Right after the call ended, Eliot stabbed me with a glare so sharp it could cut. He snarled, "Aria! You are holding a grudge against my mom for pushing you to have a son, so you go around cursing her. How did I never see what a venomous b***h you were before!"
The words had barely left his mouth when Owen came bursting through the door, his whole frame sagging with exhaustion. He demanded, "Eliot! Where is your mother's body? The hospital said you signed the donation papers for her. What the hell did you do with her?"
Eliot still refused to believe him. He insisted, "Uncle Owen, how many times do I have to tell you? The one who died is Aria's mom. My mom is fine. She's out playing bingo right now. Don't believe me? I'll call her to prove it."
The call connected in seconds, but the person who picked up was not my mother-in-law. It was Mira's mom.
Mira's mom and my mother-in-law had always been inseparable. They always met up to play bingo together, and Mira's mom was always cooking up nasty little tricks to get my mother-in-law to torture me.
Those tricks included forcing me to chug those disgusting herbal drinks, making me trudge through pouring rain to deliver homemade meals, and even making me wait on them hand and foot, pouring coffee while they sat playing bingo.
Mira's mom said over the phone, "Eliot, honey? Your mom finished her bingo game and went home to rest. She left her phone at my place." Then she hung up right after that, her voice shaking with guilt. I knew exactly why she was nervous. My mother-in-law had been hit by a car right outside her bingo hall. She probably still had no clue how to handle the mess.
Eliot bought every word Mira's mom said hook, line, and sinker. He said, "See that, Uncle Owen? I told you. My mom went home after bingo to rest."
Owen couldn't be bothered to argue with him about this nonsense. He said, "Just tell me where my sister's body is. I need to lay her to rest properly."
I spoke up quietly.
"They already cremated her and turned her to ash. They call it art."
Shock painted Owen's face, and he lunged forward, yanking Eliot hard by the collar. He demanded, "What the hell does Aria mean by that? What did you do to your own mother?"
Mira stepped forward, all wide eyes and trembling lip, putting on her best poor, pitiful act. She whined, "Uncle Owen, we just used Aria's mother's body to pursue our artistic dream. She's just sitting here cursing Auntie for no reason."
Owen slapped her hard across the face before she could even finish her sentence. He roared, "Shut your mouth! Don't think I don't know what's going on between you and Eliot. My sister may be blind to it, but I am not. You're a homewrecking mistress, and you actually have the nerve to strut around out in the open!"
When Eliot watched his precious girl get slapped across the face, his temper exploded. But he didn't dare do a thing to Owen, not when both he and his mom got every dime and favor from this man. He spat, "You b***h! All I did was turn your mom into a donor cadaver for an art exhibition and turn her organs into art pieces to give out as prizes. And you just had to ruin everything for me and Mira, didn't you? Let me tell you right now. We're getting divorced as soon as we get back."
I snorted coldly. "That is fantastic. I couldn't want anything more."
Eliot's uncle went deathly pale. He asked, "What did you just say you did to your mother?"
Eliot snapped, his nerves fraying to pieces. "Uncle Owen, how many times do I have to say it? That's Aria's mom, not mine!"
Eliot's uncle reared back and kicked Eliot square in the chest with every ounce of his strength. He shouted, "You monster! That's your own mother, and you're out here defiling her like this!"
Then he tore a death certificate out of his inner pocket and shoved it in Eliot's face. He yelled, "You bastard! Look for yourself. Who's the one that's dead!"
