Episode 8: Shadows Behind the Truth The black SUV remained parked across the street. Its tinted windows concealed whoever sat inside, but its presence was impossible to ignore. The engine idled quietly as though its occupants had nowhere else to be. Hidden behind the dark glass, a pair of watchful eyes remained fixed on Florence’s small house. Inside, Florence stood frozen, Barrister Daniel Joe’s words still echoing in her ears. “Someone asked me to represent you.” She lowered the phone slowly, her thoughts racing. Who would go to such lengths for her? She had spent years believing she was invisible—just another wife trapped in a marriage filled with betrayal and silent suffering. Yet now, someone was watching. Someone knew what Gilbert was planning before she did. The mystery frightened her as much as it gave her hope. “Mummy?” Angela’s soft voice broke through her thoughts. Florence quickly wiped her eyes and forced a smile. “Yes, sweetheart?” “The eggs are getting cold.” Florence nodded gently. “I’m coming.” She slipped the phone into her wrapper and joined the children at the table. They laughed quietly as Divine smeared boiled egg across his tiny cheeks, unaware that his future was already becoming the center of a dangerous legal battle. For one precious moment, Florence allowed herself to forget everything. She watched her children laugh. She listened to their innocent voices. She memorized their smiles. Because deep inside, she feared Gilbert would try to take those moments away from her. ⸻ Across town, Gilbert sat inside a luxurious office. The polished wooden furniture, expensive paintings, and cold air-conditioning reflected a world Florence had never been invited into. Barrister Kenneth Bassey closed a thick file and looked directly at him. “You understand that custody cases aren’t won by emotion.” Gilbert leaned back confidently. “I know.” “They’re won by evidence.” Gilbert smiled. “That’s why I’m here.” The lawyer adjusted his glasses. “Your wife has been the children’s primary caregiver for years. The court will consider that.” Gilbert’s smile faded slightly. “Then we’ll give the court something else to consider.” He reached into his leather briefcase and placed several documents on the desk. Bank statements. Medical reports. Photographs. Kenneth studied them carefully. “You’ve prepared quite a file.” Gilbert folded his arms. “My wife has no stable income.” He slid another paper forward. “The house is behind on rent.” Another document followed. “She has debts.” Then another. “And she’s emotionally unstable.” Kenneth looked up. “Can you prove that?” Gilbert’s expression hardened. “I’ll make sure I can.” A slow smile spread across the lawyer’s face. “Good.” Neither man noticed the young receptionist standing outside the slightly opened office door. She wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. She had simply come to deliver coffee. But every word she heard sent a chill through her. Because she recognized one name. Florence. ⸻ Meanwhile, Barrister Daniel Joe arrived at Florence’s home just before noon. He was neatly dressed in a charcoal-gray suit, carrying a slim leather briefcase. Mama Grace happened to be sweeping the compound when he entered through the gate. “You must be Barrister Daniel,” she said. He smiled politely. “I am.” Florence stepped outside cautiously. “You came.” “I promised I would.” She invited him inside. The children quietly moved into the bedroom while the adults sat in the modest sitting room. Daniel placed several documents on the table. “I’ve reviewed everything sent to me.” Florence looked surprised. “So… you’ve seen all the evidence?” “I have.” He tapped the brown envelope. “These photographs alone tell a damaging story.” He paused before continuing. “But this case is no longer only about Gilbert’s infidelity.” Florence frowned. “What do you mean?” Daniel’s face became serious. “He isn’t trying to punish you.” “He’s trying to control you.” Silence settled over the room. Daniel continued. “If he gains custody of Divine, he believes you’ll eventually give up everything else.” Florence felt a knot tighten in her stomach. “He knows Divine is your greatest strength.” Tears filled her eyes again. “I’ll never stop fighting for my son.” Daniel nodded. “I believe you.” He opened another file. “But we need more than determination.” He carefully spread several legal papers across the table. “I’ll need every hospital record from Divine’s birth.” Florence nodded. “I kept everything.” “School records for Angela and Tracy.” “I have them too.” “Receipts.” “I saved most of them.” “Photographs.” “Hundreds.” Daniel smiled for the first time. “Good.” “You’ve been documenting your children’s lives without realizing it.” He leaned forward. “Those memories may become the evidence that saves your family.” ⸻ As Daniel prepared to leave, his phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen. Unknown Number. He answered cautiously. “This is Daniel.” A distorted voice spoke quietly. “She’s in danger.” Daniel’s expression changed immediately. “Who is this?” “You don’t have much time.” “What are you talking about?” “Gilbert isn’t acting alone.” The line crackled. “There are powerful people helping him.” Daniel stood motionless. “Who are you?” “If Florence stays in that house tonight…” The voice hesitated. “…she may never get another chance to fight.” The call ended. Daniel stared at the silent phone. For the first time in years, even he felt afraid. ⸻ Unknown to Florence, the black SUV was still parked outside. Inside, a woman lowered a pair of binoculars. She was elegant, confident, and dressed in black. In her hand was a photograph of Florence holding Divine shortly after his birth. She traced Florence’s face with one finger before whispering, “You’ve suffered enough.” The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror. “Should we tell her?” The woman slowly shook her head. “Not yet.” “What if Gilbert moves first?” Her eyes remained fixed on the house. “He will.” A faint smile crossed her lips. “And that’s exactly what I’m waiting for.” As the SUV drove away, neither Florence nor Daniel realized that the battle before them was far greater than a custody case. Hidden secrets were beginning to rise. Old enemies were preparing to return. And somewhere in the shadows, a truth buried for years was finally ready to be uncovered.
