Chapter 3

Mira snickered to herself, all smug, and shot me a challenging glare. It was as clear as day what she was thinking. 'I could never beat her.' Right after that, Eliot ordered his men to wheel the cremator he had bought into the hall. Eliot said, "Mira, I dropped a fortune on this cremator. Today our art gallery gets both a donor cadaver for display and a working cremator. We are going to blow up overseas in no time." Mira was so moved she nearly burst into tears. Under Eliot's direction, his men slid the corpse into the cremator chamber. Just before his finger hit the ignition button, I called out a warning, saying, "Eliot. That's your mother lying in there. Are you absolutely sure you want to go through with this?" In three big strides, Eliot was on me. He clamped his hands around my throat and slammed me hard to the floor. He roared, "Shut your goddamn mouth. Don't you dare curse my mother. She is at the bridge club playing bridge right now. How could she be dead?" Then he snarled, his voice thick with rage, and added, "If I didn't think you were already mentally unstable, I would smash your stupid face in. My mom went to a famous fortune teller ages ago. He said this year would bring her nothing but booming good fortune. You think she's going to drop dead out of nowhere like your godforsaken mother?" I couldn't hold back a laugh. He was half right. His mom really was going to have that blazing good fortune he kept talking about. After all, she was already locked inside a cremation chamber. How much more fiery could she get? Just then, Eliot's secretary came sprinting over. The secretary said, "Mr. Cole. Owen called. He says he has something extremely urgent to tell you." Eliot grabbed the phone, and Owen's sharp, angry voice blared out from the speaker. Owen said, "Eliot. Your mother has passed away. What the hell are you still doing messing around at the art gallery? Get over here right now to arrange her funeral." Eliot snapped back, "Uncle Owen, that b***h Aria must have fed you a bunch of lies. My mom is fine. She's playing bridge right now. The one who's dead is Aria's mother." He added, "Uncle Owen, I have to cut this short. I'm busy here."
