The healer’s wing was always noisy in its own quiet way: creaking floorboards, clinking vials, muttered curses from the boy who couldn’t tell peppermint from wolfsbane. But that morning? Not a sound. Until I heard the soft click of the door handle. I opened my eyes slowly, half-pretending to still be asleep, half-praying it wasn’t another nightmare. But the moment the scent of metal and cold air touched my nose, I knew it was real. Kai stepped in first. Black gear. Belt of knives. Sharp as always. Behind him were two guards I didn’t recognize. One short and broad. The other thin and twitchy. And then came another—a healer’s assistant I did recognize. He looked nervous. Good. H
