Chapter 2 Out Of The Frying Pan And Into The Fire

1620 Words
When Flora reached out, feeling the intense, metallic scent of blood, which made her shiver. She couldn’t afford to linger. Stumbling to her feet, clutching her neck, she fled desperately, even ignoring her lost shoes, running barefoot. Before she left, Flora glanced back and saw a pair of cold, red eyes staring at her from the pitch-black attic. Those eyes seemed to burn into her very soul… Understanding the danger of her situation, Flora avoided the crowded areas and chose a secluded path instead. At this point, she was teetering on the edge of collapse. Her eyes were glazed, her feverish skin flushed with delicate pink, and her bare, delicate feet were faltering. Flora knew that if she continued like this, her body would be irreparably damaged, even if her identity remained undisclosed. So, when she passed a pool, she jumped in without a second thought. The splash was significant. And the faint, sweet scent of a woman from moments before made a passing man stop in his tracks. The man was tall, with broad shoulders and long legs, his slender form clad in a bespoke, luxurious black suit. The intricate and exquisite design of the suit paled in comparison to the man’s nearly flawless visage. His ice-blue hair fell to his shoulders, his deep-set eyes resembled a mysterious dark sea, and his striking features seemed almost divine. As he lifted his long lashes, his blue eyes, calm and profound, locked onto the girl sinking in the pool. Just as Flora was on the verge of losing consciousness, a hand adorned with a vintage ruby ring, pale and slender, reached through the water towards her. The dappled light reflected off the hand and the beautiful ruby, giving it an almost divine aura of redemption. The touch of the man’s skin on her wrist made Flora shiver. Dragged ashore, the weakened and drenched Flora lay on the ground, coughing and struggling. Soon, a crowd gathered around her. Flora feared her identity had been exposed and that these people were coming to capture her. But the crowd ignored her entirely and quickly knelt, showing deep respect to the man before her. " Please forgive us, Duke Lebert. It was our mistake! " " We apologize for disturbing the Duke. We hope you will pardon us! " Duke Lebert? The most prestigious noble and richest man in the galaxy whom the original owner had sought to seduce? Her wet lashes fluttered as Flora, summoning her remaining strength, cautiously looked up, only to meet his gaze. Duke Lebert had piercing blue eyes. Like a dangerous, dark sea, his gaze felt invasive, as if he could see through her very soul. In stark contrast to her disheveled state, he stood there with an imposing and mature aura, his noble and aloof demeanor inducing feelings of inferiority. He was a male beastman she dared not provoke. Flora lowered her eyes, too afraid to look at him any longer. But her silence didn’t mean she went unnoticed. Especially in her disheveled, blood-soaked state. As the crowd hesitated, a sudden scream from the direction of the attic caused a massive uproar! A servant, with a serious expression, whispered urgently in Duke Lebert’s ear. In the next moment, a group of neatly dressed soldiers surrounded Flora. The soldiers’ cold, emotionless voices cut through the commotion. " Sir, we’ve located the genderless suspected Flora Vitalia! Genetic information matches! All fingerprints and blood samples are consistent! " After the report, the soldiers’ icy, sharp gaze fixed on Flora. "Flora Vitalia! We suspect you of murdering a B-rank male beastman and a top-tier S-rank female who was already matched! Now, we have the authority to arrest you! You will face prosecution from the Hawkins family, the Clara family, and the Female Protection Association! The interstellar court will then pronounce your final sentence! " At these words, the surrounding chaos erupted even further. " Oh my God! Jenny Clara is dead? Killed by this genderless person?! " " What about the top-tier males matched with Jenny Clara? " " She’s gone mad! How dare she kill a woman? The Female Protection Association and the Clara family will never let her off the hook! She’s doomed… " Surrounded by countless distrustful accusations, the already fragile Flora nearly fainted from anger. "I... didn't kill anyone..." Her weak voice was drowned out by the noisy discussions about her. Everyone looked down at her coldly. Perhaps emboldened by Duke Leibert's earlier intervention, Flora mustered the courage to reach out for help. But before her fingertips could touch Duke Leibert's trousers, a nearby soldier shouted nervously, " Watch out! She's trying to attack Duke Leibert! " A cold flash of electricity struck, and Duke Leibert saw that slender, almost transparent, pale hand drop powerlessly from his feet. Heavy metal shackles locked her fragile wrists and