I found it hard to fall asleep, all thanks to Clementine Wind.
Since I could not fall asleep, I decided to stop trying. I fished out my phone and started surfing the internet for any posts with local villas on sale.
Before all else, I found it unbelievable that there were so many villas in this city by the coast—a city with ordinary economic growth. Some of them were high-end villas that could cost several million each. What a shocker!
After going through several selections, I soon had my eyes on a villa district.
The place was named called Scenic Villas and was located on the coast of Lovers’ Bay. It was named after the mountains that surrounded the villa district on three sides while giving the residents the sea view on one side—the people here could enjoy the lush green scenery of the mountains and appreciate the view of the horizons where the sky and sea met.
With such a magnificent view, it was already a rare local gem.
Moreover, some of the villas came with private pools, private beaches, and even a private helicopter pad.
I was already sold on the idea after reading through the description.
If I bought this, would that give me the chance to saunter along the soft sands of the beach with Layla? Would I be able to fool around in the pool with her?
Just thinking about it nearly gave me a nosebleed!
Yes, I would buy it! I would buy it for sure!
After making that decision, I put my phone down. It did not take me long before I fell asleep.
…
The next day, after eating a simple breakfast, I hailed a taxi and headed to Lovers’ Bay.
However, the moment I got into the car, I received a phone call from a number I had never seen before.
After a brief hesitance, I accepted the call.
“Hello. Who’s this?”
“You’re Freddie Lang, aren’t you?” A woman’s voice pierced into my ears from the other side of the phone.
“That’s right. I’m Freddie Lang. Who are you?”
“I’m Layla’s mother. Come to Pullman Hotel right now. I’ll be waiting for you in the cafe.”
Layla’s mother?
Why did she approach me?
I was confused. Moreover, from the way she spoke, it sounded like we were meeting each other in private.
This did not seem proper, right?
My mouth trembled in an attempt to ask her some questions but before I could say anything, she hung up.
Damn it. What in the world did she want? Judging by her tone, she did not mean well.
I hesitated and wondered if I should tell Layla about this.
Soon enough, I discarded this thought. I should not keep approaching Layla whenever something came up. This would just make me look useless. As the saying went, ‘Even the ugliest spouse will have to meet their in-laws eventually. Isn’t that right?’
With that in mind, I decided to meet my mother-in-law.
Hence, I urged the driver who was in front of me, “Mister, change in plans. Head to Pullman Hotel.”
…
Ten minutes later, I arrived at the café located on the first floor of Pullman Hotel.
A waiter led me to a private suite.
A middle-aged woman sat there in the suite, clad in a dress. With her seat next to the window, she was sipping her coffee while enjoying the scenery outside.
She took off her shades when she saw me.
With disdain in her eyes, she looked me up and down before sneering, “You’re Freddie?”
“That’s right. I’m Freddie. What should I call you, ma’am? Wait, I should be calling you mother now, right?” I said with a laugh, trying my hardest to make myself appear friendly.
However, my mother-in-law’s face twisted horribly when she heard me call her that. “Mother? Don’t bother. You don’t have the right to call me that.”
“Uh…”
“I wasn’t informed of your marriage with Layla, and neither would I give this union my blessing. Therefore, your marriage is nulled,” the woman said coldly.
“Nulled?” I laughed when I heard that. “Layla and I’s marriage are officially registered.”
My mother-in-law shot me a glare. Without saying anything else, she slammed a bank card onto the table loudly. “That’s enough. I’m not here to listen to your crap. Here, take this half a million and divorce Layla tomorrow!”
I was honestly shocked by the number—what a small amount!
My mother-in-law could not even come up to Roman’s standards.
At the very least, Roman would offer me five million every time he opened his mouth.
My mother-in-law noticed that my mouth was agape as I stared at the card blankly, and assumed that I was stunned speechless. She sneered, “This must be the first time you’ve seen such a huge amount of money from where you’re from, right? Hurry up and take it. This is enough to stop you from worrying about food and clothes for the rest of your life.”
“Huh.”
I scoffed. Without even glancing at the bank card, I said, “Ma’am, do you honestly think that your daughter’s marriage and happiness are only worth half a million?”
