I rushed into the critical care wing where Lou was taking care of Scarlet, the girl from the White Fang Pack who sought asylum. As I was ushered into the CCU, I was met by Diane who I honestly found to be the most charming person. She and Louis were the same age, they would make a good pair. I thought to myself. “Miss Spencer, it’s been a while” Diane greeted “It’s just Steph Diane, no need for formalities” I replied, “You are to become our Luna, it is only right” she answered back “Word spreads fast huh?” I continued the conversation as I was gowned and gloved. Scarlet was isolated for multiple purposes. One is to keep her safe from any infection, and two is to keep her safe from the idiots that were beating her. The private CCU was safe enough that she could be closely monitored and feel safe. No one who comes in or out can say anything to anyone about who was in these rooms. “It does, but more so that this pack wants to know who the next Luna is. We are all lucky that it was you and not anyone else” Diane replied. Her tone had a hint of contempt when she said someone else.
I can recall that there was someone else that Andre dated but I knew it wasn’t serious though. They were always together but when they weren’t she ended up flirting with half the pack with a high status. It irked me that she pretended to be friends with me, saying things that were absolutely meant to threaten me. I was never bothered by her. Now I know the reason why. But I always felt that she was up to something all the time. Thank the goddess she was mated to white fang though. Hmm. now that I thought of it, could it be? Not today.
As I entered, I saw her, she had a nasal cannula for oxygen administration, at a 3L flow. She was unconscious. Monitors indicate she was still in pain but the pain relievers that are hooked to her were helping. Her wolf was there to help, but still. Under the circumstances she was in, the pain would be unbearable that modern medicine could not help. She had antibiotics hooked via IV therapies; she had scars caused by skin tests to find reactions to medications. She had scars caused by the blood drawing for other diagnostic tests. She had a urinary catheter on. How bad was her condition? I’m not as medical savvy as my brother, but I do know my way around the hospital and their equipment. I should know since I volunteer from time to time as well. She was conscious but she was still tired. She finally had time to rest.
“Lou.” I called my brother who was keeping an eye for any changes in her vital signs. “Hey, good you’re here. Come” he answered, gesturing to me to come closer. “Hey Scarlet, how are you doing? You asked to see me?” I asked. “She can’t speak yet but…” Louis replied. I immediately understood what he meant. She was currently inaudible but there was another way we could communicate. I created a temporary link just like Louis did earlier. Though he never said a thing, I know what he did. Once the link was created, she was as audible as it would be if she was fully conscious.
We were surrounded by pine trees in a field of lavenders and daffodils. I saw her waiting in the middle of the field in a blue dress. “Scarlet?” I called and she looked in my direction “Luna?” She asked “Not yet, I’m not yet married, and my mate is yet to be alpha. But I have been given permission to grant you asylum.” I explained. “I was told you were the true luna” She answered confused “I don’t know where you got that, but rest assured you are safe within the pack” I replied. Though the last comment did pique my curiosity. “What is it you wished to see me for?” I asked her. She just looked at me and I understood. “My brother explained what he could to correct you?” I asked “Yes, he told me my child was safe, both of us are safe, but…” she replied. “White Fang and their new alpha alexander cannot harm you here. They will face the wrath of the entire council if they touch hair on me or my brother or this pack. The crescent moon has allies everywhere scarlet. Even your mother’s pack Scarlet if you so wish.” I replied, assuring her that she was safe. “My mother’s old pack?” she asked, “You don’t know your mother was not a part of white fang?” I asked. “No, nobody has ever told me of my mother’s past. To white fang, one’s past even their old pack is not one that should be remembered. That’s one of the many reasons for the isolation. “You have the blood of a Nightwind beta Scarlet, your mother is the sister of the pack’s current beta. I hear he was not made aware of his sister’s death.” I explained. “It is not my place to tell them, but considering isolation is part of the pack's entire system, then I fear that the moment Nightwind finds out about their death, White Fang would be further isolated.” I continued.
