"They're here," Halden said, arriving at the small hall at a near run, breathless in a way that told Sofia this wasn't routine before he said another word. "The Fells delegation. Three days early."
"Early," Zayn repeated, already moving toward the courtyard, Sofia falling into step beside him without needing to be asked. "Brenna said before the season turns. That gave us weeks."
"Apparently they changed their minds about the timeline," Halden said, keeping pace, his boots echoing against the stone corridor. "There's also something else, Your Majesty. They're not just here for the succession conversation anymore. Word from the borderlands reached them before it reached us properly. They know about the sister. They know about the Unbound. And from what the lead envoy said at the gate, they have opinions about both."
Sofia's stomach tightened. The letter she'd sent east hadn't even had time to arrive yet, and already the north was talking about the thing it was meant to gently open a door toward.
The courtyard, when they reached it, held considerably more than the modest delegation Sofia had expected from her first meeting with Brenna. A dozen Fells envoys, Brenna among them, but flanking her, additional figures in unfamiliar dress, dark robes marked with symbols Sofia didn't recognize, each one standing with the careful stillness of people representing something larger than themselves.
"Queen Sofia," Brenna said, inclining her head, formal now in a way she hadn't been during her first visit, when she'd knelt on the stone and called this a homecoming instead of a negotiation. "Forgive the early arrival. Circumstances accelerated our timeline." She gestured to the robed figures beside her. "These are representatives from three other sealed territories, not just the Fells. Word of your sister, and of the Unbound's beliefs about your bloodline, reached further than the borderlands. The other territories asked to be included in whatever conversation happens next. They felt, given the stakes, that a single pack's opinion wasn't sufficient anymore."
Sofia felt Zayn go very still beside her, the political weight of the moment landing on him first, faster than it landed on her, the strategist already calculating what a delegation this size actually meant.
"This isn't a trade discussion anymore," he said quietly, for her ears only.
"No, Your Majesty," Brenna said, close enough to hear him anyway. "It's closer to a referendum. On the vessel line itself. On whether the north wants to build its future around a power capable of what you displayed at the pass, no matter how carefully you claim to wield it." Her eyes moved to Sofia, not unkind, but weighted with the seriousness of what she was about to say. "The Unbound have sympathizers in every sealed territory now, Queen Sofia. Your sister's people reached further than you know, and faster than any of us expected. We're here to decide, together, whether the north stands behind you, or whether it stands with them."
The words settled over the courtyard like a physical weight. Sofia looked at the robed strangers, at Brenna's careful formality, at Zayn's tight jaw, and understood, in that single moment, that the war she thought had ended in the eastern pass had simply changed its shape entirely, moving from blades and covenants into something far harder to fight with either.
"How many people, exactly, are we discussing," Zayn asked, his voice carefully level. "When you say sympathizers."
"Enough that four of the sealed territories sent representatives instead of dismissing the letters that arrived," Brenna said. "Enough that the conversation happening in this courtyard tonight will be repeated in every one of those territories within the month, regardless of what's decided here. We're not the only voice deciding this, Your Majesty. We're simply the first to arrive."
Sofia stepped forward, past Zayn's shoulder, the way she'd learned to when a moment called for her to be the one speaking rather than the one being spoken about.
"Then let's not waste the fact that you got here first," she said. "You already know what I did in the pass. You know I freed four hundred people rather than command them. What you don't know is what the Unbound actually believe, and I'd rather you hear it accurately from someone who's read their own words than from rumor passed territory to territory until it's unrecognizable." She looked at Brenna directly. "Come inside. All of you. I'll tell you exactly what I know, including the parts that don't flatter me."
Brenna studied her for a long moment, something shifting behind her weathered eyes, the same recognition Sofia had seen the first time, mercy answered with something other than fear.
"That," Brenna said, "is not the response of someone hiding what she is."
"No," Sofia agreed. "It isn't."
They filed toward the great hall together, Fells envoys and robed strangers and the king and queen of a throne barely older than the war that had built it, and Sofia felt Zayn's hand find hers as they walked, steady, present, the same silent promise it had carried since the mountain.
Whatever this became, they would face it the way they'd faced everything else since the terrace.
Together.
