MAYA'S REACTION

645 Words
Maya’s arms tightened around Sophia as she led her to the couch. Her friend’s face was pale, her hands trembling as she clutched a glass of water offered by one of the officers. Maya’s mind raced, replaying every strange event that had unfolded over the last few weeks. The pieces were beginning to form a picture, but the edges were still blurred, the center still missing. “Did you see their faces?” Maya asked softly, crouching down to meet Sophia’s eye level. Sophia shook her head. “Not clearly. They didn’t look like police, Maya. I... I think they were trying to break in.” Maya’s jaw clenched, her reporter instincts surging to the forefront. This wasn’t a random scare tactic. It was too calculated, too precise. “They weren’t just trying to scare you,” Maya said, her voice low. “They were here for something.” Sophia’s eyes widened. “You think they were going to—” “No,” Maya interrupted quickly, not wanting to fuel her friend’s spiraling fear. “Not that. But they wanted something, and they thought you had it.” Sophia set down the glass, her fingers pressing into her temples. “Maya, I don’t understand. I’ve done nothing, I’ve said nothing. Why would anyone come after me?” Maya hesitated. Should I tell her? How much does she need to know right now? Before she could respond, one of the officers returned from examining the hallway. “Ma’am, we’ve found signs of tampering on your lock. Whoever was here used professional-grade tools. This wasn’t just an amateur break-in.” Maya looked up sharply. “Professional? Like someone trained for this kind of thing?” The officer nodded. “Possibly. We’ve filed a report and will review CCTV footage from the area, but we recommend you stay somewhere secure for the next few days. Whoever this was, they were prepared.” Sophia’s face crumpled as the officer spoke. Maya put a hand on her shoulder, her resolve hardening. “Do you have a safe place to go tonight?” the officer asked. “She’s coming with me,” Maya said firmly. The officer nodded. “Good. If you notice anything suspicious, call us immediately.” As the officers left, Maya turned to Sophia, her voice softer now. “Pack a bag. You’re staying at my place for now.” Maya and Sophia’s Conversation Later that night, as they sat in Maya’s living room, the weight of the evening pressed down on them. Maya watched Sophia stare blankly at her tea, the tension etched into her face. “Sophia,” Maya began, choosing her words carefully, “I need to know if you’ve noticed anything strange before tonight. Anyone following you? Odd calls?” Sophia hesitated. “I... I thought I was just being paranoid. For the past few days, I’ve felt like someone was watching me. I saw the same car parked near my apartment several times. But I convinced myself it was nothing.” Maya’s stomach churned. She leaned forward, her voice low. “It’s not nothing. Whoever was at your apartment tonight knew what they were doing. And it’s not a coincidence that it’s happening now, after everything I’ve been digging into.” Sophia’s eyes snapped up to meet Maya’s. “This is about the bomb site, isn’t it? The story you’re chasing? Maya, if this is putting me in danger, you have to stop.” Maya shook her head. “I can’t. If we don’t uncover the truth, they win. And now, they’ve made it personal. First my sister, and now this.” Sophia’s hand shot out, grabbing Maya’s. “Don’t let them do to you what they did to her.” The room fell silent. Maya’s throat tightened, the memory of her sister’s death flashing through her mind like a wound reopened.
