“This is my home, Freddie,” Yvette said with embarrassment. “Please bear with it because my home is a little messy. Also, remember to say that you’re my boyfriend. Don’t let them see through you.”
“Don’t worry, I know what to do.” I nodded.
Yvette shouted at the house after reminding me what to do, “Mom, dad, Freddie is here.”
The door opened very quickly.
The elderly seniors with a head full of white hair walked out unsteadily from the house.
Yvette’s father knelt on the ground agitatedly when he saw me. “Thank you, thank you, our benefactor. Please accept three kowtows from me.”
He immediately wanted to kowtow to me after saying this.
I was shocked by this and quickly went forward to help him up. “Uncle, what are you doing? Get up, please get up. You’re making me feel bad this way.”
“Freddie, Yvette told me everything. If it wasn’t for you, my old bones wouldn’t have made it till today.” Yvette’s father was so agitated, there were tears in his eyes.
“Uncle, I’m Yvette’s boyfriend. It’s only right for me to do whatever I did. Please get up. If you insist on kowtowing to me, I would need to kowtow in return to you.”
“No, no, you shouldn’t do that.”
Yvette’s father kept shaking his head when he heard this. He turned to Yvette’s mother to say, “Hurry up and get some water for Freddie.”
“That’s right, that’s right. Freddie, come in quick and have a drink.”
I looked around the house when I followed Yvette in.
Yvette’s home was really rundown.
It was a sort of tent that was put up using wood and plastic. It could not prevent the cold and would most slightly be leaking if it rained. It could not be more rundown than its current state.
There was not much furniture and electronics in the house. It could be because they needed to build a fire to cook, the house was blackened at every corner.
I felt bad when I saw their living situation.
With living conditions like this, Yvette still chose to save me all those years ago.
She must have used half a year’s expenses back then to pay for my medical bill.
I secretly decided to repay them properly at this thought.
Right then, Yvette’s mother passed me a glass of water. “There’s nothing much in this house to treat you, Freddie. Please make do with this glass of water.”
“It’s fine. Water is pretty good.” I took over the glass in a friendly manner.
I noticed that only the glass I was using was new. The others either had chips at the top or were glasses that had been used for many years, which were quite dirty.
“When do we eat, Mom? We’re all hungry,” Yvette suddenly voiced out.
“Well, we need to wait a little longer. When your older sister found out you’re bringing your boyfriend home, she said wanted to bring your brother-in-law home as well for a meal. She wants us to wait until eight.”
“Eight?” Yvette frowned. “Wouldn’t that be another two hours? She’s too much, isn’t she? Freddie is the guest today. How could she do something like this?!”
“I…” Yvette’s mother looked at me apologetically. “Freddie, I’m so sorry to make you wait so long.”
“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I waved my hand to gesture it was okay. “I don’t have anything to do later anyway. It would be nice for the whole family to have a meal together. I like company. Besides, there’s an old saying that says it’s worth it to wait for a good meal.”
I was sincere with my words.
As I was an orphan, I had always hoped that one day, I could have a happy, rowdy meal with my entire family.
Today, Yvette had helped make this small wish come true.
However, this meal was indeed a difficult wait for me.
It was until eight-thirty that Yvette’s sister arrived late with her husband.
From what Yvette had told me, her sister’s name was Susan. Susan’s husband was called Billy Cash and he worked as a foreman.
Susan was very beautiful, just like Yvette. They were both considered great beauties.
However, Yvette had an innocent charm about her while Susan was sexy, much like how Macy was. The man next to her had a huge tummy and was wearing a big, gold watch on his wrist, trying to show off how rich he was.
Susan smiled and explained when she entered the house.
“Yvette, Freddie, I’m so sorry for making you wait. There was too much work at the office and I couldn’t leave because they were all big projects worth millions.”
She may sound like she was apologizing, but it felt more like she was showing off.
Yvette could not take it and retorted, “Yeah, you’re real busy. So busy that you made us wait more than two hours for dinner.”
“What do you mean, Yvette? I took time off to come home and have dinner with you on your account. How could you think of me this way?”
Susan looked me up and down after saying this and smiled, “Is this your boyfriend, Yvette? He does look quite…down to earth.”
Yvette looked furious when she heard this.
Even I looked grim when I heard what she said.
Yvette had given me a warning beforehand about how her sister was quite a snobbish person and difficult to get along with.
However, by the looks of it, she was a woman with a vile tongue.
Yvette’s mother, Rosa Anderson, realized the tension and quickly tried to smooth things over. “I think we’re all hungry now. Let’s sit and have dinner.”
“Alright.”
We all go to our seats as Yvette’s mother defused the tension.
However, Susan spoke up once more. She stood up from her chair and said with disgust. “Mom, how many times have I mentioned this to you? Get rid of these broken chairs and table. They’re all so sticky and it’s disgusting.”
“Susan, these chairs had only been used for a few years. It would be a pity to throw them away,” said Rosa.
“Just tell me if you don’t have the money. My husband is pretty rich,” said Susan.
“That’s enough. Let’s eat,” Yvette’s father, David Sullivan, slammed the table and said.
Everyone sat down quietly after he spoke.
However, Susan was clearly not someone who could keep her mouth shut for long. After picking on the table and chairs, she began to pick on the food. “Mom, what sort of dishes did you make? Isn’t the chicken too dry? Just look at the fish, the scales weren’t cleaned properly. Also, what’s the deal with this black stuff? Is that fit for human consumption?”
When Susan said this, everyone but her husband, Billy, looked quite upset.
However, Susan pretended not to see this and continued her one-woman conversation, “Mom, this entire table of dishes tastes terrible. They are only fit for pigs.”
“What do you mean by this, Susan?” Yvette could not take it any longer. She slammed the table and stood up. “Susan, you can keep your mouth shut if you don’t want to eat any of this. Mom labored the entire afternoon preparing this table of dishes. If they aren’t fit for human consumption, what did you eat while growing up? I know you’re rich now, but you shouldn’t be ungrateful even if you have money.”
“Hoho, when have I been ungrateful? I’m just being honest. These dishes do taste terrible… Billy, tell them what we had this afternoon.”
Susan said sweetly to Billy.
“We only had some normal everyday dishes this afternoon. There were lobsters, abalone, and wagyu beef. One meal cost about eighteen thousand,” Billy answered nonchalantly.
“You hear that, Yvette? One meal cost us more than ten thousand. I think it’s best we don’t continue eating this table of dishes. How about if I buy everyone a meal at a five-star hotel?”
“Go ahead if you want to. I’m not going.”
Yvette sat down and continued to have her meal.
Yvette’s parents and I silently began to eat as well.
When Susan saw her suggestion being rejected, she changed the conversation topic. “Yvette, are you still working at the property sales center?”
Yvette darted a look at her, which was considered a silent acknowledgment.
“Listen to me and stop working there. Work with me and your brother-in-law from now on. We can get you any job that’s better than property sales. There’s no future in that.”
“Says who that I have no future?” Yvette replied angrily.
“There’s really no future to it. If there’s a better future for you, would you have found a boyfriend like…” Susan looked at me condescendingly.
I was not planning on getting in between the conversation of both sisters.
However, this Susan was looking down on me.
I could not stand by any longer, so I placed my utensils down and chuckled. “Tell me, what do you think I am?”
