The full moon cast long shadows off in the distant trees.
“All well?” asked Charlaine.
“No sign of trouble,” Danica replied, “if that’s what you mean.”
“Stay alert, regardless. You never know when the enemy might strike.” Charlaine climbed down from the gate, making her way to the chapter house where Aurelia and Teresa sat in readiness.
On Giselle’s orders, all sisters were to be armed and armoured while on duty. It was challenging to stand watch for so long in full plate armour, so they had settled on rotating the sentry positions several times during the shift. To help with this, they were equipped with an hourglass. With two on the gate, the rest would remain in the hall, watching the sand pour, ready to respond if needed.
