The name slipped out before I could stop myself. My heart slammed against my ribs as I turned. He was standing just a few steps away, half his face swallowed by shadow, half illuminated by the torch in his hand. His wolf eyes glowed faintly gold.
“What are you doing here, Nova?” he asked, voice low, calm, almost lazy… the kind of calm that meant danger.
My mouth went dry. Think, Nova. Think fast.
“I—” My tongue tripped over itself. “I was sent here… by the Alpha.”
One of his brows lifted. “By the Alpha?”
“Yes,” I said quickly, forcing confidence into my tone. “He sent me to deliver food to Junie.”
