Chapter 7: The Moon Answered Me

1416 Words
I didn’t stop running until my lungs burned and my legs gave out. When I finally collapsed, it was beside a river I didn’t recognize—its water glowing faintly under the moonlight, silver ripples reflecting a sky that felt far too close. I curled into myself, shaking. The forest was silent again. But this time, it wasn’t wrong. It was watching. I pressed my palm to the ground, trying to steady my breathing, when a surge of heat rushed through my body so violently I cried out. Pain lanced up my spine, sharp and blinding, forcing me onto my hands and knees. Something inside me moved. Not the bond. Something deeper. I screamed as power tore through my veins, my senses snapping open like a door ripped from its hinges. The night exploded into clarity—every insect, every heartbeat, every whisper of wind against leaves became overwhelming. I wasn’t alone. The forest knew me. I clutched my chest as the realization slammed into me. The power wasn’t hunting me. It was responding. “No,” I whispered. “I didn’t ask for this.” The moonlight intensified, bathing the riverbank in silver fire. My shadow stretched unnaturally long, twisting, reshaping. A wolf’s silhouette stared back at me. Not Kael’s. Mine. My breath hitched as memories I had never lived surfaced like broken glass. A woman standing between two warring packs. A crown formed of moonlight, not gold. Wolves bowing—not in fear, but in trust. I staggered to my feet, heart pounding. “This isn’t real,” I whispered. The river rippled violently. Then— A voice. Not spoken aloud. Child of balance. I froze. “Who’s there?” I demanded, fear and anger tangling in my chest. The moon flared brighter. You run from what you are. “I never chose this life,” I snapped. “I never chose him. I never chose power.” Silence fell heavy and absolute. Then— Power chose you. The ground trembled beneath my feet as silver light erupted around me, wrapping my body in warmth that burned without pain. I cried out as the last remnants of something fragile inside me shattered. Human fear. Human limits. Human denial. I dropped to my knees as understanding flooded my mind. I wasn’t becoming a Luna. I had always been one. The realization didn’t bring relief. It brought weight. My body trembled as the truth pressed down on me—not like a crown placed gently on my head, but like a sky collapsing onto my shoulders. All this time, I thought I was being dragged into Kael’s world. But the truth was far more terrifying. That world had been built for me. I wrapped my arms around myself as fragments of knowledge settled into place—things I had never been taught, instincts I had never learned, yet somehow knew. Lunas weren’t meant to stand behind Alphas. They were meant to anchor them. Balance rage. Temper violence. Decide when mercy mattered more than power. And when that balance was threatened— The world corrected itself. My chest tightened painfully. “That’s why they erased you,” I whispered, understanding blooming with horror. “You weren’t weak. You were inconvenient.” The air hummed softly, neither denying nor confirming. I staggered toward the river, staring at my reflection as moonlight danced across the water. For a moment, I didn’t recognize the woman staring back. Her eyes glowed faint silver. Her spine was straighter. Her fear… quieter. I touched my face with trembling fingers. “Who am I now?” I asked the reflection. The answer came not as words, but as certainty. Someone who could no longer pretend to be small. The bond stirred again—gentler this time. Kael didn’t pull. Didn’t command. He waited. That realization struck deeper than his rejection ever had. For the first time, the bond felt… equal. Not possession. Not dominance. A line stretched between two forces that could either destroy each other—or reshape the world together. I exhaled slowly, forcing myself to ground the power surging beneath my skin. Every instinct screamed to release it, to let the night bend and bow completely. But power without control had destroyed Lunas before me. I wouldn’t repeat their mistakes. “I won’t rule through fear,” I whispered. “And I won’t disappear.” The moonlight softened again, responding—not approving, but acknowledging. Something ancient shifted. Then— Pain. Not physical. Memory. A flood of voices crashed into my mind—echoes of Lunas long gone, their emotions lingering like imprints on my soul. Hope. Betrayal. Love. Death. I gasped, collapsing to my knees as grief unlike my own tore through me. They had loved their packs. Trusted their Alphas. Believed balance would protect them. It hadn’t. My hands clenched into the dirt. “I hear you,” I whispered fiercely. “And I won’t let it happen again.” The echoes quieted—not gone, but listening. For the first time, I felt truly alone… and yet deeply surrounded. The night shifted again—subtler this time. Movement. I lifted my head sharply, instincts flaring as unfamiliar presences crept along the edges of my awareness. Not Kael. Not wolves. Cold intent brushed against my senses. Metal. Silver. My stomach twisted. Hunters. They weren’t close yet—but they were tracking. Testing. Waiting for weakness. I stood slowly, spine straightening as resolve settled heavy and unyielding in my chest. “They think I’m prey,” I murmured. The power within me answered, coiling tighter—not wild, not destructive, but terrifyingly calm. “No,” I corrected softly. “They’re wrong.” I stepped away from the riverbank, moonlight clinging to my skin like armor rather than illumination. If they came for me— They would learn what the world had forgotten. A Luna was not a prize. She was a reckoning. The bond with Kael didn’t create my power. It unlocked it. Tears streamed down my face as grief crashed in—grief for the life I could never return to, for the girl who believed she was ordinary. “I’m scared,” I whispered. The forest answered. Not with comfort— With acceptance. I inhaled sharply as the night bent toward me, instinctively recognizing authority it had not felt in generations. A branch snapped nearby. I spun, power surging defensively. A wolf stepped into view—large, scarred, his eyes wary rather than hostile. He lowered his head slowly, deliberately. Submission. Not forced. Chosen. My heart stuttered. “I won’t hurt you,” I said softly. The wolf lifted his head, ears flicking, sensing truth rather than command. Another wolf emerged behind him. Then another. Rogues. Not pack-bound. Broken. Lost. They circled cautiously, watching me like I was something both sacred and dangerous. I felt it then—the thread connecting us. Not ownership. Responsibility. “Go,” I told them gently. “You don’t have to follow me.” None of them moved. Instead, they sat. Waited. I swallowed hard, realizing the truth settling deep into my bones. Leadership wasn’t dominance. It was choice. I closed my eyes, reaching inward instead of outward, grounding the power instead of unleashing it. The silver glow softened, wrapping me like armor rather than fire. For the first time since the Blood Moon— The bond eased. Kael was still there. Steady. Watching. But he didn’t pull. Didn’t command. Didn’t chase. And that… changed everything. I opened my eyes just as a sharp pain ripped through my temple. Images flooded my mind. Torches. Chains. A throne room soaked in blood. A woman screaming as elders condemned her. My breath came in short gasps. “They killed you,” I whispered, understanding dawning. The last Luna. Erased because she refused to submit. Rage unlike anything I had ever felt coiled inside me—not wild, not reckless, but cold and devastatingly clear. “I won’t end like you,” I vowed. The moon dimmed slightly, as if listening. Then the night shifted. Fear slammed into my chest as something dark brushed the edge of my awareness. Hunters. Not wolves. Men. Weapons laced with silver. I straightened slowly, heart steadying as power settled obediently beneath my skin. “I’m done running,” I said quietly. The rogues rose behind me, silent and ready. Somewhere far away, I felt Kael tense. I lifted my chin, eyes burning silver. “Let them come.”
