“Now my sweet Clementine, when this horrible storm gets done, I want you to march up to your room and go to sleep, but after you eat something for dinner young lady.” I cannot help but to smile at her. We wait a few hours before we leave the shelter not wanting to walk out into the storm and get picked up by the monster. My grandfather yawns as he watches my grandmother.
She starts coughing, trying to hide it. I know that she sick, it one of the main reasons why I came here to live with her. I do not want her to have to worry about this big house. I do not know what I would do if I lost her. She is the only person these last couple of years to show that she loves me. We, meaning my grandfather and I, venture out to check to make sure everything is clear before my grandmother comes out of the shelter. She walks out as usual mad and fussy because of the fact we baby her. My stomach turns as I give her a slight smile. “Child go straight to bed. You look like you have seen a spirit and I do not wish for you to pass out on us.” She says sternly.
I nod not daring to say no to my grandmother. After getting everyone inside and knowing everything will be just find I sigh as I had up to my room. As I get close to my door, I lay my head up against the door frame. I listen to the wind, as it has calmed down. I stand straight again and walk into to my room. I get to my bed, kicking off my shoes I curl under my blankets. As I fall fast sleep the same dream happens but it a bit different.
(NIGHTMARE)
It was a day after my fifteen birthday. I was so excited; my uncle was coming to see me. He had just got back from war. My other uncle could never stand him as far as he could throw him. He always told my aunt that he was a bad influence on all of us. I never understood it. I was moving my aunt’s vase as she asked me to when the phone rang. I heard my aunt talking when a loud ear-piercing scream came through the house. I froze as my uncle ran from the living room to the kitchen in heartbeat.
I gasped as the words slipped from my aunt’s mouth. “He is dead.” was all she could manage. My uncle looked up at me, getting up he walked over to me. “Are you happy now, Clementine? He is dead because of you. because of your stupid birthday.” As the words left his mouth, I felt a hard slap across my face.
(FLASHES TO THE HOSPITAL)
Beeb... Beeb...BEEP… was a constant in my ear. I heard a faint voice. My grandmother was there she was yelling. But at who I did not know… so badly I wish to wake up… I heard a male voice talking to my grandmother… as another person is crying…. Before I force my eyes open, I hear my grandmother tell someone “You are lucky I am letting her stay with you. The moment she turns eighteen she will come live with me” Wait my AUNT is here???
(NIGHTMARE ENDS)
I wake in a heartbeat as that memory makes my blood run cold, and my bones ache. I move the covers and look at my leg and start crying, as the scars of the past haunt me of that horrible night. “Thank god it was all just a scary memory turned into a horrible nightmare.” I say to myself as I cover back up and fall back to sleep. A few weeks has gone by since the day I started watching Ella, she is such a sweetheart. She is also very smart and noisy for little devil. Just yesterday she asked if she could do my homework when I go to college. I cannot help but to smile at how silly she can truly be. Poor girl, my grandmother told me about how her mother died. It quite sad really, but that is a story for another day. I yawn as I roll over and look at my clock. Weird usually Ella is here by now waking me up trying to make sure that I am up for the day. I sit up and look at my alarm.
That is strange my alarm clock is off. I know for a fact that I had it on so that I could get up and have breakfast done by time she got here. I shrug as I look over at my window and smile. Its beautiful day, maybe Ella and I should go down to the park. She loves to go there anymore and look at the ducks and chase them. She might have to be a grownup at home to help her dad, but not here. She will be a small child if I can help it. I stretch, I get to my feet and head for my shower. Knowing that I will need one if I plan to be around Ella. She has a strong since of smell. She tells my grandfather off daily about how he stinks.
After my shower I get dressed and braid my hair. Walking out of my room I hear laughter downstairs. Okay what is going on? I think to myself. I walk back to my bed and slip my slippers on. I hear someone mumbling, I narrow my eyes knowing what that silly little girl had done. I cannot believe that she thought that she could play me. oh boy does she have no idea what is coming to her. I think as I slowly and quietly sneak down the stairs... Seeing that Ella is right there in the entrance. This is going to be too easy. I smirk to myself. I slowly walk over and grab her. She squeals trying to get out of my reach. I start tickling hoping that just maybe she will know that you cannot fool me.
She shrugs as she goes back to talking to my grandmother. I walk into the kitchen and start breakfast. I hear my grandfather rough voice as he storms into the house. “Clementine, I have a surprise for you. I need you to come outside.” He says with a smile. I nod, as I follow him. He walks out the front door, I soon follow and gasp. My uncle’s truck is setting there by his all sparkly and new just like before…. Before he was hit by a semi…. I start crying as I run over and look at it. “We all know that you loved this old truck. he loved you so much Clementine.” He walks up patting the truck. “She is yours Clementine. We will go tomorrow to get her in your name. Now go eat before your grandmother gets mad at us.” He replies. I shake my head and walks back to the house, as I walk inside, I hear them laughing and joking bout. I cannot help but to see how they both seem happy with the other is company. I walk straight to the kitchen. I try to keep the tears back as I start cooking breakfast. I know that no matter what my uncle will never come home again. Least I have something of him. I hear Ella laughing and screaming, as my grandmother laughs and tells her to stop moving. I shake my head and smirks as I flip the bacon.
Those two will be the death of me, but lease they get along. I know that no matter what Ella will have my family to think of as a family. Also, to know that I would never let anything happened to her. She is safe and that is all that is matter. As they came in, we all finally sat down and started eating breakfast. She already started to tell me about her day. How she wanted us to go to the park and to enjoy everything. Her laugh made me smile. I close my eyes as a smile spreads across my face. We get done eating, as Ella looks at me. “Hey Clementine, since this is the last day before you start college. Can we please go to the park?” she asks. I nod in response as I put the dishes in the sink.
