me a call. If you’re that capable, get them to call me personally, and I’ll forfeit my place.” “You…!!!” Charles was furious. His eyes turned momentarily dark before he finally chose to admit, “Fine. That spot belongs to you, but you have to forfeit it today, whether you like it or not.” “Why? I was hired on my own merits,” I said with a snigger. “The sole reason that I’m your head teacher. I can easily ensure that you don’t graduate. You won’t be able to receive any financial aid or scholarships, either.” “Is that so? How scary for me.” I chuckled. I would have been afraid if this had happened before everything. After all, I had needed my scholarship and financial aid to survive back then, but I was a billionaire now. Why would I be afraid of a mere head teacher? “If you’re scared, be a good boy and forfeit your spot.” Charles looked like he thought he had finally gotten me. “I’m sorry. I might be scared, but I won’t forfeit my place. What can you do about it?” Charles said with a grim face, “Don’t you want to graduate, Freddie? You do know that with my current position, I can do what I said I would.” “Just go ahead and try. If you continue crossing the line with me, I’ll make sure your reputation is ruined.” I glared at him and turned to leave with a sneer on my face. The moment I left the room, Charles’ roar could be heard from inside. “I’ll f*****g make sure you pay for this, you son of a b***h!!!” … I went to the dining hall for some food after I left the administrative building. When I got to the stairs of the building, I saw Chris and Natasha waiting for me there. “What are you both doing here? Didn’t I tell you to go ahead and eat first?” “I’m just worried about you. What did the head teacher want with you?” Chris asked anxiously. “He wanted me to forfeit my place at Stamen Group and let Howard have it. He threatened me and said if I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t be able to graduate.” Chris was pretty angered by this. “What? He’s the school’s upper management. How can he do something so despicable?! Freddie, don’t give in to him. Getting a job with Stamen Group is no easy feat. Every student in school would fight each other over one position.” “I know. Charles Lincoln wouldn’t have done something like this if it wasn’t that way.” “What if he really makes sure you can’t graduate if you don’t give in? How about reporting him to the school’s upper management?” “There’s no need to. If he dares lay a finger on me, I have my ways to deal with him.” With my current status, not just a mere head teacher, but even the school’s dean would need to be respectful and not cross the line when it came to me. “As long as you have a way of dealing with it. Let’s go have our meal in the canteen.” … After I was done eating at the school canteen, I headed toward my rental home outside of school. Montana was already home when I returned. She was sitting in a daze at the dining table. I wanted to greet her. However, I remembered how angry she had been the night before… So, I awkwardly put my hand down and decided not to poke the bear. Right at that moment, she suddenly called out to me. “Freddie, I ordered takeaway. Come eat with me.” “I…” I wanted to tell her that I had just eaten, but when I saw the fierce look on her face, I decided to take a seat at the table. “Why are you suddenly buying me this meal? This isn’t a goodbye meal, is it?” I looked at the table, which was covered with seven or eight dishes. This was a scrumptious spread! My heart sank immediately. This girl was not really planning to kick me out, was she? However, Montana suddenly said, “I was wrong about you yesterday. I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad.” “Huh? So, this isn’t goodbye?” “When did I say anything about saying goodbye? That Macy Ziegler explained everything to me. Come to think of it, it was your fault for allowing her to enter my room. It created such a huge misunderstanding!” “I did call you last night about it, but you didn’t pick up.” “Are you saying this is my fault?” “It’s not. It’s my fault! My fault!” I chuckled. I was in a happy mood once again now that I knew Montana would not be leaving. It did not matter to me who was right or wrong. Despite having had dinner before I came home, I ate quite a lot with her. … Silence the entire night. I went to school as usual the next day. The second class of the morning was my favorite class, Physical Education. I started playing an intense game of basketball with a group of guys from my class. Halfway through the game, our class representative, Nadia, suddenly came looking for me. “Could you step out of the game for a moment, Freddie? I need to talk to you.” Everyone knew my relationship with Nadia, which was why they immediately began whispering among themselves. I walked over to her, puzzled. “What’s up? Is anything the matter?” “Let’s have a seat at the side.” She pointed to the far end of the basketball court. “Alright.” I walked with her to the far end of the court and sat down next to a pile of schoolbags. “What exactly is the matter?” I was absolutely baffled by her. We had nothing to say to each other. Had she ended up falling for me after what happened the last time?