“What are you saying? Are you saying that this isn’t enough for you?” My mother-in-law’s face twisted into a horrible expression. “I know what Layla’s thinking. She only wants to use you as a shield. This half a million is more than enough for you!”
“Hehe, since you’ve been straightforward with me, let me be straightforward too. Layla Owens is now my lawfully wedded wife. I’d never leave her, and neither would I divorce her. Also, I want to build a family and raise children with her.”
“You want my Layla to give you children? What makes you think you’re worthy of that?!”
Hearing that I wanted Layla to bear my children, my mother-in-law’s face grew more twisted by the second.
“That’s right. I want her to bear my children!” I nodded with an austere expression.
“Hmph, I know what you mean now. You just want more money, don’t you? Fine, I’ll add another half a million. You’ll get a million. This should cover all of your expenses for a lifetime now, shouldn’t it?”
“Huh. Since you’re acting like this, there’s nothing else for me to say.” I got up to leave.
Although she already had money and status, she remained narrow-minded. This was atypical of the nouveau-riche.
Otherwise, she would not have gotten deceived and made Layla Owens sign that film contract full of exploits. That was what placed Layla between a rock and a hard place as her skull nearly cracked open from anxiety.
“Stop! You can’t walk away!”
Seeing that I was about to leave, my mother-in-law rushed to my front and blocked my path. “Name your price. How much money will it take for you to leave my daughter?”
“I told you. I won’t leave her no matter how much money you offer me. I sincerely hope to treat her well and spend the rest of my life with her,” I explained in utmost seriousness.
“Hmph, I’m afraid you’re not good enough for my daughter.”
“Then, tell me. How can I prove that I’m good enough for your daughter?” I let out a cold snort.
“Naturally, you’d have to be super rich or royalty. Look at you! You reek of poverty! Do you honestly think you can bring my daughter happiness? I won’t even get started on cars and houses because you won’t be able to earn enough money to buy her a piece of clothing! If you truly care for her, you should give her your blessings instead of clinging onto her.”
“Is that so? As long as I can fulfill her materialistic needs, you’ll think that I’m worthy of her?”
“Of course. Materialism is the basis of everything.”
“Then, tell me. What do I have to achieve for you to stop obstructing us?” I said with a hint of a smile.
“Um…”
My mother-in-law was a little surprised. Obviously, she did not expect me to make such a comeback.
After hesitating for a while, she answered, “How about this? The reason I’m here is to buy Layla a house. She’ll have to live here for a long while in the future. Coincidentally, I’ve been looking at a villa here. If you can afford it, I won’t stop you two anymore. If you can’t, be a good boy and leave her. Do we have a deal?”
“Sure.”
I agreed to her request in a heartbeat.
My mother-in-law was shocked. “You agreed to that?”
“Yep. Coincidentally, I’ve been thinking of buying her a house and making it our future home.”
“You can afford it?” She was still shocked.
“Hehe, my ability to afford a house is my business. Ma’am, we’re holding true to everything you said just now, right?” I gave my mother-in-law a cheeky smile.
“Of course, but I’m choosing the house. A tattered small house or a tiny apartment won’t be able to satisfy me!”
“That’s not a problem!” I promised curtly.
“Great. Now, follow me. I have my heart set on one of the villas already!”
“Sure.”
…
Half an hour later, we came to the sales center at Lovers’ Bay, where Scenic Villas were sold.
I stood outside the entrance to the sales center, shocked.
I never expected my mother-in-law to have made the same choice as I did.
However, it did not take me long to realize that there were not many high-end villa districts in the area. This villa district was the only one that was worthy of Layla Owens' status.
It was clear that it was not my mother-in-law’s first time here. A sales lady gave her a warm welcome the moment she appeared.
“Ms. Melson, you’re here! Which villa do you wish to visit today? Our manager is here today too. If you find one you like, I can help you apply for discounts.”
“There’s no need for that. I’ll take the most expensive one!”
“Huh? You’re not going to take a look?” The sales lady was stunned momentarily before her eyebrows arched with joy. “That’s great. I’ll get you the contract immediately. Would you be paying via check or card? I’ll ask Finance to get everything ready.”
“Don’t ask me. Ask him.” My mother-in-law pointed at me after saying that.
