The rainy night

1038 Words
As Mr. Dum drives Xander home from work as usual, the sky suddenly turns gray, and a few drops of rain fell. Mr. Dum clicks his tongue in annoyance. "Looks like we're in for a bit of weather," he says, peering up at the sky. The rain falls relentlessly, pelting down in sheets that blurred the streets beyond the windshield. Xander leans forward in the back seat, squinting to see through the downpour. The same route he took every day from his office to his apartment, but the rain made it feel like a different world entirely. The windshield wipers beat back and forth in a steady rhythm, but it seemed like they could barely keep up with the deluge. The street outside was a blur of gray, and the rain seemed to have erased all sound except for the drumming on the roof of the car. He yawns and rubs his eyes, wishing he could just close them for a minute as he was tired after a long day at work, but he knows he has to stay alert. The roads were slick with rain, and other drivers were moving cautiously, trying to avoid skidding on the slick asphalt. As they approach his apartment building, Xander feels a sense of relief. "Goodnight sir." Mr Dum mutters. "Goodnight too. See you tomorrow." But when he reaches for the door handle, he hesitates, seeing how serious. The rain keeps coming down hard, and he didn't have an umbrella in the car. He glances back at his briefcase and the other things he has to carry. Immediately, he gulps down an invisible lump in his throat and sighs, seeing that has no choice other than to use his precious, adorable briefcase as an umbrella over his head. Finally, he takes a deep breath and opens the rare door space. The rain hit him like a wall, drenching him instantly. He hunches his shoulders, hurrying towards the entrance of the building. "Huh! Finally!" Xander exclaims, shivering as the rain had soaked through his clothes, leaving him feeling cold and clammy. Reaching his apartment, he fumbles with his keys, struggling to get the door open. When he finally did, he stumbles inside, dropping his briefcase on the side table in the living room. He can't help but think about how good a warm bath would feel. He peels off his drenched pants, starting from his tie to his tuxedo suite, leaving a trail of wet clothes behind him as he makes his way to the bathroom. He sighs in relief as he steps into the shower. He closes his eyes and leaned his head back, feeling the warmth seep into his bones. As he showers, Xander thought about the rain. It had been an inconvenience, sure, but it had also been beautiful in its own way. The way it had transformed the city, turning the streets into a glistening canvas of light and shadow. And the sound of it, drumming against the pavement and tapping against the roof of the car. The moment he finishes his shower and dries himself off, feeling more relaxed than he had in days. He puts on a more comfortable night suite and heads to the kitchen, where he makes himself a cup of tea. "Hmmm." He sips it slowly, savoring the warmth and the taste. "I really needed this." Just as Xander settles into his armchair, he hears a ping from his phone. He picks it up and sees that it's a message from Susan. "Can't sleep?" it read. Immediately, his tired looking face lits up with a smile, feeling a warm glow in his chest. Xander replies quickly, "Nope, just got in from work. The rain was insane!" Susan: I know, right? I was caught in it too. But I love the rain, don't you? Xander smiles, loving her sense of humor already. "Yeah, it's nice to see the city in a different light. But it's also a pain when you forget your umbrella." Susan: Haha, I know that feeling. It's doesn't end funny at all. Xander: So, do you mind for a voice call? Because I'm already getting tired of typing. Susan: same here, but didn't just know how best to say it. Immediately, Xander switches to voice call. She picks on seeing his call request. "Mm-hmm." Susan clears her throat. "So tell me, Mr. Xander, are you seeing anyone special?" She asks bluntly. Xander takes a deep breath, feeling nervous. He has never really dated anyone before, and the question catches him off guard. "Uh, no, I'm not seeing anyone special. Just work." He replies, trying to sound casual. "Wow... It's really rare to see a young, handsome man, single in this part of our world." "Really? I had no idea." Xander giggles. Susan laughs lightly. "Well, now you obviously do. But don't worry about it. There's nothing wrong with being single. Sometimes it's better to wait for the right person to come along." "Yeah, I guess you're right. I just haven't found anyone who I really connect with yet." Xander feels relieved at her response. "It's not easy to find someone who really understands you. But when you do, it's worth the wait." "Thanks for understanding. So, what about you?" Xander smiles as he sips his already cold tea. "Because I'm sure that your man will definitely be proud of the woman you are." Suddenly, Susan goes silent for a while. Xander hears nothing, except for that of her breathes, she exhales and inhales. "Are you still there?" He asks. "Sorry, my mistake. I shouldn't have asked that." "No... It's fine." Susan chuckles. "I'm not seeing anyone at the moment, either. I'm still looking for my Mr. Right, too." "Really? That's surprising. You seem like someone who would have a line of suitors if not obviously dating." Susan laughs. "Well, I don't know about that. But what I do know is, I'm focusing on my career. I guess we're both married to our work, huh?" "Workaholics!" They both howl out, laughing. "Haha, I guess so. But it would be nice to find that special someone to share the rainy nights with. Don't you think so?" Susan cuts in with a calm tone.
