THE COMMONERS' TRUTH

CHAPTER 4: THE COMMONERS' TRUTH Neon lights flickered in the underground tech district as Sera walked by the bustling streets. The air was rife with the hum of machines and voices of people making do with what they had. It was so very unlike the sterile perfection of the palace: an advanced technology sector where gritty reality met the pretty side of things for someone who wasn't nobility. She walked up to the warehouse, very familiar from all the other rendezvous she had with Jax. It was an old factory remodeled into a place for tech repairs and black-market trading. Inside, he was waiting, his face illuminated by a big screen of schematics and lines of code. "About time," Jax smiled as Sera walked in. "You look like you've been through a war." "No kidding, kid." Sera offered a wry smile. "It is. There's stuff I've got to talk to you about on what comes next." Jax nodded, his expression growing serious. "That data chip you gave me? It's worse than we thought. The Neural Grid is going city-wide. The impact on the people will be massive. We need to act fast." No sooner had Sera begun to reply than a young woman burst through the door. Though practical, her clothes bore frayed edges from years of life on the grimy side of society. This was Rina, a member of the resistance and an experienced tech engineer. "Jax, I've been trying to reach you," Rina said breathlessly. "We've got reports of increased patrols and surveillance in the lower sectors. They're tightening their grip." "They must know something is up. Time's running out." Sera stepped forward toward the rest. "We need to get this information out to the public. The more people know what's coming, the likelier they are to stand against it." Rina shook her head. "Not that simple. The Neural Grid will control not only information but the thoughts of people as well. They will be more likely to yield if they do not even realize they are being controlled." "Then what do we do now?" and Sera's heart dropped. Jax turned steel into her eyes. "We need to make the truth known; we have sympathizers and tech experts who can help us communicate. We need to make sure people realize what is at stake before it's too late." Sera nodded. "Let's do it. What's the plan?" Rina began briefing them on the plan: "Use our underground channels to disseminate information on the Neural Grid. We'll air data on encryptions and hacked feeds, sending to as many people as we can before the rollout." Jax added, "We'll need to coordinate with the other cells of the resistance. This is going to be a huge operation. If we're caught, we face hangings and brutalizes." Sera's eyes set with will. "We can't let fear stop us. The people need to know the truth." While they refined their strategy, Sera couldn't help but take in the heaviness of her new role in the resistance. She was no longer merely a princess held captive in a palace by her responsibilities. Now she was involved in an uprising for liberty and equality. The next couple of days were a blur of movement. Sera, Jax, and Rina worked nonstop, trying to spread the information. They infiltrated all the public broadcasting stations, planting subliminal, encoded messages in the kiosks that performed the technology repairs and continued using the network of resistance cells to spread the word. It was all fraught with peril, but each of them moved forward only because the other refused to stop. One night, as Sera made her way to the palace through its secret ways, she discovered Dorian Vale, prince of the political alliance seeking negotiations, standing before her in a darkened hallway, his face grave. "Princess," Dorian said, crossing in front of her. "I've heard whispers of unrest and sabotage. What's going on?" Sera's heart beat fast. She had wanted to keep her actions a secret from the prince, and his involvement could mess up things. "Dorian, it's not what you think. We are trying to prevent something dangerous from happening." Dorian's eyes searched hers. "I know something's going on. My father has been pestering me for details. I want to help, but I need to know what I'm getting involved in." Sera hesitated then took a deep breath. "The Neural Grid is an elaborate system to control and survey every citizen. It is supposed to be for security, and still it is an implement of oppression. We are trying to reveal it before it's too late." Dorian's features softened with understanding. "Now I see. Should you be fine with this, I can support from my end. I have resources and contacts that could come in handy." Sera felt like she had just been handed a new lifeline. "Thank you, Dorian. Your help may spell the difference." Dorian merely nodded in understanding. "We need to be extra careful here, for if this leaks, it would endanger us all." Settled on their plan and with the full assurance of Dorian, Sera felt hopeful now. They had succeeded in spreading the truth and garnering allies, but that was where the real challenge started. In no time, the implementation of the Neural Grid would come, and they had to act fast to stop it. Sera left the palace for home, her responsibilities weighing heavier than ever before. The stakes were high, and every decision would influence the future of the kingdom. But really, after so long, she felt there was something that belonged to her, something meant for her, deeper than all the role of being queen. The fight was far from over, but with friends like Jax, Rina, and Dorian at her back, Sera was determined to make it to the end. The way forward may be fraught with rough spots, but she was ready to take them on.
