THE SECRET AND THE STORM

--- Chapter Three: The Secret and the Storm The wind that night carried rain and whispers. Ada sat on the edge of her bed, fingers twisting her wrapper. Something had been wrong for days — the kind of wrong that pressed against her chest and refused to let go. Her daughter, Chika, had grown pale and withdrawn. She barely spoke, barely ate. When Ada asked, “Are you sick?” the girl would shake her head, eyes full of something that looked like fear. --- One afternoon, the truth arrived — not in a shout, but in silence. The nurse at the local clinic called Ada aside. Her voice was calm, too calm. > “Madam, your daughter... she’s with child.” The words fell heavy, like stones. Ada blinked once, twice. “That can’t be. She’s still—” Her voice cracked. The nurse only looked at her with quiet pity. --- At home, Ada’s world began to tilt. She called Chika into her room, her hands shaking. “Who did this to you?” she whispered. The girl stared at the floor, tears running freely. And in that moment, Ada didn’t need to hear the name. She already knew. The air left her lungs. Shame, rage, denial—all at once. Her mind screamed to act, to protect, to run—but her heart clung to the fragile peace she had built. > “No one must know,” she said finally, her voice trembling. “Please, my child… we’ll fix this quietly.” Chika’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Mama… you believe him more than me?” Ada turned away, unable to meet her gaze. --- Days passed. The house became colder, quieter. The younger children avoided their mother. Patrick moved through the rooms like a shadow. And Ada prayed — not for forgiveness, but for forgetfulness. But secrets don’t stay buried forever. One night, Emeka — her first husband — appeared at her door, rain-soaked and furious. Someone had told him. His voice shook with grief. > “Ada… what have you done to our children?” Ada could not answer. For the first time in her life, she felt truly alone. --- End of Chapter Three
