Maya The house was quiet when Maya returned home, her footsteps muffled on the plush carpet. The living room glowed softly in the amber light of a single lamp. Her husband, James, sat on the couch, his head tilted back in exhaustion, his glasses perched crookedly on his nose. Their son, Liam, was already tucked in for the night, his soft snores emanating from upstairs. Maya walked over and gently kissed James on the forehead. He stirred and smiled at her. “You’re late,” he said, his voice warm despite his fatigue. “Long day,” she replied, brushing his hair back affectionately. “Come to bed?” James nodded, letting her lead him up the stairs. In their bedroom, the intimacy of the quiet night seemed to envelop them. Maya slipped into a satin nightgown, its fabric cool against her skin. She slid into bed beside James, who wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. But as his lips brushed against her neck, a wave of memories crashed over her. Unbidden, Victor’s face appeared in her mind—younger, softer, the man he had been before his true nature unraveled before her eyes. She remembered his touch, the way his voice would lower when he spoke only to her, the secrets they had shared in the dead of night. There had been a time when she had loved him, deeply and completely, blinded by the charisma that masked his darkness. Her body stiffened against James, and he paused, sensing her hesitation. “Maya?” he asked gently. She forced a smile, shaking her head. “I’m fine. Just tired.” James kissed her forehead and settled back into his pillow, his breathing evening out as sleep claimed him. But Maya lay awake, staring at the ceiling, haunted by the echoes of a love she wished she could forget. Ethan Ethan’s tiny flat was dimly lit by a single overhead bulb, casting long shadows across the cluttered room. Max lay curled up on an old blanket in the corner, his ears twitching in sleep. Ethan sat slouched on the couch, staring at an unfinished schematic sprawled on the coffee table in front of him. A knock on the door broke the silence. Ethan groaned and pushed himself up, opening the door to find Ava standing there with two paper bags in her hands. “You didn’t eat, did you?” she said, stepping inside without waiting for an answer. Ethan gave a weak smile. “Didn’t have time.” Ava set the bags on the table and started unpacking them. She handed him a sandwich and a bottle of water before settling onto the couch. “You can’t keep running yourself into the ground like this,” she said, her voice soft but firm. Ethan sighed, sinking back into the couch. “Some days, it feels like running is all I’ve got left.” Ava studied him for a moment, then reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Talk to me. What’s really going on?” For a long moment, Ethan said nothing. His gaze dropped to the floor, and when he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. “I’m scared, Ava. Of everything I’ve done. Of what’s still out there. Sometimes I feel like it’s all going to catch up with me, and I don’t know if I’ll survive it.” Ava shifted closer, guiding his head to her lap. She ran her fingers through his hair, her touch gentle and reassuring. “You don’t have to do this alone,” she said softly. Ethan closed his eyes, letting the tension in his body ease under her touch. The vulnerability he rarely allowed himself to feel was a fragile thing, but in that moment, he let it surface. Ava’s presence was a balm, soothing the raw edges of his fears. Their proximity grew intimate, unspoken emotions threading between them. Ava leaned down, her lips brushing his forehead. Ethan tilted his face up, and their eyes met. The moment lingered, charged and uncertain, before their lips met in a tentative kiss. It was slow, hesitant, and tinged with the unspoken complexities of their lives. When they pulled apart, Ava rested her forehead against his. “You’re not alone,” she whispered again, her voice resolute. Ethan didn’t respond, but the gratitude in his eyes said enough. For the first time in a long while, he allowed himself to believe her.
