Time stood still as his words echoed through her head, ricocheting off the walls of her mind as it got repeated over and over again in her head. “How? It wasn’t supposed to be here for at least a couple days!” Kairos yelled as he pulled his hand through his blonde locks, his muscles all tensed as he feared for her people. This changed everything. “I have no idea,” Drakos answered calmly as they all walked to the ships, but they all knew that underneath his calm exterior was a raging storm, “but we have already evacuated around six hundred people and the ships are coming back. We might be able to save another five hundred. However, after that I suggest not to come back.” If they did, it would risk their people’s death. “All right,” Kairos sighed out as he saw Lyon walking out of the ship that was ready for takeoff. “Caelyn you are going to board the ship that will bring you to the mother ship.” Turning around to look at her, he hoped she was more compliant than before, but one look at her face and he knew he had made the wrong decision. “What!” she yelled, coming out of her shock as she couldn’t believe he was still talking about this, “no, I am not leaving without you!” Drakos shook his head and knew that she wouldn’t go without at least one of them. “Kairos you go with her. I’ll stay here to handle everything and will leave when the ship has come back.” Like this, she still had Kairos to help her through the pain if anything went wrong. It would be too painful for her to lose them both, it would kill her. “No, I’m not leaving!” She tried to rip her arm out of Kairos’ grip with no success as she looked to Drakos whose eyes held pain, matching her own eyes which were filled with unshed tears. “Drakos, please,” she begged as her voice cracked, “I don’t want to leave without you.” “I’m sorry, Caelyn, but you have to leave. I will come with the next ship, it will be completely safe,” he lied as he looked away from her violet eyes, not able to stand the tears that were spilling from them and felt his own heart break. “No,” she choked out, still trying to get out of Kairos’ iron grip. “Drakos...” His voice almost a whisper as he knew his brother was lying. There will be a tremendous risk if he stayed down here, one they were both willing to take. The only problem was that Kairos thought he would be the one taking it and not his brother. She was closer to Drakos than him and losing him will be hard on her as he had marked her. “Kairos, it’s okay.” Looking his brother sternly in the eye, he let him know that he was willing to take this bet with a brief nod. Kairos’ eyes softened as he felt a pressure on his chest and nodded his head back in understanding. There was no other choice, and they needed to get her to safety. “Caelyn, we have to go now,” he whispered close to her ear, his voice breaking as he fought back the tears and pulled her with him. “N-No!” Crying out she fought against Kairos who was dragging her with him, but he was too strong and it didn’t take long until she was in the ship. She kicked and screamed at Kairos, hitting him on the chest as she couldn’t believe he was forcing her to leave him behind. “Caelyn, calm down,” Kairos spoke as he gripped her shoulders in his hands, his voice shattering like glass as the first tears spilled. She stilled at the sight of seeing him cry and let her head drop on his chest as a sob escaped her mouth. “I-I can’t l-lose him, Kairos.” “I know,” he mumbled as he felt the vibrations of the ship rocking through his body, signaling him that they were about to leave the planet. Drakos saw the ship take off and knew what he had to do, making sure that as many people will be saved. “Is she safe?” Rhael’s voice echoed through the hangar as he strode towards him. “Yes, did Mavis tell you how long it takes before the next couple of ships arrive.” Just as his voice, his face betrayed nothing. All that mattered right now were her people. “They are almost here,” Rhael answered as they both walked to the control room. “Good,” he replied as they walked back to the control room, “I want as many people as possible on them as this will be the last one.” “When will our ride come?” Rhael asked, not all too keen on spending another minute on this planet that could blow up at any moment. “Depends on how fast the ship comes back, an hour maybe.” He hoped it would be here within the hour as he wanted to get off this planet as fast as possible and be reunited with his mela. “Let’s hope it stays away until then.” Agreeing with Rhael’s words, he walked up to the screen that showed Mavis who was busy with ordering people around. “Mavis, what is the status on the leech?” Drakos asked, gaining her attention with his robust voice. “It’s very close and moving faster than we anticipated.” He knew what this meant. They would never get off this planet alive. “Drakos...” “I know, Mavis,” he started as he knew what she meant to say. “I need you to do something for me, okay. Take care of her, be her friend.” “Of course,” she whispered as her voice cracked, a stray tear rolling down her cheek. “I have to go now.” Cutting off the call, he turned around and looked around the room. Right now they could only hope that it stayed away long enough to save the next five hundred people and themselves. ... “Caelyn.” She ignored his call and kept staring out of the window to her home planet, seeing it slowly getting smaller and smaller as they moved away from it as the hole in her heart got bigger and bigger. “Caelyn,” he spoke again, louder than the last time. “They are not going to make it, are they?” she asked, her voice nothing more than a whisper as she saw the thing drawing closer to the planet. It was only a matter of time until it collided with the planet, minutes. “I’m