3 years later...
"Wolfie girl! So help me God! If you don't get that damn dog, I'll take him off!" Momma Beth boomed. I looked around to find Max hiding under the table, shaking.
"What did he do?" I questioned.
"He pissed on my rug!" Momma Beth said accusingly. I walked into the kitchen and crouched down on the floor. I sniff the wet spot tentatively, before chuckling slightly. I cleared my throat before meeting her gaze and my smile faded. I cleared my throat and adjusted my face.
"Momma Beth, that ain't pee. That's sweet tea." I said quietly.
"Like hell, that's sweet tea! Sadie! Get in here!" Momma Beth was on a mission.
"Granny, what the hell are you goin’ on about? It's eleven at night!" Sadie looked under the table at a shaking Max and then at me.
"Momma Beth thinks Max peed on the rug." I whispered.
"I don't think it! I know it dammit! That dog is doin’ it to spite me!" Momma Beth bellowed.
"God dammit Granny! I spilt sweet tea there earlier. Now calm down. River, please take poor little Max outside before he really does piss on the rug." Sadie ran a hand down her face as Momma Beth stood stupefied with her mouth hanging open like a fish.
"Yes, ma'am. Come here Max." Max was a ninety pound, blue pit with gray eyes. For such a large animal, he was a coward. He waddled out from under the table and followed me outside.
"Sorry Max. Momma Beth just doesn't like you." I said as I rubbed his head. He just leaned into me and lay his big head on my knees. He was the runt of the litter and was tiny compared to the other puppies, but from the second I laid eyes on him I knew I was going to bring him home. Max has been my best friend ever since. If truth be told, he was my only friend.
I spent about an hour outside with Max before bringing him inside and up the stairs to my room. I had grown used to these outbursts from Momma Beth. Blue said it was because we were natural enemies, and she had to let her aggression out somehow, so she chose to let it out on Max. But I just felt like she didn't like dogs.
I was finishing up my homework when I heard Momma Beth and Sadie talking downstairs.
"Zachariah is taking over for Mr. Thompson." Sadie told Momma Beth.
"He's just a boy. What's Mr. Thompson thinking?" Momma Beth scolded.
"Granny, you know it's different for them. At eighteen, werewolves are grown adults. That’s when they usually take over the pack for their fathers." Sadie said with a sigh. Werewolves? My ears perked up.
"Hmph! Not Wolfie girl. She's goin’ to be a doctor. Did she tell you?" Momma Beth chuckled.
"A doctor? Oh my! She will make us proud. I love that little girl. I hope she stays our little girl forever." My chest swelled with pride at their words.
"Whatchoo mean? Of course, she's always gonna be our Wolfie girl." I heard Sadie sigh loudly.
"At eighteen, they're full-grown. What if she leaves us?" I didn't miss the break in Sadie's voice and my heart squeezed in my chest. I'd never leave Momma Beth and Sadie. They meant too much to me.
"Shhh now. You gonna jinx things. Get out of your head Sadie Lynn. She's gonna be a big fancy doctor, and then she's gonna take care of Momma Beth. Maybe I'll get a dog and it will piss on her rug." Sadie laughed loudly, and I had to bite back one of my own.
"Granny, Max didn't piss on your rug. You need to apologize to him."
"I ain't apologizing to no dog." Momma Beth said sourly. I giggled to myself while Max snored loudly from his bed in the corner of my room. I packed my books back up and stripped down before crawling into bed.
"River... River you have to wake up. RIVER!" Blue’s urgent voice yelled at me in my head, forcing me to consciousness.
"Blue, oh my God. What?" I questioned as I forced myself awake.
"River, you need to get to Momma Beth. Tell her to cast the scent-cloaking spell." Blue’s words were urgent as she pushed me to get up.
"What? Why? Go back to sleep." I tried to turn over but I felt Blue force herself forward and race down the stairs.
"What the hell Blue!" I screamed as I felt myself being thrown to the back of my mind.
"Elizabeth! Elizabeth!" Blue’s frantic voice called out.
"Wolfie girl, what's wrong?" Momma Beth's large frame filled her bedroom door way. She looked up at me and froze before taking several steps back.
"Where's River, wolf?" Momma Beth said sternly.
"She's here. " Elizabeth, I need you to cast the scent-cloaking spell, now." Blue demanded.
"Not until you tell me why?"
"She's about to go into heat. You have 8 minutes. If you don't cloak her scent, this house will be swamped with male wolves looking to mate. Is that what you want?" Blue growled.
"Don't you talk to Momma Beth like that, Blue! Say you’re sorry now!" I spat.
"I apologize for my rudeness." Blue mumbled.
Momma Beth didn’t say anything, she just waved us forward into her room. She pulled out an old leather-bound book from under her bed and skimmed through it until she found the page she wanted. Her eyes closed and she began chanting fervently. After a few minutes, the chanting stopped and her eyes popped open.
"Now, you bring River back! NOW!" Momma Beth thundered, causing the walls to shake. Blue released her control instantly, and I was thrown forward.
"Momma Beth, what's heat?" I asked timidly. Momma Beth sighed. She seemed just relieved I was back and grabbed my hands.
"It's like a menstrual cycle but for werewolves. It only happens twice a year. It's the only time you can get pregnant. But the problem is, your scent gets so strong. It calls to the males for miles around. And come they will." She got up and walked into the kitchen. I followed close behind her as she placed the kettle on the stove.
"You'll have to stay home for a couple of weeks. I'll call the school in the morning. Tell them you're sick. I'll have Sadie pick your school work up on the way home. You gotta stay in the house. You hear me, Wolfie girl?" Momma Beth glanced up at me to make sure I understood.
"Yes, ma'am. Momma Beth, why is it called heat?" Momma Beth looked at me with sad eyes.
“Oh baby. It's going to feel like your whole body is on fire. It's a fire only your mate can put out." As soon as she finished speaking I felt sweat start to pool on my forehead and my head began to spin.
"Momma Beth, I don't feel so good." I said wearily. I looked over to find pity written all over her face.
"I know baby. First you'll feel hot and sweaty. Then you'll be filled with a blinding lust. Slowly, it'll start to wind down... then it's over. Go take a cold shower, Wolfie girl. This hell is just beginning." She said, and with that she got up from her seat at the kitchen table and went to her room. Closing the door behind her.
The night seemed to creep on. With every second, my body felt hotter and hotter. Sweat dripped from my skin in rivers. The ice-cold showers I took barely touched the furnace burning within me. Blue had all but disappeared, leaving me alone to endure the "heat" alone.
Over the next several days, I burned. I'd hear knocks on our door and deep booming voices, but Momma Beth always turned them away. Occasionally, I could hear the old woman chanting downstairs, what I assumed was a scent-cloaking spell. No matter what went on in the house, nothing distracted me from the flames that continued to burn me from the inside out.
After about a week, I started to feel tingles along with the burning. The urge to go find someone to ravish me became overwhelming. I desperately wanted to feel another's touch. I found my hand had a mind of its own at times. I'd fall asleep and awaken to my hand massaging my slit. Eventually, I gave up trying to stop it and just gave in to the lust. At the end of the second week, I was exhausted, but the fire had finally gone out.
