The young woman was exhausted from a long day at her university’s event. It was Intramurals week, and the school was packed with activities. She could barely drag her feet and wanted nothing more than to collapse onto her bed.
As she walked toward her room, she heard muffled moans. She paused and glanced back at a slightly open door—her stepfather’s bedroom. Closing her eyes, she tried to suppress her rising curiosity. Nothing good would come of this. She took a step away, but froze when a voice cried out.
“Ohh! You feel so good, Quin! You feel so good!”
She stood paralyzed. That wasn’t her mother’s voice.
“Shut up!” her stepfather hissed.
“Ahh! s**t! s**t! I’m going to c*m!” the woman screamed.
“f**k!”
Annoyed and unsettled, she approached the door and pushed it open. She gasped at the sight: her stepfather was on his knees, stripping off a condom, while a naked woman lay face-down on the bed with her eyes closed.
Her stepfather, completely bare, turned to look at her. Her heart pounded violently as their eyes met. He raised a stern eyebrow.
“What? Want to be f****d too?” he asked, his tone arrogant.
She clenched her fists, glaring at him in disgust.
“What are you talking about?” the woman on the bed chimed in.
Yoaquin stood up and faced the young woman directly. A wave of embarrassment washed over her as her gaze involuntarily landed on his imposing physique.
“Disgusting!” she spat out, turning her back on him. Yoaquin simply grinned.
Her heart raced so fast she felt as if she couldn't face him again. Confused and shaken, she headed straight to her mother’s room. She shoved the door open and found her mother getting dressed, seemingly preparing to go out.
“Mom,” she called out.
“Oh? What’s the problem?” her mother asked.
“I just saw your freaking husband having s*x with another woman. You’re really okay with that?”
Her mother stopped, walked over to her with a smile, and showed not even a flicker of pain. She couldn't understand it.
“Sweetheart, let him be. It’s better than him laying a finger on you. Would you prefer that?” her mother replied smoothly.
The young woman’s brow furrowed in disbelief. “What do you mean by that?”
Her mother stepped closer with a sly smirk and gently stroked her hair. “Adriana, whatever you see or hear inside this house, stay blind, deaf, and mute, okay? Let Yoaquin live his life. As long as we’re fine and living comfortably, it doesn’t matter. Under his roof, we will never go hungry. We get everything we want. Isn't the orphanage struggling with their financial funds? This is our only way to help them. So just leave him be, okay?”
The young woman gave a faint nod, though her mind was spinning. She never expected to hear such words from her own mother. She’s really accepting her husband’s betrayal? Confused, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
“I’m leaving now,” her mother continued. “It’s best if you lock yourself in your room for now. His woman is here, and she might pick a fight with you. Don’t let them see you. I’m off, bye. Just order whatever you want online. Next time, I’ll join you at the mall.”
Before Adriana could say another word, her mother was gone—likely heading to the casino again. Adriana collapsed onto the bed, taking a heavy breath. The scene she had witnessed earlier flashed repeatedly behind her eyelids. She swallowed hard and shook her head.
No, I shouldn't be thinking about that. I can't let these dark thoughts take over.
The thought sent goosebumps down her spine. She stood up and left her mother’s room. On her way back to her own room, she froze as her shirtless stepfather walked into the hallway, wearing only black trousers, sweat glistening on his forehead.
He stared at her, and Adriana immediately averted her gaze. His eyes felt magnetic, striking, and disorienting. It felt dangerous just sharing the same air with him. She couldn't meet his gaze through the suffocating tension between them.
As she tried to brush past him, he grabbed her and pinned her against the wall. Her eyes widened; there were only a few inches between their faces. Yoa gently held the back of her neck. Trembling, her body betrayed her as he drew closer. She closed her eyes as his warm breath brushed her neck.
She tried to pull away, but Yoa tightened his grip. She struggled, but he was far too strong.
“I know you feel it too, Adriana,” he murmured, his voice low and husky.
She stood frozen. She swallowed hard as his cool breath hit her earlobe, making her knees buckle. He caught her just before she fell, smirking as if he had won.
“Careful. You get on your knees so quickly.”
He stepped back, slipping his hands into his pockets as he looked down at her. His expression turned serious, almost cold.
“Next time, knock before you enter my room. Didn’t your mother teach you anything about privacy?”
“S-Sorry… my mom has nothing to do with this,” she stuttered.
“I’ll discipline you myself next time. Just relax for the time being. I’m not doing anything bad to you, but you’re acting as if I hurt you. Are you just disappointed you didn’t get to join in earlier?”
“You wish!” she snapped.
He merely shrugged, his eyes lingering on her. She couldn't help but notice his sculpted frame—his biceps, triceps, and the sharp definition of his abs. She felt guilty just looking.
“Enjoying the view?” he asked.
Adriana spun around quickly.
“I’m easy to talk to, Adriana,” he added behind her.
Ignoring him, she hurried away, the hair on the back of her neck standing on end from his words. He’s too much. I’m losing my mind. I shouldn't feel this way, but he’s so strange. She couldn't comprehend what her mother saw in that man aside from his money. His stare was intimidating—like that of a psychotic pervert.
