We Were Nomads Part 1

My body was sore and my lady parts ached, but in the most satisfying of ways. Before putting my knickers and sundress back on, I stepped into the brook to rinse away the bloody evidence that my virginity was no more. The stones beneath my bare feet were smooth but the water was freezing cold. Casey got a kick out of my stifled gasps as I brought the cold water to the sensitive skin of my upper thighs. His laughter, however, ceased as I directed his attention to his crotch where some of the evidence was screaming hello. I laughed loudly as he trudged his way into the cold water splashing me as he went.  A brief water fight ensued as I refused to stop laughing at his high pitched shrieks. Another anxious mind link from Annette followed by Alpha Kingsley’s notification that the Theurge pack would be in our territory within the hour, forced us to cut our game short. We helped each other rinse off and put our clothes back on. Leaving the meadow, we walked hand in hand back to the pack house. Holding hands was something we’d done quite often, but for some reason it felt different this time. It was like if anyone saw us holding hands they would know what we’d done out in the meadow. The few people we passed by waved enthusiastically at us, aware of the impending ceremony but unaware of our spicy meadow encounter.  A small number of houses were near the meadow, but the number steadily increased as we made our way to the town center. We passed city hall and made our way down main street, just enjoying each other's company. Even though we’d been with the Evermoon pack for twelve years, I still couldn’t get used to the fact that we no longer moved around every couple of weeks. As we neared the pack house I spotted some pups playing close by the stairs. There were only five steps that led up to the massive double doors, but the little ones were having the time of their lives chasing a couple of slinkies up and down.  I recalled how a six year old version of Annette and I had once sat on those same stairs, all packed up and ready to go. We’d been with the Evermoon’s for three weeks at the time and as we’d approached our fourth week with them, we fell into our normal pack routine. We usually waited a month after each solstice before traveling once more. Over the course of a few days, in preparation for our travels, we’d each picked a pillowcase and packed up our clothes, sheets, and the food we’d stored in the room we’d been given.  The sky was still dark as we’d settled on the front stairs waiting for the rest of the pack to gather so we could leave. We’d waited for hours, but nobody came. It wasn’t until the sky started to lighten that Annette had started to panic, but I assured her that we nor the Evermoon wolves were in any danger. I knew what the veratus smelled like and I also knew that my instincts would recognize their presence before my nose did. That, in fact, I could sense many mind links taking place around us. Not wanting to intrude on every conversation I could sense, I’d picked out the one that had the strongest sense of authority. It was coming from within the pack house. It belonged to Beta Markus Hendricks.  At the time no one knew who we really were, only that our pack was killed by the veratus and we were all that remained. To the Evermoon pack were just two normal orphaned pups that they’d saved from death or becoming rogues. If I’d tapped into his conversation I would’ve had to explain everything and I wasn’t ready for that. Instead I’d grabbed Annette’s hand and led her back inside to what I assumed was his bedroom door.  Knocking as hard as my little fist would allow, I backed up when I heard a scuffling noise on the other side of the door. The door opened and a pair of green eyes were looking down at us. I’d always found Beta Markus to be a rather good looking man even in my youth. His green eyes were flecked with yellow and they were almond shaped and ever alert to his surroundings. Seeing a shirt in his hand, let me know that we’d caught him dressing. His arms, chest, abs were well defined under his coffee colored skin. A quizzical expression crossed his handsome face as he stared at us. “Is there something I can help you pups with?” Beta Markus had asked in a gentle voice. “We’re ready to go now, but it seems it’s too soon. Does your pack not travel just before first light?” I’d asked. “Where is it that you think we’re going this…. Wait a minute, did you say travel? I’m not quite sure what you mean little one,” he’d said, confusion clear on his face. “You know, travel? Going from one territory to another. Nettie what did elder Alba call it again?” my sister asked me. “Nomads. We are nomadic. Are you not nomads?” I asked.
