I stood behind Cardan’s chair the next morning, my hands folded neatly in front of me, eyes low, but every part of my mind sharp and alive. I had finally made it to his table. The great Alpha of the Northern Pack sat just inches in front of me, silent, unreadable, cold as stone.
He hadn’t said much since he arrived. Kai stood nearby as usual, his sharp eyes scanning the room like someone always expecting an attack.
I poured Cardan’s water with steady hands, careful not to shake, not to spill. His fingers brushed mine when he took the goblet. I looked up just a little, hoping for a glance, a flicker…something.
“Have we met before?” he asked again, low and calm, not loud enough for anyone else to hear.
“No, Alpha,” I replied, letting a soft smile
