Adija's Pov
I could have sworn I died. I knew for a fact that I did, but what puzzled me was how I still remained standing in front of him. The way my heart dropped to my feet at that moment scared me more than I could express. It felt like my heart stopped beating, and my soul slowly slipped away. I stared at him, my eyes wide with shock, scrambling for something, anything, to say. I should lie, right? That seemed like the only solution to the mess in front of me.
Alpha Zarek’s cold gaze bore into me, waiting for my answer. But I had none. After what felt like an eternity of silence, I stammered, “I…I…I walked past him…I don’t…”
“Don’t lie to me…” he interrupted, his voice sharp. My mind raced, my heart pounding furiously in my chest as I struggled to make sense of the situation. I wanted to faint, but I forced myself to stay upright. Damn you, Lycan Remus. Life would be easier without you here. I couldn’t find any other words as Alpha Zarek continued to stare at me. The silence dragged on until he finally smiled—a smile that, for some reason, sent a chill down my spine. Then, without another word, he turned and walked away.
He knew. Without a doubt, he knew. But why wasn’t he killing me right there and then? What was he planning to do to me later? I was terrified, my knees almost giving out, but I forced myself to stay standing, swallowing hard. I had ruined my own life, and now I had no choice but to face whatever consequences were coming.
Days went by, and I heard nothing from Alpha Zarek, Veronica, or most of all, Lycan Remus. Everywhere was uncomfortably quiet. The Alpha no longer summoned me to his chambers, and his brother no longer cared to call me either. It was a relief, but it still felt like danger was lurking just around the corner. It was as if they were going to harm me at any moment. I tried to push those thoughts aside, deciding that enjoying the peace I had was the better option.
“Explain properly to me, who is this man that arrived and what has he come to do here?” I asked Zora. I had been hearing rumors about the arrival of someone powerful at the castle, and that was why Alpha Zarek had been so unavailable. At first, I didn’t care about the matter, but after a while, my curiosity got the better of me. I had no choice but to inquire about the affairs of the castle.
“I feel as if I shouldn’t speak of other people’s personal matters,” Zora hesitated, pausing as she gently brushed my hair. We were having this conversation on that fateful afternoon. “Let me start from the beginning of the story. Rumor has it that Alpha Zarek is supposed to marry Mistress Veronica, but because he doesn’t believe in marriage, he made her his top mistress instead.”
“His top mistress?”
“Yes…”
“But is he in love with her? I don’t think I understand, Zora. Why make her his mistress and not his wife?”
“Apparently, Alpha Zarek made a pact with a powerful man to keep the Eastern region in check. The most powerful creatures—the dragons—constantly raided and wreaked havoc on the Eastern regions. So, as Alpha, he made a pact with someone powerful enough to help him, and all he had to do was marry the man’s daughter,” she explained.
“So, he couldn’t marry her, and instead made her a mistress? Why would Veronica agree to that?”
"That I know nothing of," Zora confessed, taking a deep breath. "But you must have heard of her father at some point. He is a powerful man called Alpha Dreadfang of the Waterfall."
The moment she said that name, I froze. Alpha Darkfang? Veronica’s father is Alpha Darkfang? My heart sank as the realization hit me hard. I had somehow made an enemy of the daughter of the Alpha Darkfang—the most notorious warlord and Alpha feared across countless kingdoms. His name alone was enough to make grown men tremble, and mothers used his legend to frighten their children in terrifying bedtime tales. He was more beast than man, a ruthless conqueror who left nothing but blood and ashes in his wake. They say he led armies of feral wolves that slaughtered entire villages in a single night, leaving nothing behind but scorched earth and the remains of those who dared to go against him
What could such a man be doing here, and why would he agree to let his daughter be Zarek’s mistress rather than his wife?
As I battled with the thought of just how deep the trouble I was in had become, the door creaked open. A maid stepped in, bowing slightly before delivering a message that made my heart stop.
"Alpha Darkfang has requested your presence in his chambers…”
