When Ivy woke, it was still light outside. She had a brief moment of panic as she sat up, immediately thinking that Jacob and Lila would be furious with her for sleeping during the day, until she remembered what Jake had said to her. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and planted them on the floor, stretching out with a groan. She looked over as the door opened and Jake walked into the room, holding out his hand toward her.
“They’re ready for you” he said as she slipped her hand into his, nodding gently as she took a deep, slow breath in. Ivy walked out of the door to the room, looking down the corridor at Jacob who stood outside the room Michael was resting in with a furrowed brow and his hand resting on his chin. She inhaled deeply as she walked into the room, Lila looking up at her with the same expression.
“He’s looking better” Ivy said with a smile, seeing Michael’s colour had returned and a relaxed look on his face. “He is, Ivy. But we need to get rid of that thing before it finds a way out” Jacob said with a frown, pointing to the glass bottle Mia was standing beside. “I…” Ivy started, unsure of how they were even meant to start looking for ways to get rid of it. The entity was strong, she knew that already, but the cracked glass of the bottle confirmed that to everyone in the room.
“I don’t think it can stay in here much longer, Ivy” Mia said, looking up at her with worried eyes. “We’ll have to find a way of ridding ourselves of it, properly” Ivy said, looking to Jacob. She heard Hugh scoff behind Jacob, walking out from behind his father. “Just leave it with us, I’m sure we can get rid of it” he said, eyes dark as he looked at the bottle. “We don’t know how this thing works yet” Mia said, sighing and turning to face the group.
“How hard can it really be?” Hugh asked, walking to the mantlepiece and staring at the bottle. “Hugh, we should listen to the girls” Lila said, much to everyone’s surprise. “Why, so they can play hero for a little longer?” Hugh scoffed, reaching his hand out toward the glass bottle.
Everything suddenly turned slow motion to Ivy, seeing Hugh’s hand reaching out for the bottle. She could see the entity inside it pressing against the glass, beckoning him closer and closer until he was almost touching it. “No!” Ivy shouted, holding her hand out to Hugh. Her body charged up with tingles, her hand held out before her and everyone’s eyes widening as Hugh was forced backward through the air, knocking against the wall with a grunt and falling to the floor before scrambling up again.
Ivy’s eyes widened as she gasped, looking from Hugh to her hand, keeping it outstretched in front of her with fear of what had just happened, what she had just done. “You b***h”, Hugh spat, pushing off of the floor. Before she could even comprehend what to do, Jake’s hand gripped her arm and jolted her behind him. His Beta, Tom, as well as other members of his pack she didn’t know yet all joined him by his side as Hugh rushed for Ivy. She swallowed hard, still looking down at her hand as Jacob held his son back in the faces of the Alpha King and his pack.
“Hugh, enough” Jacob warned, hearing Jake’s growl from the pits of his stomach. “Why are they all protecting her” Hugh asked through gritted teeth, angry and humiliated. Ivy looked up at Jacob, her eyes flitting to Mia and then to Hugh, breathing heavily at the unknown of what had just happened. “What the hell was that?” Mia gasped in absolute astonishment and awe, running to Ivy’s side. “Ivy, that was amazing!” Mia cried with a smile, pulling her in for an excited embrace. “What did I do?” Ivy whispered, terrified of herself.
“It’s something your mother did. I remember her doing it a few times and showing my mother when you weren’t there” Mia excitedly gabbled. Ivy sat in the library, Jake stood by her side with his pack, Jacob, Lila and the remaining children on the other side of the library.
“Doing what, exactly?” Jacob asked, Mia’s eyes wide with excitement. “It’s so rare, hardly anyone was born with the gift for millennia and even then it was barely seen!” Mia gabbled, flicking through the pages of the book.
“It’s called psychokinesis, otherwise known as telekinesis. It’s the ability to be able to move a physical object without physical interaction. Basically, an ability to move things with just your mind. I read so much about it when I was younger because I was always so intrigued by it. So many witches were killed for their abilities because people didn’t know how to control them, so they just got rid of them before they could turn on packs or clans. That’s why there aren’t that many around and they’re barely seen. They always used to say that witches never knew about it until they were faced with a situation where someone was in danger who meant something so important to them, and it would just burst out in a way they had never even seen before! That’s why Ivy flung Hugh away, because touching that bottle would have meant that you put me, the Alpha King and his pack in danger!” Mia rambled.
Ivy sat staring at the floor as she tried to take it all in. “And how do we… learn to use this?” Jacob asked, Jake inhaling deeply beside Ivy. “We don’t. It’s up to Ivy whether she wants to pursue this… power, or not” he said. Ivy looked up as everyone fell silent and looked at her, waiting for her to say something. “Well, I’m sure you would want to do that here, Ivy. Where we can make sure you don’t hurt anyone” Jacob said to her. Ivy saw Mia's excited smile drop from her face and her head bow automatically in response to his tone, setting a deep anger in her core.
