His eyes

Chapter two Its almost the end of the day. Only one more appointment. Rachael and I are exhausted. Our next patient is a new patient.   Rachel and her husband Dan have lived here their wholes lives and know everyone and everyone’s business, so she perks up a little to meet the new guy. The front door opens and in walks..... not a farmer, thats for sure! Rachael and I stumbled over our greetings, but soon find our professionalism. “Hi. My name is Olive, and Im the Optical dispenser. How can I help?”  “I have an appointment. My name is Caleb” “No, worries. Yes we have you down for the 4:30. My colleague will take some further information from you as we have not seen you before and then I’ll take you through to our pre testing room”  Rachel will enjoy sussing everything out about Caleb. Where does he live, where does he work.  She gives me a quick wink before I head into the pre testing room, to enter his details into the machine. I have a few quiet minutes to myself.   Caleb Whitefield is delicious. Tall, slim, tight low jeans with a vintage band shirt on. He has tattoos on both arms and around his neck. I wonder what his tattoos mean and represent? He has a beautiful clean cut face thats framed with vintage style black rimmed glasses. He had piercing blue eyes and a genuine smile.  I can hear Rachael is finalising all the details with Caleb. I round the corner and usher him through to the pretesting room. It is dark and intimate in here. I go through the motions and explain what I’m doing and what each machine does. Caleb Squeals. I pretend to not have heard it. “you didn’t hear that girlish squeal from me okay” he laughs “I didn’t hear anything” I reply, but press my lips together to suppress the laugh. Caleb laughs. “I just don’t like the puffs. It scares me” We look at each other, possibly longer than usual and share a smile. Jen enters the room, asking for Caleb’s results and then she takes Caleb into her consulting room. I walk back out to Rachael. “Hot stuff is a teacher” she whispers. “What?? With all those tattoos. No way” “Yep. He got transferred from interstate. Guess which school he teachers at”  “Umm, I don’t really know anything about any of the Schools, Rach” I reply impatiently. “Oh yeah. Of course. Anywho, He is the new teacher for the Special School for vision impairment” “He works with blind kids??” Well that probably explains why a guy with so many tattoos can can get a job as a teacher. I am so intrigued now. I have so many questions.  After Caleb has seen the optometrist, it’s my job to assist him with choosing some glasses and taking measurements. He chooses quite fast- wanting something bright and fun. Caleb settles on a pair of matt emerald green plastic frames. So different, yet so fun. We exchange friendly banter while in the frame room looking at possible options. He is tall- perhaps 6 foot, has light brown hair that hangs in his eyes a bit, has a crooked smile and makes unbelievably long and intense eye contact. A few times, I was the first to look away.  Caleb sits down in front of me and our eyes are at level. His eyes alone are intriguing. They’re a mixture of blues- the deepest blue of the ocean to the the lightest blue of the sky before dusk. I knew I’m taking too long, but I’m just too mesmerised by his eyes. All too soon, Caleb blows out air as a sign of embarrassment and I can see he is blushing. GoodLord! I’m making him uncomfortable! I don’t want to be that person. After finalising his payment, and double checking his contact details, Caleb leaves the practice. Probably running down the hill trying to get away from me-as fast as he can.
