Nan struggled to her feet, her legs straining with the dragging weight behind her, and started to make her way through the tables, to each master or mistress who had rejected her already. “Please, sir, allow me—” “Get away, I’m eating!” “Ma’am, may I—” “f**k off, you little cunt!” It was like she had leprosy. Did Thomas set this up, the rejections from everyone? No, of course not. It was Nan’s attitude that did this. The cold way she usually treated everyone. No one wanted to deal with her. It was coming back to haunt her, and it was going to make both of us go hungry. Nan kept trying though.
