The accident

1081 Words
The remainder of my shift went by smoothly. I finished my preclose tasks, hung up my apron and said goodbye to Cindi. As I walked by Callum, I said a quick goodbye to him too and heard him mutter one in response. Hopefully, today will be the start of a good friendship with him. I walked a few feet and stopped pulling out my phone to message my dad and let him know I was on my way home. I feel Unnerved. Like something bad is about to happen. As I'm about to start walking again, I hear some tire screeches and someone close scream. "LOOK OUT!" I looked over just in time to see a black truck slam into me, throwing me into the wall of a nearby building. For a moment, nothing happens. I feel numb. I had no time to react. I don't even really know what happened. I didn't see it coming. All of a sudden, I hear yelling in the distance. "CALL 911 NOW!" Then there's pain. So much pain. Everything hurts so badly. I'm scared. I don't want to die. I thought to myself. Someone approaches me and starts talking. “Emberlyn! Emberlyn! Stay with me!" He sounds scared." Don’t you dare close your eyes! Dammnit Emberlyn, you have to stay awake.” A man yells. I'm trying. It's so hard. It's the last thing I hear before loud sirens begin to drown out all other noises. Darkness takes over all of my senses. The world goes black and all noise suddenly ceases and I fall into the void… "Emberlyn?...." I heard a strangely familiar voice echo around me. It's a woman... but who? "Hello? Who are you? What happened to me?" I called out to her. "You have to go back and wake up Emberlyn. You arent supposed to awaken yet. We will meet soon." Her voice echoes. She sounds almost ethereal. I'm thrown back into the void. It's dark, quiet, and very lonely. I still don't know what happened. How is my dad? Does he know? I promised I'd be safe. Callum's POV I've been sitting in the cafe writing my paper all day. As Emberlyn goes to leave she says goodbye to me and I mutter bye back to her. I watched her leave and walk a few feet. She took out her phone. Probably texting someone. I heard Cindi gasp and some tires screech. I watch as a truck speeds towards Emberlyn. Almost like whoever driving it is trying to hit her. Cindi runs out the door and screams at Emberlyn. "LOOK OUT!" But its too late and we watch in horror as the truck collides with her, sending her flying into a nearby building unable to help her in time. The truck speeds off, leaving her there. We rushed over to her. "CALL 911 NOW!" I yelled to Cindi. She pulls out her phone, frantically describing the situation to the operator as I ran to Emberlyn's side. “Emberlyn! Emberlyn!" I called to her, trying to get her to focus. She's badly injured and barely breathing. "Stay with me!" I yelled as she started to drift off." Don’t you dare close your eyes! Dammnit Emberlyn, you have to stay awake.” I'm scared. Terrified that she might not make it. We wait with her, trying to keep her awake as the ambulance arrives along with a couple of cop cars. The police reluctantly let us ride with her to the hospital. They wanted to take us in for questioning but we couldn't leave her. After the ride to the hospital, a team took us aside to check for injuries. I had blood on me but not mine, hers. We were in shock. No one was giving us any information. "Hey kids!" A nurse at the desk called us over. "We need some basic information about the girl you came in-" "Emberlyn" I said, cutting her off. "Excuse me?" She asks, giving me a confused look. "That girl we came in with. Thats her name. Emberlyn" "Okay. Do you know a last name?" She asked. I don't know her last name. We didn't really talk before today. "I don't kn-" "Evans. Her full name is Emberlyn Evans. Her dad is Mike Evans. Her mom is out of the picture." Cindi said. "If you need, I can give you his number so you call him. I left my phone in my bag at work but I know it." She started rambling and breathing heavily. We were both still in shock. "Okay honey. I need you to sit down and take a deep breath for me." the nurse said, pulling a chair around to her. "You're having a panic attack. Its going to be okay. Your friend is in good hands now. She'll be okay. Do you think you could tell me that number or do you need a few minutes to calm down?" "I can give it to you now. Her dad needs to know." She told the nurse the number and the nurse called her dad. From the sounds of it he was very panicked. The last he had heard from her she said she was on her way home and should have been there already. I overheard him say he was on his way in a panicked voice. After about 15 minutes, Emberlyn's dad rushed into the waiting room frantically asking about her. "Sir, the doctors are still with her. She is in very bad condition and they are doing the best they can to make sure she survives this. Please take a seat. The two kids there came in with her. If you have any questions about what happened, they'll be the best to ask." The nurse told him, pointing in our direction. He looked over in our direction and recognized Cindi. "Cindi? What are you doing here?" he asked, seemingly surprised to see her here. "And who is this?" he asked, looking at me with accusing eyes. "Callum Rhodes, sir" I said, holding my hand out. "I go to school with Emberlyn. I was at the cafe when the accident happened. I witnessed the whole thing." he looked at my hand cautiously before gripping it in a firm handshake. "Nice to meet you kid. I'm Mike. Please explain what happened to my daughter. I need to know." He sat down between us and we told him everything that we saw. He looked exhausted and very concerned about her.
