Her mind was in turmoil as she sat at the kitchen table, her breakfast forgotten. Irvin Yun being the director for the movie adaptation of her book was like a stab to her heart. She had spent years trying to forget him, to move on from the pain he had caused her, and now fate had brought them back together.
Ethan watched Skyler's reaction with concern, not fully understanding the depth of her emotions. He reached out and placed a comforting hand on her arm.
"Miss Katz, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Skyler took a deep breath, trying to compose herself.
"I'm... I'm fine," she managed to say, her voice trembling slightly. "It's just... Irvin Yun. He... he was the one who broke my heart."
Ethan was taken aback, his eyes widening in surprise. Skyler had never spoken about her past with him, leaving Ethan completely unaware. However, he knew that Skyler had suffered a heartbreak before they met, caused by a person who was not worthy of her. He squeezed her arm gently, offering his support. "I had no idea. I'm so sorry."
Tears welled up in Skyler's eyes, threatening to spill over. She wiped them away, refusing to let her emotions consume her.
"Thank you, Ethan. I appreciate your support. The thing is…how can I work with him?"
Ethan's gaze softened, his voice filled with determination.
"You don't have to do anything you're uncomfortable with, Miss Katz. We can turn down the offer if you want. Your well-being is more important than any movie."
Skyler shook her head, a resolute look in her eyes. "No, Ethan. I won't let him ruin this opportunity for me. I've worked hard for this, and I won't let my past hold me back. I'll face him, but on my terms."
Ethan nodded, understanding and admiration evident in his eyes. "Alright, Miss Katz. We'll make sure you have a safe and comfortable working environment."
Skyler was feeling overwhelmed by her anxieties, but she found solace in writing. She poured her heart and soul into her work, crafting a story that mirrored her struggles.
The following day, when she read what she had written the night before, she couldn't believe it. She let out a loud groan and banged her head on her desk.
"What the heck? What am I even writing?"
Ethan went to Skyler's house as planned but couldn't find her on the basement floor. As he looked around the room, he noticed a pile of papers scattered on the floor near the trash can. Knowing that Skyler liked to write on paper whenever she needed a break from her routine, Ethan was curious and picked up a page to read it. To his surprise, the story on the paper was filled with unpleasant words of cursing directed at an ex-boyfriend. Ethan sighed heavily because he knew Skyler's words were directed at her ex, Irvin.
“She’s totally not okay at all.”
When Ethan finally found Skyler on the balcony, she looked even worse than before. She was lying on the deck chair, staring into space.
"Did you get any sleep, Miss Katz?" Ethan asked, coming out onto the balcony.
"I can't do this," Skyler replied.
"What do you mean?" Ethan asked.
"I can't work with Irvin," Skyler said, sitting up fast.
"But the date is getting near. You can't back out now," Ethan reminded her.
Skyler thought of something. “Did he know?”
“Know what?”
She turned to face him with curiosity. “Did he know…” she pointed to herself. “Did he know that I’m Skyler?”
“What do you mean?”
Skyler pointed to herself again. "My author's name is Lar. D-Katz. It's not Skyler. He might not know that the author is me."
Ethan had no idea, but he stood there, watching Skyler as she stood up and gazed out at the scenery.
"It might be the case, or he wouldn't want to collaborate with me," she said, thinking deeply.
"Even so, Miss Katz, if he backs out, it will be his loss. But you have to stand tall and be professional. Don't let him mock you," Ethan advised.
Skyler nodded and took a deep breath. "Okay, you're right."
When the day finally came for Skyler to meet Irvin Yun, she was filled with a mix of nerves and determination. She stood outside the company, took a deep breath, and nodded.
"I can do this."
Ethan stood beside her and sighed. "Are you ready to go in? You've been standing here for 20 minutes now."
Skyler looked at him in protest. "But it's not time yet."
Ethan sighed again. “You’re the one who insisted on coming early.”
Skyler slapped him on the shoulder. “Hey, zip it. Don’t say that out loud. I don’t want to look desperate.” Then she took another deep breath and made her way inside the company.
“Love really messes with people’s hearts.” Ethan shook his head and followed behind.
They stood inside an elevator going up to the 3rd floor, where the meeting was located. Skyler walked into the meeting room, her head held high, ready to face her past. Two men stood up as she entered the room, surprised to see her. They quickly composed themselves and shook hands with her and Ethan before gesturing for them to sit down.
"You surprised us all, Miss Katz. We all thought you were a mister," the older man said with humor in his voice.
Skyler chuckled. "I get that a lot. My apologies."
Irvin might not know that she was the author then. Skyler thought quietly inside.
"No no no… This is great! This is awesome!" the older man exclaimed.
"I am honored to be here," Skyler replied, looking around the room. "So, is it just the two of you, or are we waiting on someone?"
"No, just the two of us. We are the ones who are interested in your book, 'Once a Story.' We are so glad you took the offer," the older man said with a bright smile. "You can call me Will. I am the producer here. And this is my assistant, Nick."
Skyler nodded at both of them and said, "Nice to meet you, Will and Nick". "But I thought the director was supposed to be here?"
"Director Irvin?" Will turned to Nick, and Nick gave out an apology smile.
"On the contract, yes, he was supposed to be here," explained Nick. "Unfortunately, he couldn't attend this meeting and told me to send his apologies."
Skyler tried not to show her disappointment. She had been preparing herself for this, and all for nothing. "Oh, I see. Hopefully, we can reschedule another meeting when he's available."
Will smiled at her and said, "Of course, we will make sure to arrange that. So, let's get started with our discussion about your book."