sorry. I wanted to take his place, but...” he whispered, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You think that makes it any better,” she spoke bitterly, cutting him off mid-sentence, “I love you both.” “I know you do, but you preferred him more than me.” She raised her eyebrows as she opened her mouth to say something, not believing he just said that. “And that’s all right with me,” he added, before she felt guilty for leaving him out. “That’s not true, Kairos,” she breathed out. “Yes, I hung out with him more as he was easier the talk too, but you are just as important to me. You were only the more serious one.” At her words, he felt a little relieved and kissed her head as he hugged her to his chest. Not long after their conversation, the beast collided with the planet at full force and they saw the planet turning red, cracks showing on the surface, matching the ones in their hearts as they saw them spread over the rest of the planet before it exploded in pieces that got flung away. One of the reasons why they moved so far away from the ships. A sob tore through her body, its force testing that one of the beast and she felt her knees give out as she felt a sharp stab in her neck, exactly where Drakos’ mark was. Kairos caught her with ease and sat with her on the ground, cradling her in his arms as she cried loudly over the loss of his brother and her people. “It’s going to be okay,” he whispered as he could imagine the pain she was in now. He may have never experienced the loss of a mela himself, but from stories he had heard, he knew she was in a lot of pain right now. “It hurts,” she croaked out. Her whole body felt on fire and the mark on her neck burned with an intensity that was driving her crazy as she scratched it with her nails, wanting it to disappear. She screamed out as another wave of pain washed over her, a scream that pierced right through Kairos’ heart. Letting go of her, he walked to one of the cabinets to get out a sedative to use on her as he couldn’t stand her to see in so much pain. “I’m going to give you something that will help you relax,” he spoke right next to her ear as he pushed the needle inside her arm. The liquid flowed through her body, relaxing her muscles as her mind got taken over by a fog, disintegrating the pain she felt into nothingness. But she kept fighting against it, trying to keep her eyes open, but was unable to do so and before she knew she felt herself drift into oblivion. Watching her sleeping form in his arms, he leaned his forehead against hers for a moment as a lone tear escaped his eye. His brother died, and he knew the next couple of days will be hard, not just for her and him, but for his people too. With her in his arms, he stood up from the ground and made his way towards his room or better said, their room. As he walked through the plain industrial corridors, he passed by many people who had glum looks on their face. Their eyes brimmed with tears as they mourned the second prince’s death and after a couple short minutes, he arrived at their room where he saw Mavis standing in front of it. Upon seeing him, her eyes glistened with worry as she looked at the young queen in his arms. “I had to sedate her,” he told her as he walked into the room with Mavis right behind her. “Is it that bad?” Just like him, she had no idea how it felt to lose a mela. Everyone knew it was painful, but no one knew how much exactly. “Apparently,” he answered her as he placed her on the bed and tucked her in. “Can you get Azeil to stay with her? I need to talk with the people about our situation and the newcomers.” “Are you sure you want Azeil? He is quite the womanizer. You know that, right?” He and Drakos were best buds and even shared their woman from time to time, all the more the reason why Kairos wanted him. Azeil was known to be a flirt, and he hoped his carefree and kind nature would help her get through it as he won’t be able to spend much time with her due to recent events. “Yes, she needs someone like him right now and I can’t be that person for her at the moment,” speaking the truth. He was serious and even though they had excellent communication, he would not be able to help her through it. “Don’t downgrade yourself, Kairos. You are her mela. She needs you and I swear to the goddess, if you push her away I will drag you by the ear and lock you up here with her,” she sternly said as she narrowed her eyes to him and showed her determination. “I won’t.” Keeping her gaze locked with his, she slowly nodded her head when she was sure he meant it and strode out of the room to get Azeil. Kairos kept watching his little flower sleeping in his bed as he leaned against the wall with crossed arms. He had no idea how long she will be out. It could be hours or maybe even days, depending on how much healing her mind needed. Lost in his thoughts as he kept staring at her, he could hear from his right a knock and soon after the door opened, revealing Azeil who walked in leisurely with his hands in his pockets. “Mavis told me you needed me,” he spoke in his deep and breezy voice. “I need you to stay here and keep an eye on her.” Kairos didn’t give him a chance to reply as he immediately walked out of his room to the control room where he could talk to his people. “Is everything set up?” he asked as he walked into the room to see his people busy everywhere. “Yes, your highness. You can go live at any moment,” an angelic voice spoke that belonged to the twin sister of Mavis. “Great.” Standing before the screen, he waited for the red light on the camera to shine to start his speech. “Today something uneventful has happened to the planet Laomia,” he started his story, “many people have died, including my brother and the first in