I woke up early that morning, took a shower, and got dressed.
Today was my first day at school.
I fixed myself up before going downstairs. When I reached the kitchen, I immediately saw Bulma.
“Good morning, Bulma.”
“Good morning too, beautiful. That uniform looks good on you,” she said.
I immediately felt shy.
“Oh, look at you! Getting shy now?” she teased.
I sat down and started eating.
My class was scheduled for eight in the morning, so I had to get ready early.
“You must be excited for your first day, huh? I’m sure a lot of people will notice you. With a face like that, it’s impossible for your classmates not to pay attention to you.”
I smiled.
A few moments later, I suddenly stopped chewing when Yoa sat down in his usual chair and started eating as well.
I wondered why he was up so early.
“I’m the governor of this town. A public servant. Stop staring. I know what you’re thinking.”
I looked at him.
“Why? What am I thinking?”
He served some food onto his plate before looking at me.
“Why I’m here eating this early?”
I gasped.
Was he a mind reader?
Maybe he was the one hiding one of the Dragon Balls Bulma had been looking for.
I almost laughed at the thought.
“Funny?”
I immediately froze.
I shook my head.
“You’re getting on my nerves.”
I glanced at Bulma.
She was discreetly signaling me to stop talking.
I immediately obeyed and continued eating.
A few moments later, Yoa finished his meal.
“Faster. No one is driving you today. I might leave you on the street.”
“Huh?”
He stood up and left the kitchen.
I quickly finished my food.
“Why were you laughing earlier?” Bulma asked.
“It seems Yoa can bring more than just a dead body back to life. He can even bring his irritation to life,” she added.
I laughed.
“I only laughed because I thought he looked like a mind reader. Maybe he’s the one hiding one of the Dragon Balls you’re looking for.”
Bulma went silent.
A few seconds later, she burst out laughing.
“Damn!”
I couldn’t help laughing too.
I stood up and began arranging the things we had eaten.
“You really are full of nonsense, girl. You know, I’m only holding myself back around you because I know you’re innocent. You might get shocked by the things I say.”
She shook her head, still laughing.
“But damn, you’ve got something hidden in there too, huh? Don’t worry. This stays between us.”
She leaned closer.
“He really does have the two Dragon Balls. Not just one. And do you know how safe they are? They don’t break, and they can even bring life!”
She grinned.
“Your mother is lucky. Looks like she really got hit by a meteor.”
I frowned.
“Pardon?”
“Oh, you really don’t know? That’s your assignment, then. Now hurry up before Yoa kicks you out himself for taking too long.”
I nodded and fixed myself one last time.
I said goodbye to Bulma and grabbed my bag.
I wanted to see my mother before leaving, but she probably wasn’t awake yet. She had gone out last night, so she might have only returned sometime early this morning.
When I stepped outside, I immediately saw the deep frown on my stepfather’s face.
“What are you looking at? Time is running. How dare you make me wait?”
I quickly walked toward the car and got inside.
Yoa immediately sped off.
I avoided looking at him because I didn’t want to make him even angrier.
The car was going incredibly fast.
Or maybe I simply wasn’t used to riding in a car like this.
My chest felt heavy.
Honestly, I would have preferred walking even if the school were miles away rather than being trapped in the same space with him.
I didn’t even want to breathe the same air as him.
I felt like I was suffocating.
“Sorry,” I blurted out.
Yoa said nothing.
He simply slowed the car down a little.
“I-I won’t do it again. I promise. I’ll move faster next time. If possible, I won’t make you wait anymore. I’ll be the first one here at the car, or I’ll just take a taxi.”
Our eyes met through the rearview mirror.
“You better. I still have a lot of things to do. Don’t add to my stress.”
“You’re stressed?”
He didn’t answer.
“Your personal driver will arrive tomorrow. He’ll be the one to drive you to and from school. I just hate feeling like you’re turning me into your personal driver in my own car.”
I scratched my head.
“Sorry.”
“Stop saying sorry. You’re annoying.”
I took a deep breath and said nothing.
I was afraid he might actually have high blood pressure because of how angry he always seemed to be with me.
“What did Bulma say to you?”
“Huh?”
“I know you took a while because you were gossiping with her. Don’t believe everything she tells you, okay?”
I simply nodded so the conversation wouldn’t get any longer.
“What exactly did she tell you?”
“It was nothing. She just said something about you having the two Dragon Balls. That they’re safe, they don’t break, and they can bring people back to life.”
Yoa suddenly slammed on the brakes.
I nearly flew forward.
“What the hell?” I complained.
“That old hag!” Yoa snapped.
I looked at him, confused.
“Why? Was she lying? It’s okay. I don’t really care. I know she’s just messing with me.”
“Good. Don’t believe that witch.”
Old hag.
Now witch.
I could only shake my head.
A few minutes later, we arrived at a massive gate.
Beyond it stood an enormous school.
“Do you want me to take you inside?” Yoa asked.
“Oh, no. I can manage on my own.”
His jaw tightened at the way I said po.
“Do you have money?”
I shook my head.
He took out his wallet and handed me two thousand pesos.
“What’s this for?”
He looked at me as if he were already bored.
“Use your brain, you i***t. How are you going to get home without money? I have a lot of things to do. I won’t be able to pick you up.”
I froze.
Yoa really had a way of hurting people with his words.
Why did my mother even marry him?
I quietly nodded.
“You read the handbook, right?”
I nodded.
Yoa took a deep breath and looked at me.
“Remember what we talked about last time? Don’t trust anyone. You can ride with them, but don’t trust them so easily.”
I nodded again.
“Thank you.”
He reached down near my feet and picked something up.
Then he handed it to me.
I stared at it in surprise.
It was an expensive-looking cellphone.
“This is for me?”
He nodded indifferently.
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
I didn’t really need a cellphone.
“Throw it away. Up to you.”
I frowned.
I opened the paper bag and smiled when I saw what was inside.
“Thanks,” I said again.
I looked at my stepfather.
He was checking his watch.
I immediately straightened up and opened the car door.
“Take care. Thank you.”
I stepped out and carefully closed the door.
Yoa immediately sped away.
I watched the car disappear and shook my head.
That man probably didn’t know how to enjoy anything in life.