“No” she said, defiantly enough to make Jacob push up from his chair subconsciously, almost forgetting Jake was standing opposite him. “What did you just say to me?” he asked in the same tone he always did whenever the girls were in trouble. Ivy could see Mia shrinking away in fear from him, making her push off of her own chair and stand before him.
“I said, no” she said sternly. “Mia and I don’t belong to you. We go where we want, and we do what we want”, Ivy said, Jacob gritting his teeth in anger – she could see where Hugh got it from. She heard someone standing up behind her, the feet stopping as Jake held an arm out and presumably halted them, allowing her to continue. “You did for us what you thought was right. Now I am choosing what is right for us. We will stay until the celebrations are done, once Michael is awake and he has shifted without issue. Then we are leaving” Ivy said, staring him down.
“And where do you think you’re going to go?” Jacob scoffed. Ivy smirked a little, stepping forward and standing directly before him. “To look after my pack, just like a Luna should” she said, her hair falling down her back and exposing her neck. She watched his eyes flicker to her bite and then up to Jake, inhaling deeply and taking a step back. “As you wish” he said, turning away from her. “You’re serious?!” Hugh cried in annoyance, throwing his hands in the air and looking from his father to Ivy and Mia, then back again.
“This is ridiculous” Hugh scoffed, pushing past his father and walking out of the room, leaving the rest of them in silence. “We’ll stay until we know what to do with this, and until your festivities are over” Jake started, taking his place beside Ivy and sliding his arm around her waist. “When this is all over, Ivy and Mia will come with us, where they belong” he added, leaving a visible bitter taste in Clarissa’s mouth.
Ivy inhaled deeply as she looked at herself in the mirror and turned a few times to look at herself from different angles. “Are you sure?” she asked Mia, who was doing the same beside her with the exact same look on her face. “I mean, we could have had SO much worse” Mia said, the two sniggering to one another. Tonight was the big night – the packs would have an evening of celebration. Not just for Michael’s coming of age and the arrival of Jake and his pack, but the celebration of Michael’s recovery and good fortune.
The two girls felt very alien to it all, even with the knowledge that the two boys would be beside them the whole time. They knew that even though they both bore the mark of a mate, none of Jacob’s children accepted it as truth. It would make their evening so much more difficult if not for Jake and Tom being by their sides. That gave them a small shred of comfort.
Ivy inhaled deeply as they heard the music blare up through the floor, calling them down to join the packs for celebration. “I guess we should go, huh?” Mia asked, and Ivy gripped her hand comfortingly. “Let’s do it” she whispered, walking over to the door and pushing on the heavy oak. They heard the chatter of everyone start to get louder as they got closer to the steps, the two blushing and looking down at their feet as both Jake and Tom looked up at them with jaws hanging open.
“Boys” Mia muttered to her, making Ivy bite her cheek as not to burst into laughter. “You look beautiful, Ivy. And you, Mia” Jake said as they reached the bottom step, his hand outstretched to take Ivy’s. “Thank you” Mia blushed, gripping onto Tom’s bicep. Ivy looked around the bustling room, her eyes immediately diverting to the floor as she watched Clarissa stare at her and whisper something to Hugh, who’s eyes glared at her in anger. “Drink?” Jake asked, handing her a champagne flute. “Thank you” she replied, taking it and clinking the edge against his before taking a sip.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for being here” Jacob spoke to the crowd, a drink in his hand. Ivy stood beside Jake, his arm around her shoulders as she held a hand to his chest to ground herself, feeling quite uncomfortable under the stare of Clarissa from opposite her.
“In celebration of our Alpha King joining us here, and the coming of age of my son, Michael, who has made a full recovery from his illness… With thanks, of course, to our own Ivy and Mia” Jacob said, no one missing the bitterness in his voice when he spoke their names in thanks. Ivy swallowed the lump in the back of her throat as she caught the glare of Hugh and Clarissa from across the room, looking at Mia, who mirrored the same look back at her.
She gave a forced small smile as they all cheered and raised their glasses as music tinkled into the room and everyone started to mill about and chat. “I’m just going to pop outside, get some fresh air I think” Ivy heard Mia say to Tom. “I’m going to join Mia outside, get some fresh air” Ivy said, looking up to Jake. She smiled as he took her glass from her, leaving a kiss on her forehead and watching her as she walked outside.
“This is quite a lot…” Mia said as they stepped outside and walked down the patio, past the chatting group of people and over to the Pergola in the corner. “I know… I feel really uncomfortable being here” Ivy agreed as they sat down. “I can’t wait until we get to leave” Mia sighed, the two resting their heads back over the seat and letting out a breath of relief.
