Miles had wheeled to face the horse directly and made a curious gesture with his right hand, lifting it quickly from his waist with the palm out and fingers splayed. Sunday reacted immediately to the clawing gesture, abruptly changing direction and dancing sideways away from the stranger. Phillips suddenly had his hands full of uncooperative horse. Miles walked a few quick paces into the brush, grabbing his canteen off the ground en route.
