Chapter Two

The warm air blows past us however, it did little to none as goosebumps crawled all over my skin. Facing an alpha of a powerful pack is one thing but an angry one is a totally different story. Suddenly, the surroundings around us have gone silent—even the wind stilled as if aware of the Alpha's wrath and all we can hear is Levi's whimpers as he continued to hold on to my leg. "Levi! Come. Here. Now!" the Alpha again commanded, his burning gaze glowering at the child. His voice, steady in an angry calm. The Alpha growled seeing Levi refusing his call and command and decided to strode towards us—his footsteps swift but heavy. His companions followed suit in a dispersed semi-circle purposely surrounding us. Sensing his alpha drawing near, Levi began to bawl and gripped tightly on my pants leg tugging it as if telling me to turn my back to his alpha and run away which made me almost welcome the thought of fleeing but I stood my ground and balled my hands into a fist, keeping them from trembling. This is my territory which he's trespassing right now. I can't let him act as he pleases. "Wait!" I commanded, feeling brave all of a sudden as I stared down at him meeting his intense gaze with mine. He halted as his brows furrowed as if he had just noticed our presence and inhaled deeply, his electric blue eyes turning into jet-black ones. "Please. You're scaring the child," I added pleading, losing all my confidence as the Alpha began to prod towards us—his footsteps careful and calculated—almost stalking as if he's on a hunt. Well, maybe he is. Damn, did I piss him off more? "Give me that child and I'll guarantee your safety," he dictated his whole demeanor devoid of any emotions, his onyx eyes roaming every inch of my body probably sizing me up. My body involuntarily shivered under his scrutiny. I took deliberate breaths as I held Scarlett's elbow sensing her irritation. We can't afford bloodshed, after all. We possibly can take down one or two of them but surely, it'll be at our own peril. The Golden Dawners are practically trained for combat at the age of eight years old, which branded them as a fearsome pack. I inhaled slowly willing my nerves to calm down, knowing what I need to do next. I looked down at Levi, who has begun to hiccup after crying so hard, gently removing his small hands, untangling them from my leg, and crouched low peering into his tear-stained face. "It'll be alright, Levi. Your alpha's not mad, he's just worried," I softly stated hoping to ease his fears and worries as I wipe his tears and snot with the sleeves of my sweater. He nodded in response as he put his arms around my neck—hugging me, burying his face between the crevice of my neck eliciting a growl from the Alpha. I held the child in my arms, stroking his back hoping to calm him down somehow, and met the Alpha halfway ignoring Scarlett's protest as she growls to the Alpha and his hunters. As I began walking with Levi in my arms, the Alpha halted his steps and ran a hand through his hair making it, even more, messier than it already is as he took deep rapid breaths—his face stricken with confusion as he again deeply inhaled the air some more. I gasped my eyes widening as he for no apparent reason, suddenly bit his forearm hard drawing blood which shocked both Scarlett and me and even his companions. This guy must be batshit crazy! "Moore. Get Levi," he ordered among his companions—his voice unnervingly low and rough as he wipes his blood off his lips without breaking eye contact with me and a ponytailed man with chestnut brown eyes broke among their ranks. Before the Alpha could turn his back to us, I got hold of his arm stopping him. Me being dumb miscalculated and got hold of his bloodied forearm instead of his good one and immediately released him as an electrifying shock run-up through my whole body as if I was electrocuted. "Are you alright?" I find myself asking and cleared my throat masking the awkwardness as he stared into my eyes as if searching for something in them—waiting for recognition. But recognition for what? "Please, don't hurt the child," I hastily added, balling my bloodied hand into a fist strangely still feeling tingly. "Why would I hurt my only brother and heir?" he scoffed as if the mere thought is such a folly. I merely nodded not a bit startled with the information for they have an uncanny similarity from their golden-hair, caramel skin to their electric blue eyes. I handed Levi to the guy named Moore, who gently took Levi from my arm noticing that despite what happened the child had fallen asleep still clutching the flowers in his hand as if it’s his lifeline. The Alpha then took a step closing our scant proximity—towering over me with his broad shoulders and lean-athletic build and proceeded to reach for my bloodied hand with the hanky he pulled from the back pocket of his black jeans. I winced partly due to our skin touching, however, mostly with his tall intimidating built as I made a mental note that my height barely made it past his shoulders and he is even slouching as he wipes the blood—what more if he’ll stand to his full height. Is this a perk of having alpha genes? I wondered. "Stay still," he ordered as I started to protest, his voice ragged as he took multiple quick breaths—his hands working in getting his blood off my hand with the soft white handkerchief. "I could wash them off me on my ow—" I started to reason with him as I grimaced not liking how my hand trembled. I cannot show that I'm afraid. I cannot show him fear. I chanted in my mind—my mantra, trying to calm my nerves and keep my hand from trembling. Usually, this would work but it seems not this very moment as I look at my hand still damn trembling. "I know, but I don't like seeing bloodied hands," he declared and let go of my hand as he completely wipes his blood off me. "Don't let me ever see you again and I apologize for the troubles my brother has caused... and for trespassing," he stated after a long pause without looking me in the eyes as I look up to his face, his voice gruff, and abruptly left with his companions in tow before I could even respond to him. Leaving me with my puzzled thoughts making me topple over the hard ground as my knees suddenly can no longer hold my weight—my body cold and trembling. So cold making me gulp down air as it gets harder to breathe. ☆●✧●☆ That night, Scarlett and I hurriedly returned to the pack house after I calmed down albeit still feeling cold—her still pissed off, grumbling about the Golden Dawners audacity as I silently thought back about what happened with the bizarre alpha. We breeze past trees as we raced back to the pack house for Scarlett received a mind link from our lead hunter that they finally found and successfully captured my father after three days of him missing in his wolf form chasing some fragments of my deceased mother. Luckily, he was able to turn back to his human form giving our hunting squad a chance to capture him without hurting him. "The council is now in session," my father's beta and Scarlett’s father, Antoine Suyo, announced among the council which comprises of the packs' delta, two of our lead warriors, a lead hunter, and the couple who supervises the omegas, and then there's me, who just got included due to being the alpha's daughter as we gathered in his office. "This session is to officially select a new Alpha as what we had agreed in the previous council meeting. Our alpha, Segfred Silva, can no longer fulfill his responsibilities as the pack’s leader due to his worsening mental health which we are all aware of. As his beta and closest friend, I can’t step up to the position and would rather guide the newly elected alpha,” he stated with a heavy sigh. I nodded at him, understanding his reason for he had five pups to take care of along with the fragile state Scarlett’s mom currently in, who had just recently birthed their youngest. “The procedures will be as what the Great Elders of Wolf Council stipulated that if an alpha can no longer lead the pack and is without an heir," he glanced and gave an aplologetic smile at me. I gave him a small nod as a response knowing that I cannot and wouldn't be considered as my father's heir, since I'm not his biological daughter. "A voting right will occur. There will be a selection of possible candidates and voting rights will be mandatory to the ones aged sixteen and older. With that being said, is there anyone who wants to volunteer or elect someone for the position of alpha?" he continued, addressing as all. "I, Max Whittler, nominated myself for the position of alpha," the guy seated next to me—who is one of the youngest to be a lead warrior—spoke as he stood, his muscular build radiating off confidence and looking down on me smirking, challenging me. My chair made a scraping sound against the marbled floor as I stood abruptly, "I, Maria Cove, nominated myself for the position of alpha," accepting his challenge. Oh, this is going to be a long night.