command. However, with the time we were given we were able to save a thousand people and I hope everyone will do everything in their power to help them to settle in. If you have any questions, you can ask them to the commander on your ship, who will direct them to me and I will answer them as fast as possible. As for now, I ask for a couple minutes of silence to mourn the deaths of the lives that we lost today.” During the two minutes everyone was silent as they silently wept for their lost prince and for the people who died as they knew how the Laomians must feel, their own wounds tearing open in the process. And as they wept, hugging their families close, they promised to help the newcomers settle and get them through the loss of losing their homes, just like how the two princes helped them. After the two minutes of silence, he walked over to Mavis who was already busy with a plan to assign rooms to the Laomians. And while they were busy with the plans, Azeil watched the queen sleep peacefully in her bed, her chest rising and falling with each breath as he couldn’t help but wonder what her eyes looked like. The hours went by and at some point he had enough of sitting still and watching her and stood up to study her from closer. Sitting on the bed, he studied her heart-shaped face with the cute little nose and her plump lips that begged to be kissed as they were slightly parted. Moving his eyes over her face, he noticed the mark on her neck that was now an angry red and understood why she was asleep. His dear friend had marked her and he could feel his heart break at the thought of how much pain she is experiencing. Kairos must have sedated her to help her, he thought, his heart breaking at of how much pain she is experiencing, and stared back at her face, leaning in close as he imagined what her eyes would look like. Her eyes suddenly snapped open and quickly sat up when she saw the intruder, butting her head against his forehead in the process. She could feel her heart in her throat as she wondered who he was and if he meant any harm to her. “Looks like the lass is finally awake,” he groaned out with a heavy accent, rubbing his forehead with his hands while giving her a boyish smile as he stared into her violet eyes. “I’m Azeil by the way.” He almost said he was a good friend of Drakos, but stopped himself in time, knowing that if he said his name the poor girl will burst out in tears again and by seeing how red-rimmed her eyes were she had already done her fair share of crying. She kept staring into his orange eyes that seemed to hypnotize her as they looked so kind and vibrant and his ebony black hair that was tousled over his head, as if he woke up like it, gave him a young boyish look. It was different than from the neat and combed back hair Kairos had. And she would have thought he was around the same age as she weren't it for the pretty old-looking scar that dragged over his sharp jaw towards his neck. It was a thin brown line and she wondered why he hadn't healed it with their technology. Was it a reminder of something? But what surprised her the most was the instant feeling of trust and comfort, and it didn’t take long before she relaxed in his presence. “D-Did Kairos sent you.” Her voice barely a whisper as her throat felt like sandpaper. “Ahh, yes. His highness had to take care of some things and left me here to oblige to every command of you.” She chuckled softly as he deeply bowed to her, instantly liking the guy. “Would you like some water, my lady?” She didn’t answer him as she suddenly remembered why she was here and could feel the traitorous tears pooling in her eyes. “Don’t cry, lassie. Everything is going to be all right,” he assured her as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Shaking her head, she felt the tears marking their path, and she lunged herself in his arms as she loudly cried. “K-Kairos, wh-” Unable to finish her sentence due to her loud sobs, she wailed in his chest, soaking his shirt with her tears that could fill an Olympic swimming pool. “He should come back any moment,” he lied. He had no clue when he would come back, but he hoped soon as she needed him, her mela. Something he could never be to her, no matter how badly he wanted to be that person to her. Stroking her silky ebony hair, he said soothing words to her and heard a door opening. Thanking the goddess, he looked at Kairos whose eyes held undescribable pain. “You can go now, Azeil,” he ordered as he walked to the bed to take his place. “Can you come back tomorrow?” “Of course, your highness.” Adding a deep and dramatic bow to his words as a half sob, half laugh came from Caelyn who looked at him through teary eyes while clutching Kairos’ shirt in her hands. Azeil walked out of the room to his own and left the love couple on their own. “I’m sorry I had to leave,” he whispered to her, kissing her temple as he laid down on the bed with her in his arms. “It’s okay. I know you needed to reassure your people.” He was still a prince, and he had duties to take care of. She would never expect him to just drop everything and take care of her. “Do you like him?” Referring to Aziel as he had the feeling he was her third mela. The reason why he thought this was because Dragon males were known to be loners, only having one or two best friends and it often happened that their mela was the same person. “Yes, he has this aura around him that just makes you want to smile. Why do you ask?” She leaned up from his chest to look into his eyes. “No reason.” Although that was a lie. He had asked to know to confirm his suspicions, but her answer didn’t make him any wiser. Only time will tell, he thought as he stroked her back until she fell back asleep again, exhausted from all the events.
