A sharp pain in my head pulled me back to reality. I glared at my sister as she pranced down the stairs towards us. Clearly she’d grown tired of waiting for me to arrive and decided to let me know by attacking me telepathically. An ability we’d discovered in our tween years, we could in a sense give each other a mental slap.
‘I thought we agreed to use our words?’ I asked.
‘I don’t remember agreeing to that,’ Annette snapped back.
‘You didn’t have to hit me, Annie.’
‘And you didn’t have to take hours to get back here, Nettie.’ she retorted.
‘We were…. busy,’ I shot back.
Annie stopped dead in her tracks and a knowing smile spread across her face. Her cobalt and green heterochromia eyes filled with mischief. I groaned internally as my sister closed the distance between us in several large steps, her bare painted feet kicking up dust with each step. She gave Casey a sidelong glance before smacking his hand as hard as she could. My future mate yelped and snatched his hand away feigning injury.
“What was that for?” he asked half laughing.
“You know why,” she said as seriously as she could as she dragged me away.
“I’ll let you take her for now, just make sure I get her back for the ceremony tonight,” Casey called over his shoulder as he walked away.
“Yeah yeah, you’ll get her back lover boy don’t worry,” she teased.
Annie continued to drag me as we walked through the pack house. I greeted Beta Markus and his mate as well as a number of other high ranking warriors who also resided in the pack house. Our suite was on the first floor near the laundry room. It was the spot we had chosen that was furthest away from the other pack members. My sister flung me in the room and slammed the door behind us. I stumbled before I managed to catch myself but still wound up toppling to the floor and staring at Annie’s excited face. Annie and I were twins in every sense of the word. We both had the same copper skin, long white coiled hair, button nose, and square jaws. Our differences began with our lips, my lips were plump and full while hers were more pouty. Whereas my skin was clear, hers was covered in brown freckles from head to toe. But our telltale difference was our eyes. My eyes were hazel, but shifted between light green or light brown depending on how the light hit them. Annie had heterochromia. Her left eye was always a bright cobalt blue, while her right eye shifted from a variety of colors depending on her mood. Since she had a rather easygoing spirit, her left for the most part was a light green, but piss her off and her iris would take an orange-brown tone. Make her happy and it turned a soft violet. If her mood was simply because of me, it was a flat brown. Her eyes basically gave her away.
“Ok, tell me everything. I have to know,” she squealed excitedly.
“I can tell you or…. I can show you,” I offered and her eyes lit up.
She urged me to go forward with the latter. I smiled and sent the memories her way, from the moment Casey sat down next me up until we walked back to town. She squealed again, irritating my sensitive ears. I was sure the other pack members could hear her high pitched sounds of joy. Sharing memories was something my sister and I did quite often, especially when we were pups. Oftentimes it was too hard to put things into words, so we would give each other access to each other's memories. This was something only she and I could do together. I could send my memories out at will, but if I wanted access to anyone else’s memories I needed Annette’s help.
I discovered this when I’d tried it once with Casey when we were younger. He was trying to explain a place he’d been as a pup before we joined the pack, but was having trouble describing it. I’d asked him to let me see it instead. When Annette and I shared memories it was similar to us mind linking, only I could see the images in the form of a movie. With Casey, I could only hear his voice like a regular telepathic conversation. When I explained it to Annette, she tried it as well and failed. Casey had the bright idea for us to try it together, so we did. The result was incredible, it was like Annette opened the door to his mind and held it open so I could enter. Instead of Casey’s memories entering my mind, my entire consciousness entered his. It was like looking through a mildly disorganized telly series. I floated through his memory bank in complete awe. I asked him again to show me the memory and it instantly popped up. I watched it as though it were a short film.
Afterwards, we went to Alpha Kingsley and told him everything. Fascinated, he asked if we could show him and we did. That was one of the first instances when Annette and I realized we truly needed each other in order to bring out our Alpha and Beta abilities. There had to be more that we could do and we knew just where to start. The Evermoon’s had an extensive history collection of ancient scrolls and old books that we scoured for information about Alpha and Beta female powers. When we could find no further information, we asked Alpha Kingsley to reach out to the other packs. He did and soon after, little by little, emails were coming in with copies of the other packs' historical texts. According to the texts, throughout history Alpha females always had a Beta female at their side who enhanced their abilities. As it turned out there had never been a sibling pair of Alpha and Beta females. If all other historical texts held the same context, we were indeed the first and only. So when Alpha Kingsley, knowing this information, decided to send Annette away it pissed me off. I looked into my sister’s eyes and accepted our fate. We had done all we could to stay together, but now it was time for our paths to split. Annie’s eyes grew far away and I touched her shoulder to bring her back.
“Can you show me mom and dad?” she sniffled.
“Of course I can. You know you could see them any time you wanted if you kept the memories,” I replied.
“I know, I’m just terrified that my memories will fade.
