Chapter 1

I was there when Mira Blake opened her new museum. I was standing outside the lounge when I heard them going at it through the closed door. Through the door, I heard Mira say, "Good cadaver specimens are so hard to come by. Lucky for us, Aria Hayes's mom died in a car crash two days ago, and her face was ruined beyond recognition. This is literally fate. With this display, your museum is gonna draw crowds like crazy." Then their teasing laughter came one after another through the door. I was just about to turn and leave when the door swung open and the two of them walked right out. When Eliot Cole spotted me, he quickly straightened his clothes, his face darkening. He snapped, "I was in here discussing business with Mira, and you were hiding outside eavesdropping. Is that how your mother raised you?" Mira stood off to the side, smirking like she was enjoying every second of it, and purred, "Eliot, her mom just passed away. She's not in a good mood right now. Don't be too hard on her." Eliot shot me a cold glare and sneered, "So what if she's dead? It's not like she'll never see her again. Didn't I arrange to have her mom made into a cadaver specimen? If she misses her mom so bad, she can come see her every single day." I should be thankful it wasn't my mom who died; otherwise, I would have blacked out from pure rage. Before this, Eliot and Mira had always called themselves brother and sister, so I couldn't really call him out for anything. But as time went on, their relationship got creepier and creepier, way too close for just siblings. After I dug into it a little, I found out the truth. Mira was always Eliot's first love, the one he had never gotten over. If Eliot's own mother hadn't just died recently, I would have exposed their whole scheme a long time ago. But now I had changed my mind. I was going to let Eliot uncover the truth slowly, all by himself. When I didn't say anything back, Mira deliberately melted into Eliot's chest and batted her lashes, all sweet and clingy. She cooed, "Eliot, you're being so scary. You frightened me. I'm so scared." Eliot cupped her cheek and rubbed it gently, soothing her as he said, "Don't be scared. I'm not angry at you." That was when a museum staff member hurried over. The staff member said, "Miss Blake, it's time for the unveiling of the new cadaver specimen. You two are supposed to pull the red cloth off it personally." Remembering they still had the main event to get through, Eliot snapped a warning at me. "Let me warn you now. When you see your mother's body in a minute, don't you dare come wailing and keening in my museum." He added, "Your mom was just a lowly commoner who never amounted to anything in life. For her to get to serve art after death? That's the kind of good fortune most people never get even after a hundred lifetimes of doing good deeds." I let out a cold, sharp snort at his words. Why would I cry for that old witch? Back when she found out I was carrying a girl, she schemed nonstop to force me to get rid of my baby. All that torture broke me, and I ended up with severe depression. I even tried to kill myself more than once to escape it. I had begged Eliot for help back then, but he just called me unreasonable and accused me of disrespecting his mother. Clenching my jaw at the memory, I stared right at Eliot and spat out a mocking reply. "I won't cry. And I'd never defile art... because you're the one who doesn't deserve it." A smack rang out. Eliot slammed his palm across my face. He said, "I don't have time to waste bickering with you today. I'm on my way to the unveiling. Go ahead and try wailing over your mother. I dare you." Right after that, Eliot headed for the unveiling hall with Mira, and the two of them pulled the red cloth off together.