ankles. The unconscious figure, with tightly closed eyes, clad in brightly colored clothes and makeup, looked both ridiculous and pitiful... As he watched the soldiers roughly take the unconscious Flora away, Duke Leibert frowned slightly. The leading officer, seeing this, thought Duke Leibert was displeased with their inadequate protection and quickly knelt on one knee, bowing and apologizing. " Duke Leibert, we deeply apologize for this heinous incident occurring on your estate. Rest assured, the Interstellar Court will handle this matter with the utmost severity! " The officer noticed Duke Leibert seemed even more displeased, causing him to break out in a cold sweat. Fortunately, the Duke said nothing, merely nodding coldly before leaving. When Flora woke up, her entire body was sore and weak. As she moved, the shackles on her hands and feet clinked with a metallic sound. Thinking about the wariness and suspicion of those around her before she fainted, and the dark, cold, airtight prison she was in now... Flora felt like she could never clear her name. At this moment, her guardian spirit, arriving late, carefully chose its words, saying timidly, "Master, your situation doesn't look good... Of course, if you're lucky, you might not die but could be sentenced to life imprisonment. However, if that happens, your mission to find the Apocalypse Bringer will fail. If you can't save this interstellar world, Master, your soul will disappear completely, unable to reincarnate... " After the spirit finished speaking, Flora remained silent for a long time. With her eyes downcast, her expression was unreadable. Her long hair covered her small face as she quietly curled up in the corner, looking fragile and pitiful. At this moment, Flora was no longer in her brightly colored dress, only wearing a thin white slip that reached her knees. Her exaggerated makeup had also been washed off by robots for her to be photographed and filed. Calming down, she finally remembered that in the real world, Flora had died of illness. In the last few years of her illness, she had secluded herself, unable to do what she wanted, and hadn't even seen her foster brother one last time before passing away. That's why she had agreed to the request of the elder of a wise and ancient tribe to travel to this unfamiliar interstellar beast world to find the extreme and dangerous Apocalypse Bringer. If she completed the mission, she would gain a healthy body and live again. Unfortunately, before she could think of a way to prove her innocence, a group of stern-looking soldiers, in shining boots, had already arrived at her cell. "Take her away!" The leading officer waved his hand. Two soldiers stepped forward to escort Flora. The natural strength difference between men and women made Flora, held by her arms, wince in pain. The soldier on the right, feeling the excessively delicate and soft arm under his palm, sneaked a glance at the supposedly brutal and ruthless person. But with her head down, her black hair covering her face, he only caught a vague glimpse of her profile. Just that indistinct glance made the soldier's heart skip a beat. Glancing at the officer ahead, he quietly eased his grip... The Interstellar Court, located in the empire's most prosperous and affluent Fifth Star, was the highest court in the interstellar hierarchy. It generally only handled cases involving the royal family, the enactment or amendment of interstellar laws, and extremely severe cases. At this moment, the solemn and dignified Interstellar Court was packed with people attending the trial. Sitting in the front row at the center of the court were members of the victim's families. Sitting at the highest position, almost equal to the judge's, was the owner of the estate where the murder occurred – Duke Leibert. Due to the heinous nature of this murder case, the Interstellar Court even initiated a live interstellar broadcast, allowing those who couldn't attend to witness the trial together. At this moment, the live broadcast's comment section was scrolling rapidly. "I've seen the photo of that person being arrested. She looks so weak. Did she kill someone? And a B-grade male beastman at that..." "A barking dog never bites, haven't you heard?" "I know this Flora. She's selfish and nasty, and she's ugly too. She's been clinging to her foster brother like a leech, never letting him match with any females. Hah! Such trash should just die!" "I heard she even tried to seduce Duke Leibert? Has she even looked in a mirror?" For a moment, the entire comment section was filled with accusations and curses against Flora. It wasn't until a few top-tier males, rumored to be paired with Jenny Clapp, appeared that the topic shifted. After all, a dying criminal couldn't compare to a group of high-quality male beastmen who had lost their future mate in terms of topic appeal.
