Chapter 4: Quiet Changes

1063 Words
After just one week of marriage, Chit Tho Tho had started to get used to sharing a home with Kan Bar. Since both of them worked full-time, they had not hired any house help. Surprisingly, Tho Tho had gotten quite comfortable preparing Kan Bar’s clothes every day. His wardrobe mainly consisted of whites, blacks, soft grays, and light blues, making the task easier for her. Before the wedding, Tho Tho had been worried about waking up early to make breakfast—a habit she wasn’t used to. She had often imagined how angry her boss might be if he didn’t get his morning meal. But to her surprise, each morning when she was still half asleep, she found her boss—her husband—already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast for both of them. It made her feel a little guilty. Their home was lovely. Behind the house, an extension had been built; out front, her mother-in-law had planted flowers that Tho Tho loved. There was even a small but beautiful pool. This weekend, she planned to hire someone to help clean up the yard. --- Kan Bar’s Perspective Kan Bar’s life had leveled up since the week of his wedding. From day one, Tho Tho had taken over organizing his clothes. From shoes to watches, she made sure everything matched perfectly. She was a young, modern woman—fashionable and elegant. He had never imagined himself marrying someone so much younger, but waking up to her face every morning brought him a sense of calm and joy. She had even started making breakfast sometimes, although it was usually him. Apparently, according to his mother, Tho Tho had grown fond of simple breakfasts—grilled bread and freshly blended butter-fruit juice. Yet… despite all of this, Kan Bar couldn’t help but think of his first love whenever he looked at Tho Tho. He knew it was unfair to her, and he hated that part of himself. He tried to push the thought away every time it crept in. He had already made a decision—to be the best husband he could possibly be to Tho Tho. --- At the Office – Kan Bar’s Office Kan Bar was in a meeting with the department store manager. Ko Myo Kyaw stood nearby as they discussed business. Manager: "Yes, Boss. I’ll give it my all. I’ll connect with some jewelry designers and report back soon." Kan Bar: "Sounds good. Let’s all give our best effort together." After the manager left, Ko Myo Kyaw approached. Myo Kyaw: "Boss, Luxe Hotel and D Bank's chairmen want to meet up for a round of golf this weekend. Their secretaries contacted us. I think it’s also related to next year’s project." Kan Bar: "Alright. Confirm the time and place for tomorrow and let me know." Myo Kyaw: "Will do, Boss. I also need to check in with the marketing team. May I step out?" Kan Bar nodded and turned back to his paperwork. --- In the Secretary Office Myo Kyaw: "Alright team, let’s head to Marketing. We’ll discuss the current market status in Ngapali related to our hotel." Ma Inn Kyin (jokingly): "Let’s go talk to the marketing manager—and maybe let our hearts float his way." Inn Kyin was known for her jokes. In the Marketing Room, the team gathered to discuss current strategies. Tho Tho, still new, was there as an observer, gradually picking up on the corporate environment. After the meeting… Marketing Manager: "Tho Tho, I heard through the grapevine that you’re married now. Some of our male staff are heartbroken. Can you clarify this personally?" Tho Tho smiled and raised her hand, showing her wedding ring. Tho Tho: "Yes, Ko. I got married." Just then, Ma Inn Kyin leaned in, grabbing her hand. Inn Kyin: "Nice quality ring! Very pretty!" The group laughed and admired the ring. At that moment, Boss Kan Bar appeared at the door. He had been on his way down to meet a visiting friend when he overheard the chatter and paused briefly to listen. Kan Bar (smiling): "Everyone seems cheerful today. Please, carry on and get back to work. Don’t mind me." Everyone smiled and returned to their seats. Kan Bar appreciated how harmonious his team had become. The success of the company felt even more satisfying with such a pleasant work culture. Kan Bar (casually): "So, what were you all laughing about just now?" A bold young man spoke up from the group. Staffer (teasing): "We were just talking about Secretary Tho Tho’s surprise wedding. Honestly, Boss, I didn’t believe it at first. I was just starting to get to know her. There was so much competition around her! She was my dream girl… my little star, my flower—" Everyone laughed, including Tho Tho, who blushed deeply and sneakily glanced at Kan Bar. --- The Arrival of Old Friends Just then, a few of Kan Bar’s childhood friends—Ko Agga, Ko Kaung Myat, and a man no one recognized—entered the office. Agga saw Tho Tho immediately. Agga: "Hey! My little sister Tho Tho! How are you? Is my guy taking good care of you?" Tho Tho (smiling): "Yes, Ko. He’s treating me well." Kaung Myat (winking): "Locked in with the boss, huh?" Kan Bar: "Alright, alright. Didn’t you come to see me? Head over to my office." Then, turning to his staff: Kan Bar: "You all can return to your tasks now." As they left, someone in the room quietly stared at Tho Tho, unnoticed by everyone else... --- Back in the Secretary Office Ma Soe Myat: "Tho Tho, do you already know Boss’s friends?" Tho Tho: "Yes, they’re my husband’s childhood friends." Ma Soe Myat: "Ohhh… so that means your husband and our boss are close friends too?" Myo Kyaw: "Okay, enough gossip. Let’s get back to work." Everyone laughed and returned to their desks. Tho Tho, feeling a little more relaxed, smiled warmly at Ko Myo Kyaw. --- Boss’s Office In Kan Bar’s office, his friends lounged comfortably on the sofa. These were childhood friends—except for one person who was missing. Thuta: "Kan Bar! Congratulations, my man! I really wanted to fly back in time for the wedding, but the weather grounded me." Kan Bar: "No worries. You made it now. Let’s celebrate together with a proper meal tomorrow..."
