CHAPTER 1 - THE SCHOLAR Sara's POV Bzz! Bzz! I reluctantly peeled myself out of bed, I couldn't help but groan at the ungodly hour my alarm had chosen to blare. With a sleepy swipe, I silenced the offending noise, only to be greeted by the chill of the floor against my bare feet. "Ugh, why does the floor always feel like ice in the morning?" I muttered to myself, hopping around to find my slippers. Just as I managed to wrangle my feet into my trusty, albeit slightly worn-out, slippers, my phone buzzed with a message from Max and Lily. From: LilyBear ♥ (Weirdos' Group chat) Morning, sleepyhead! Can't wait for our first day back at uni! ? 6:30 AM I couldn't help but chuckle at their infectious enthusiasm, despite my own bleary-eyed state. To: Weirdos Morning, guys! I'll meet you at the usual spot in 20. Let's tackle this second year together! 6:32 AM I scrambled to get ready and cursed under my breath at the sight of my wrinkled blouse and faded jeans. "Seriously, Sara, you couldn't spare a few minutes to iron these last night?" I scolded myself, feeling the weight of procrastination settling on my shoulders. With a sigh, I snatched up my backpack, barely avoiding a collision with Whiskers, who had chosen that exact moment to dart across my path. "Whiskers, not now!" I scolded the mischievous feline, who merely blinked innocently in response. "Great." I muttered, shooting a glare at the unrepentant cat. "Looks like it's going to be one of those mornings." Grabbing my keys and phone, I made a mental note to give Whiskers some extra treats later as an apology. Today was going to be hectic enough without adding a grumpy cat to the mix. Finally ready, I dashed out of my cramped apartment and onto the bustling streets of Nova. "Hmm." I hummed as the cool morning air greeted me, carrying with it the promise of a new academic year filled with both challenges and adventures. I approached the campus gates, the familiar sight of my two best friends, Max and Lily, waiting for me filled me with a sense of comfort and excitement. "Hey, guys! Ready for another year of academic adventures?" I exclaimed, unable to contain my enthusiasm as I joined them. Max, with his perpetually disheveled appearance but charming wit, and also gay, flashed me a grin that never failed to lift my spirits. "Oh, you bet! I can already smell the excitement...or maybe that's just the scent of overdue assignments lingering in the air." I couldn't help but chuckle at his remark. Max always had a way of finding humor in even the most mundane of situations. "Let's hope it's the former and not the latter," I replied, exchanging knowing glances with him. Lily, the perpetually optimistic and slightly scatterbrained friend, giggled in agreement. "I can't wait to dive into our new classes! Who knows, maybe this year we'll finally learn how to clone a llama or something equally bizarre." Her words never failed to bring a smile to my face. Lily's boundless enthusiasm was contagious, and I couldn't help but share in her excitement. "Who knows what surprises await us," I replied, feeling a surge of anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. Our backpacks slung over our shoulders and our hearts filled with anticipation, the three of us made our way towards our first class, ready to embark on another year of academic exploration together. The chatter and laughter of our conversation filled the air, a comforting reminder of the enduring bond we shared as friends. We made our way towards our first class. BS Biology 201 I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement mixed with a hint of apprehension. Nova Institute of Science and Technology was renowned for its diverse faculty members, each possessing their own unique quirks and eccentricities. With that in mind, I knew this semester would be no exception to the rule. "I heard Professor McGuffin has a pet iguana that he brings to class," Max remarked, his tone tinged with curiosity as he raised an eyebrow. Lily gasped in delight, her eyes widening with excitement. "No way! I've always wanted a classroom pet. Maybe I should bring my goldfish, Mr. Bubbles, for moral support." The mental image of Lily carting a goldfish bowl to class nearly made me burst out laughing. "That would certainly be a sight to see." I chuckled, shaking my head in amusement. "Well, let's hope our professors are as entertaining as ever. Who knows, maybe we'll even learn something amidst the chaos." We entered the lecture hall, I couldn't help but stifle a laugh at the sight before me. There, standing at the front of the room, was Professor McGuffin, looking every bit as eccentric as the rumors had suggested. He wore a vibrant Hawaiian shirt that clashed magnificently with his striped pants, and a pair of oversized glasses perched precariously on the tip of his nose. But what truly caught my attention was the sight of his pet iguana, lounging lazily on his shoulder as if it belonged there. Max nudged me, a