She went straight to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water. Taking several deep breaths, she closed her eyes.
“What is wrong with you, Adriana?” she scolded herself, unable to process her emotions.
“Who are you?”
She turned around to see a woman in an extremely sexy nightgown. She had long legs and striking beauty. Stunned, Adriana couldn't find her voice.
The woman stepped closer, raising an eyebrow. “I asked, who are you?”
Adriana met her gaze, a surge of anger replacing her silence. How dare she act bold in this house?
“I’m the daughter of the Governor’s wife,” she replied coldly.
The woman looked momentarily surprised. “Oh! So you’re the product of Emma’s past fling. Great, at least her daughter isn't ugly.”
Irritated by her tone, Adriana turned to walk away, but the woman grabbed her hand. Adriana glared at her with furrowed brows.
“What?”
“I know you’re the one who walked into Yoa’s room earlier,” the woman said. “What are you up to? I assume you’re aware of what Yoa and I have. Not even your mom can defy him. Your stepfather is mine. Next time you interrupt us or try to play the hero, I’ll personally drag you out of this house. Don’t be a brat; you have no say here. Just follow your mother's lead. Or do you have a thing for Yoa too? Huh?”
Adriana stared at her in disbelief and yanked her hand away.
“Let’s say my mother and stepfather have an understanding. But don’t forget that she is still his legal wife. And don’t worry, I know who you are. You’re just a temporary distraction for my worthless stepfather. Don’t act like you’re the queen here when you know exactly why you’re in this house.”
Surprise flickered across the woman's face. “What did you just say?” she demanded angrily.
Adriana let out a bitter smile. “I said you’re just an outlet. If there was really something special between you two, why are you just here helping him blow off steam? Shouldn't you be living here officially by now?”
The woman laughed mockingly. “Really? Just wait. It won’t be long until I become the queen of this house.”
Adriana’s brow furrowed. “Is that so?” Though she tried to act unfazed, she sensed a strange confidence in the woman's voice.
“Shiela,” Yoa’s voice echoed.
Both women turned to see him standing there, his face deadpan.
“Yoa,” Shiela called out softly.
Adriana cast a harsh glare at him before storming out of the kitchen. She wanted to punch his face. Such a shameless womanizer. I feel the pain on my mother’s behalf. Angry and frustrated, she went back to her room and threw herself onto the bed, letting out a sharp sigh.
She wanted to confront her mother. How could she stomach all of her stepfather’s disrespect? Why? Endless questions raced through her head. She stared blankly at the ceiling until a soft click at the door made her sit up abruptly.
A moment later, Yoa stepped inside. His expression was grave, as if he carried heavy news. Adriana stood up instantly.
“W-What are you doing here?”
“I have bad news,” he said softly.
Her brows furrowed as a sudden wave of anxiety washed over her. “Just tell me.”
“Your mom was in a car accident.”
Adriana froze. Words failed her, and her mouth stayed slightly open in shock.
“Calm down,” he murmured, stepping forward to hold her arm.
She began to tremble violently. “Is Ma okay? Where is she?”
Within seconds, tears spilled over, and her legs gave out beneath her. Yoa remained silent as he guided her to sit on the chair.
“She’s dead,” he said flatly.
“N-No! My mother isn't dead! Please take me to her! You’re lying to me, right? Please... take me to her right now!” she pleaded, her voice breaking.
Yoa looked at her intently, then nodded.
Adriana rushed downstairs first, ignoring Shiela as she passed her in the hallway.
“Where are you going?” Shiela called out to Yoa, but he ignored her and hurried after Adriana.
Adriana scrambled into the car, sobbing hysterically. She stayed silent the entire ride, biting her thumb while staring blankly out the window.
When they arrived at the hospital, they rushed inside and were met by a nurse who led them directly to the emergency room. Her mother was lying on a gurney in the corner, covered in blood and lifeless.
Her body trembling, Adriana approached the bed and threw her arms around her mother. Her heart felt as though it was being crushed, and a heavy lump in her throat made it hard to breathe.
“Mommy!” she sobbed, holding her tight. “Wake up,Mom! Don’t leave me! What am I supposed to do now? Mom, please, don’t leave me. I can’t do this!”
Yoa watched her silently, his fists clenched tight. “Mom..”he uttered, a strange mix of pain and sorrow trailing his voice.
A nurse stepped in to move her mother's body, but Yoa subtly signaled her to wait. Adriana fell quiet as she hugged her mother, gently stroking her face while tears continuously streamed down her cheeks.
Suddenly, her mother’s wig shifted and slipped off.
Adriana gasped, covering her mouth as she turned to look at Yoa in utter confusion.
“We can talk when you calm down,” he said quietly.
Adriana closed her eyes and beat her chest in agony. Her mother had kept so many secrets. And now that she was gone, the path ahead felt more terrifying and uncertain than ever.
“Mommy…I can't do this. It’s so unfair,” she whispered brokenly.
