The white-clad youth observed the subtle shifts in her expression with amusement, though this fleeting thought was soon overshadowed by his disdain. To him, humans were nothing more than insignificant pests, no matter how intriguing they might seem. He recalled how easily Ying Zaozao had escaped his grasp earlier, igniting a surge of anger within him. After a moment, he coldly remarked, “Lowly human, your skin is as thick as it is worthless. You claim to be useful, yet I doubt you could withstand even five warriors.”
“What do you mean?” Ying Zaozao asked, bewildered. Did this mean she had to fight werewolves? The situation was taking a turn for the worse.
The youth raised an eyebrow, his tone sly. “What do I mean? Can you guarantee survival against five werewolves attacking you consecutively?”
Ying Zaozao’s eyes widened in shock. The youth’s words struck her like a thunderbolt. She hurriedly protested, “I-I didn’t mean that kind of usefulness! Please don’t misunderstand!”
“Misunderstand?” The youth sneered. “Humans under our control have no other use but to be slaves, servants, or s****l tools.”
Sexual tools? Ying Zaozao nearly spat out her breakfast in shock, but she managed to contain herself. There was no point in making the situation worse in the cramped cage.
As they proceeded through the canyon, small houses began to appear, densely packed like a slum stretching from the base of the mountain to the sheer cliff. The people there saw the approaching carriage and immediately dropped what they were doing, kneeling respectfully with their faces pressed to the ground until the carriage had passed.
Further along, the houses became sparser, and soon the landscape turned monotonous again, giving way to a multitude of caves dotting the cliffside. The sheer number of these caves was staggering, and occasional glimpses of wild beasts flitted by, their imposing figures starkly contrasting with the earlier refugees.
“What is this place?” Ying Zaozao wondered aloud, realizing she seemed to be entering a den of wolves, and danger was drawing near.
“This is Panqiu Valley, the dwelling place of our Crimson Wolf Clan. Once you enter here, escaping is no longer an option,” the youth said, having covered his nose and mouth with his sleeve as they passed the slum, as if the air there was polluted. He only uncovered his face once they were out of that area and began to breathe the fresher air.
Seeing his disdainful demeanor, Ying Zaozao felt a surge of anger but lacked the courage to confront him. Instead, she tried to placate him. “Why do you hate humans so much?”
“Don’t you know?” The youth’s smile was tainted with scorn.
Ying Zaozao, without thinking, blurted out, “Because we’re weak?”
“Exactly. Not only weak but also incredibly greedy.”
“Hmm.” Ying Zaozao adjusted her position to alleviate some discomfort.
It was clear that the youth’s hatred for humans was deeply ingrained, and changing such a deep-seated belief was not something she could do in the moment. As she ventured deeper into the wolves' lair and the danger approached, she had no choice but to try and appease the beast before her.
“Hey! Handsome, let me tell you a secret.”
The youth chuckled at her comical gesture and expression. “Are you trying to curry favor or deceive me?”
Damn, he’s quick-witted! Ying Zaozao was slightly put off but refused to back down. “I’m not from your world. I somehow crossed over here. I don’t know if this place is ancient or futuristic, but I’m from the 21st century. My name is Ying Zaozao, a high school student. In our world, there are no werewolves, so I was shocked to see you all.”
“Oh?” The youth squinted, scrutinizing her. “Given your attire, you do seem out of place compared to our people.”
Seeing that he was slightly intrigued, Ying Zaozao pressed on. “It’s true, I’m not from your world. As a guest from another realm, you can’t treat me as a s****l tool!”
The youth burst into laughter, his long eyelashes fluttering, and a glimmer of amusement danced through his hair.
Ying Zaozao tilted her head, noting how strikingly handsome he was. If he weren’t a werewolf, how many girls would be lining up to chase after him?
After laughing enough, the youth stood up, placing a foot on the iron cage and speaking with a hint of mockery, “For now, you should stay in the cage and not entertain any delusions. I won’t help you. But if you truly wish to avoid that fate, perhaps you should appeal to the chief. He might allow you a more gradual approach.” With that, he laughed heartily and jumped off the carriage.
Ying Zaozao gripped the iron bars, her fingers making a clinking sound. She closed her eyes, letting her nearly bloodshot eyes rest. After a while, she grunted in frustration, cursing inwardly, “If I can’t escape today, so be it. But if I do get away, I swear I’ll skin you and pull your tendons!”
With a deep sigh, she suddenly shouted, “Heaven! Strike me down with a lightning bolt!” Her voice echoed through the canyon, resonating off the cliffs.
At the end of Panqiu Valley lay the fortress of the Crimson Wolf Clan—Dago City. It was intricately embedded within the valley, blending seamlessly with the landscape. From the city gates, one could see massive round buildings sprawling along the ridge, reaching up to the clouds. The entire fortress was bathed in a purple-red glow, exuding an imposing grandeur.
Ying Zaozao was lifted from the carriage by two werewolves and escorted deeper into the fortress. Her mind was blank with uncertainty about where she was being taken. Surrounded by the unfamiliar and foreboding environment, she felt as though disaster had fully descended upon her.
