23 - 23 - When her monitoring screen buzzed, Aleph checked the Eye feed, saw Genna approach. She tapped to open the door, but carried on working. “Hey,” she said when Genna stepped into the room, when the data on the screen told her the door was now secure. “Thought you’d be busy.” And only then did she turn to face Genna. There had been a time when Aleph knew every part of Genna’s face—the soft skin, the small scar at the base of her neck, the tiny patch where hair no longer grew through another scar, the tooth to the left of her jaw that had been pushed out of line, the way her eyes would develop thin red veins whenever she was tired. But she didn’t know these new lines that crossed her forehead and radiated from her eyes, or the heavy skin above her cheeks. She’d lost colour too,
