LINE'S CROSSED

--- 💎 Beneath the Billionaire’s Pride Chapter 3: Lines Crossed Rain whispered against the windows of Blake Tower, turning the city below into a blur of silver and shadow. The kind of night that quieted everything—except guilt. Lena’s phone buzzed again. Noah: Don’t worry. Everything’s fine. She didn’t believe it. Not anymore. At her desk, she stared at the message until the words blurred. Her hands were cold, her chest tight. She had promised her brother she’d protect him from their father’s debts, from the kind of people who offered help with a smile and collected with blood. But the walls were closing in. The elevator chimed behind her. Ethan stepped out, coat draped over his arm, eyes sharper than the storm outside. “You’re still here.” She straightened. “I was just finishing reports for tomorrow.” He studied her face—too pale, too tired. “You’re distracted.” “Just a long day.” Ethan didn’t buy it. He rarely missed anything. “Something’s wrong.” She forced a smile. “I appreciate your concern, Mr. Blake, but my personal life doesn’t interfere with my work.” He leaned against her desk, voice low. “You think I’m concerned?” Lena met his gaze, unflinching. “You wouldn’t be here at ten p.m. if you weren’t.” For a heartbeat, the air between them shifted. Her calm defiance stirred something in him again—something he hadn’t felt since before he built his empire out of pride and loss. Ethan exhaled, stepping back. “I don’t tolerate secrets in my company, Miss Hart. Whatever’s distracting you—handle it.” She nodded quietly. “I will.” But she wasn’t sure how. --- Across town, Noah stood outside the gates of the Maroni estate, clutching an envelope filled with whatever cash he’d scraped together. The guards let him in without a word. Inside, Marco Maroni sat behind a polished mahogany desk, eyes gleaming with casual cruelty. “You’re late,” Marco said. “I—I have part of it,” Noah stammered, sliding the envelope forward. “The rest—” Marco opened it, counting the bills with a smirk. “You think this covers the interest? You think you can play games with me, kid?” “I’m trying—” Marco’s hand slammed down on the desk. “Trying doesn’t keep people alive.” Noah flinched. “Please, I’ll get you the rest. Just give me time.” Marco leaned back, studying him. “You’ve got a sister, don’t you? Works for that billionaire.” Noah’s blood went cold. “Leave her out of this.” Marco smiled thinly. “Relax, kid. It’s just business. But maybe your sister can help settle what you owe. A little favor from her boss, perhaps.” Noah backed away, shaking his head. “Don’t touch her.” Marco’s smile never reached his eyes. “You’d better make sure I don’t have to.” --- The next morning, Lena walked into the office wearing her usual composed expression—but Ethan noticed the faint tremor in her hand as she placed his coffee down. “Miss Hart,” he said, voice measured, “sit down.” She hesitated, then obeyed. “I looked into your background,” he continued. “Flawless record. But your brother… he’s come up in a few places he shouldn’t.” Her blood ran cold. “You investigated me?” “I protect what’s mine,” he said simply. Her eyes burned. “I’m not one of your assets, Mr. Blake.” “No,” he said, leaning forward. “You’re something I can’t categorize. That’s what makes this dangerous.” Silence. The kind that hums between two people on the edge of something they can’t take back. “I’ll take care of it,” she whispered finally. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “You’d better. Because if this touches my company—” “Then what?” she snapped, her voice breaking through her composure. “You’ll fire me? Fine. But don’t you dare talk to me about control when you don’t even see how much you’ve already lost.” For a moment, his expression cracked—hurt, anger, something else. Before he could reply, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen—and her face drained of color. It was Noah’s number. But when she answered, the voice on the other end wasn’t his. “Miss Hart,” a smooth male voice said. “If you want to see your brother alive, you’ll listen carefully.” --- Lena froze. Ethan’s gaze sharpened instantly. “What is it?” he demanded. Her voice trembled. “They have Noah.” --- To be continued… Next Chapter: “The Debt” — where Ethan and Lena are forced into a dangerous alliance that blurs the line between business, loyalty, and love. ---