She looked at me and with that I wondered what she was thinking at that point in time. Then she spoke. “Will she find me?” she asked, “Who will find you scarlet?” I wondered who she was talking about. “Sandra… Sandra Banks” she replied simply. I froze as I heard the name. She was never part of the Crescent Moon pack, she was born and raised by Nightshades pack but because Nightshade allied with the pack, she was granted a temporary residence within university gates for her education. The residence ended when she found her made. I thought she found her mate. How in the name of the seven moons did this happen? “Why do you seem confused, Luna?” she asked. “You are Alpha Alexander’s mate, right?” I asked her “Yes Luna” and she replied, “So what about Sandra?” I asked, “She was Beta's mate, my cousin,” she replied. “Then how did Sandra end up becoming the chosen mate, when her mate was so close by?” I asked. “I… I don’t know what happened, "Scarlet replied.
What was going on in that pack? Why was there no beta with Alexander. I was becoming even more curious as to what was going on. I went on to ask her about everything that she could tell me.
“Sandra and Alexander went to school together with my cousin Drake.” She started to explain “they went here?” I asked before she could continue “Yes Luna, they went to this university, but since they were a year younger than Andre Lancaster, the pack's next alpha, they would not have met, nor would Alexander care. He was arrogant, he always was. I never wanted to be mated to him. In his mind, I was always lucky that they kept me, and I had to be grateful that they kept me.” The heartbreak in her eyes was so visible it hurt me as she explained. “My family sacrificed their lives, their time to be with me for the pack to have its next alpha, instead of gratitude all I get is the need to be grateful that I was not banished. Even my cousin was not as welcoming towards me. He was always indifferent. He was the son of my father’s brother. After my uncle he was next in line. After my father’s passing my uncle took over the role of beta for Alpha Matthew. When Alpha Matthew decided to pass down the leadership to his son, my uncle stepped down as well. I was a female; I was not allowed to be alpha. That’s how it was in White Fang.” She continued. “I wanted to get away, but when I came of age, I found out who my mate was and attempted to run away. I did not want to be associated with him in any way than what already was. But I got caught and was placed on the southernmost part of the pack borders with a group of warriors guarding. During a rogue attack I snuck out while the warriors were called to defend the borders. I used the old tunnels to escape outside pack grounds and lead me to the direction of the crescent moon.” She finished.
“What about Sandra?” I asked “I suppose she wanted more than to become the beta’s mate” She replied. That answer sent chills down my spine. How low can one go for power? “She will not find you Scarlet, I assure you. Her residency ended as soon as she found her mate. Her contract with the pack grounds has ended. Without her mate by her side, her true mate, she cannot enter the premises” I explained. “I will have warriors here to guard you in case the borders are breached.” I continued “I will let you rest Scarlet. Your mind and heart need time to rest.” I ended and bid goodbye. She nodded her head and as I broke the temporary link, I got back to seeing the hospital room.
“How did it go?” Louis asked “It just made me want to punch those idiots more. But I do not want to be the i***t that starts a war you know.” I replied with a chuckle. “I have to show you something,” Louis said, gesturing to me outside Scarlet’s room. As we went outside, he took out his phone and Scarlet’s chart “what’s up?” I asked. “Have a look” he merely said pointing to the images he took on his phone and the reports on the chart. “Battered to the point that she had unhealable bruises. It will take a while to heal them. It will take months to heal, even with tempest it will be hard. She has burns on her thighs, and none are self-inflicted. These burns are not in places where no human or wolf can reach. Someone must do it. Cuts, all over, apart from the cuts on her feet which were caused by her escape, this one is the most inhuman one.” He explained pointing at the image of the cuts on her back, running from her lower neck to the back of her shoulder. It was like each day it was cut with no time to heal. Who on earth would do such a thing?
“How on earth is that child inside her still alive?” I was worried about the state of the child. “Tempest” Louis simply answered. It broke my heart even more that they both had to go through all these inhuman acts. “She cannot go back. I forbid it Steph, unlike me, you have the power to decide what to do.” Louis urges me. “I can’t decide for her, but I can advocate for her, Lou. Until she regains consciousness and decides that she wishes to go back to her maternal family’s pack or stay with us, I can only grant her so much. That decision is still reserved to the Alpha of the pack” I replied. I did understand what he meant. “I’m heading back to the packhouse, I have to relay my decision.” I replied. Louis nodded.
As I walked out, I thought of what I should do or how I should tell Andre about Sandra, and the possibility of a mass corruption within a pack. White Fang was the top candidate for this theory. The influence that Sandra has on White Fang and the temper of their current alpha. I just shudder at the thought.
