That line, when spoken from the mouth of the child he just wished his own, struck Lucas's heart and brought it a great amount of of ache.
As a part of his daydreaming, he would not have done the same thing Cornelius's father did to him. He would not have left before the kid was even conscious enough to recognize his face and voice. He would have stayed with Emily through thick and thin and raised Cornelius to be the best man he could ever be.
Too bad, it was not him. Too bad, he could not have done that in his stead in the past, too. He had added it to some of his regrets; not being able to meet Cornelius earlier and showering him with the affection and attention he deserved to receive from his biological father
