CHAPTER 3✍ BRITTANY'S POV: I swallowed hard, feeling a wave of nervousness wash over me as I clutched my bag tightly. "Hello," a soft voice greeted me. I looked up and saw a bright, cheerful woman, who I assumed was the teacher. Quickly, I dropped my gaze, my shyness getting the better of me. "Good morning, ma'am," I murmured. "Good morning, dear. What's your name?" she asked gently. I know you’re probably wondering why the principal wasn’t the one introducing me. Well, as you might recall, I got lost earlier. Instead of heading to the principal's office for formalities, I followed Dwayne straight to class. Honestly, I didn’t see the point in going to the office when my dad had already sorted out all the paperwork. "I'm Brittany Smith, ma’am," I replied, still avoiding eye contact. "I hope you like it here, dear," she said warmly. "Thank you, ma’am," I whispered. "Have you seen the principal?" she asked. Ugh! Could she stop asking me so many questions in front of the entire class? This is torture! "Yes, ma’am. I saw her over the weekend," I answered politely. "That's good, dear," she said with a smile. "Uh, ma’am... she’s still standing," Dwayne called out from her seat. Thank you, Dwayne! "Oh! I’m so sorry, dear. I completely forgot," the teacher said, her tone apologetic. "You can take that seat over there," she added, pointing to a desk at the back-left corner of the classroom. "Thank you, ma’am," I said before walking over. "I’m Mrs. Bailey, your history teacher," she added. I didn’t reply, simply nodding slightly as I made my way to the desk. I paused for a moment, staring at my new seat before settling into it gently. Geez! Why is everyone staring at me? Haven't they seen a new girl before? Ugh, I swear, if I could, I’d stab all those staring eyes right now. I couldn’t handle the weight of their gazes, so I dropped my head, focusing on the desk. My finger traced invisible shapes on the surface as I tried to ignore Mrs. Bailey's lecture entirely. Recess… A few minutes later, Mrs. Bailey left the room, and I straightened up, examining my desk locker. "Brittany, right?" a voice called. "Yes," I said, looking up. It was Dawn - Dwayne’s twin sister. "Whatever. So, why are you here in Dashville? Why did you transfer schools?" she asked bluntly. What’s her deal? I’m not ready for this interrogation, I thought to myself. "I... I can't answer that," I said cautiously. "And why not?" she pressed. "Leave her alone, Dawn!" Dwayne’s voice cut through from behind her. "Don’t defend her, Dwayne," another voice chimed in, it was Dawn. "Why do you have to bug her on her first day?" Dwayne snapped. What’s going on? I can’t let two sisters start a fight on my first day. "Please, stop, all of you," I said quickly. "And who are you to tell me what to do?" Dawn shot back, her tone icy. "I’m sorry," I mumbled. "Don’t apologize, Brittany. She’s just being petty," Dwayne said. "Watch it, sis!" Dawn yelled, her voice rising. "What’s going on here?" A cool baritone voice silenced the chaos as a boy entered the classroom. The tension in the air evaporated instantly, and everyone quieted down. Whoever he was, he clearly had a way of commanding attention.
