The sun has been slowly rising above the horizon, casting a golden glow over the beach, and I can already hear the faint sounds of laughter and music drifting through the salty air. Today is the day of the charity beach volleyball tournament, and excitement buzzes in my veins like a double shot of espresso. I step onto the warm sand, feeling the grains shift beneath my feet, and I can’t help but smile. The beach is alive with energy, the kind that makes you forget your worries and just embrace the moment.
Caleb is already there, of course, his tall frame silhouetted against the vibrant sky. He’s chatting with a couple of volunteers, his laughter ringing out like a melody. He has not created new problems since our talk, but he has been a nit distant when we worked on the plans for today.
I can’t help but admire how good he looks in his casual beach attire… board shorts and a fitted tank top that clings just right to his athletic build, his hair windblown by the salty breeze. It’s a sight that makes my heart skip, but I’m not about to admit that to him.
“Hey, Ginnie! Over here!” he calls, waving me over with a grin that could light up the darkest day. I try to play it cool as I make my way through the scattered beach towels and eager volunteers.
“Looks like you’re having fun,” I say, crossing my arms as I approach him. “I hope you’re not planning to distract the competition with that smile of yours.”
He steps closer, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Oh, I wouldn’t dream of it. I’m just here to support our community, and especially my wonderful partner.” He leans in slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a big secret. “You know, the one who’s going to lead us to victory.”
I roll my eyes, trying to suppress a smile. “You really can’t help yourself, can you? You just have to try and charm everyone.”
“Only when I’m standing next to someone as brilliant as you,” he replies, his tone teasing yet sincere. There’s a playful glint in his eyes that makes me want to laugh and blush at the same time. “Seriously, though, you look amazing today. Ready to take on the world and Wow them all?”
I take a moment to adjust my sunglasses, hiding the warmth creeping up my cheeks. “Thanks, but I’m here to work, not win any beauty contests. Let’s focus on getting everything set up.”
“Work can wait! You have to appreciate the beauty around you, Ginnie.” He gestures to the ocean, where the waves crash rhythmically against the shore. “This is a perfect day for a tournament.”
I can’t argue with that. The sun is shining, the skies are clear, and the energy is contagious. “Alright, Mr. Mackinnon, what’s our first task?”
“Setting up the nets” he exclaims, grabbing the poles and looking at me expectantly. “I’d say teamwork is essential here, but I have a feeling I’ll be doing most of the heavy lifting.”
“Oh, really?” I challenge, crossing my arms and raising an eyebrow. “You think you can handle it all on your own?”
He smirks, showcasing that playful confidence I’ve come to expect from him. “Exactly. Just sit back and admire the view.” He motions to his biceps, flexing them comically. “You’re in good hands, trust me.”
I can’t help but laugh, shaking my head. “Fine, let’s see what you’ve got. But don’t blame me if you end up in the sand.”
As we work together to set up the net, the banter flows easily between us, punctuated by laughter and the occasional playful shove, and we somehow seem back to normal. With each passing moment, I feel the chemistry between us crackling like the waves crashing nearby.
He catches me looking at him more than once, and each time, I quickly avert my gaze, pretending to focus on the task at hand.
“Ginnie,” he says, leaning closer as he secures the net in place, “I have a confession.”
I look up, curious despite myself. “What is it?”
“I might be a little nervous about this tournament,” he admits, a hint of vulnerability breaking through his playful facade. “I mean, what if I trip and fall flat on my face? Or worse, what if I let you down?”
“Caleb, you’re not going to let me down,” I assure him, my voice steady. “You’ve worked hard for this, and I believe in you. Just focus on having fun and playing your best.”
He grins, the tension easing from his shoulders. “Thanks, Ginnie. I needed that. And hey, if I do fall, at least it’ll give you a good story to tell, right?”
“True,” I reply with a smirk. “I’ll make sure to add it to my collection of ‘Caleb’s Most Humiliating Moments.’”
As we finish setting up, the crowd begins to gather, and the energy ramps up even more. Teams start to warm up, and the sound of laughter fills the air. I glance at Caleb, who catches my eye and gives me a wink. My heart skips again, and I quickly look away, focusing on the task at hand.
“Let’s do this, partner,” he says, his voice low and filled with determination.
“Let’s win this thing,” I reply, my own competitive spirit igniting.
