CHAPTER TWO He withdrew from the room as she closed her eyes, indicating, he thought, that she did not want any further conversation. He walked down the long hallway to the stairs, went down them to the first floor hall and to the door of the front room. It stood open, so he entered, after clearing his throat to announce his presence. There was no need for this, as it turned out. The room had no occupants.