mischievous glint in his eye. "I guess the rumors were true. We really do have a lizard-loving professor." I couldn't help but nod in agreement, trying to contain my laughter as I glanced over at Lily, who was already reaching for her phone with excitement. "This is going straight to my i********: feed!" She exclaimed, her fingers tapping away eagerly as she snapped a picture of the unconventional scene. --- The next class was up as we settled into our seats, the topic of conversation naturally gravitated towards the replacement for our former professor, who had retired under the whispers of being "too old". It was a subject ripe with curiosity and speculation, given our university's reputation for attracting both brilliant minds and eccentric characters. "I wonder who they're bringing in to replace Professor McSnore." Max mused, tapping his chin thoughtfully as he leaned back in his seat. Lily wrinkled her nose in mock disgust, her lips twisting into a playful grimace. "I don't know about you guys, but I'm hoping for someone with a bit more... excitement. I can't handle another semester of falling asleep in class." Her words elicited a chuckle from both Max and me, as we all shared in the collective frustration of nodding off during yet another droning lecture. "Definitely." I agreed, nodding in solidarity with Lily. "We need someone who can keep us engaged and excited about learning." As we exchanged knowing glances, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the arrival of our new professor. Whoever they were, I hoped they would bring a fresh perspective and invigorating energy to our classroom. Our conversation veered into the realm of wild speculation, I couldn't help but be swept up in the excitement of imagining what our new professor might be like. "What if they're a former astronaut turned botanist?" Max suggested, his grin widening with each word. Lily gasped dramatically, her eyes widening in mock excitement as she leaned forward in her seat. "Or maybe they're a secret spy who specializes in decoding the language of plants!" Their suggestions were so outlandish that I couldn't help but laugh, shaking my head in amusement at their overactive imaginations. "You two never cease to amaze me with your creativity," I said, still chuckling. "But as much as I love a good conspiracy theory, let's try to keep our expectations somewhat realistic. We don't want to be disappointed when our new professor turns out to be just another textbook bore." We were about to write off our playful speculation about the tweed-clad professor as a shared delusion when the door to the lecture hall swung open with a dramatic flourish, shattering the comfortable lull. A collective gasp rippled through the room, momentarily silencing even Lily's ever-chattering mouth. My heart, a hummingbird in sudden flight, lodged itself somewhere in my throat. In walked a vision, a woman whose mere presence crackled with electricity. She moved with a confidence that seemed to defy gravity, her every step radiating an invisible power. Her hair, like the iridescence of a raven's wing, cascaded down her shoulders in a way that whispered of secrets and forbidden libraries. But it was her eyes that truly stole the show. Light gray Like a stormy sky at dawn, they held a depth that seemed to pull you in, promising untold stories and hidden mysteries. For a fleeting moment, our gazes locked. Hers, sharp and intelligent, flickered across the room, landing on me for a fraction of a second. "Is that... our new professor?" I whispered to Max and Lily, barely containing my astonishment. Max's usual grin was replaced with a cautious awe. Lily, however, let out a surprised gasp. Gone were the playful daydreams of a laid-back professor. This woman exuded an aura of sharp intelligence and an underlying steeliness. Her tailored suit fit her impeccably, her hair pulled back in a tight bun that seemed to telegraph efficiency. As she approached the front of the class, the silence grew thick. She didn't waste time with theatrics. With a swift movement, she wrote her name on the board in bold lettering, Dr. Lia Ramirez The sharp click of the chalk against the board seemed to echo the unspoken warning in the air. "Good morning, class." She began. Her voice wasn't harsh, but it held a quiet command that demanded attention. "I'm Professor Lia Ramirez, and I will be your instructor for Genetics this semester." There was a hint of a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Let's get one thing straight from the start. This is not a casual stroll through the human DNA. This is a rigorous exploration that will demand your full commitment." As she laid out the syllabus, her expectations were crystal clear. Weekly quizzes, in-depth research papers, and active participation were mandatory. A shiver ran down my spine, not from fear, but from a strange mixture of apprehension and excitement. This wasn't going to be the easy A we'd joked about. "I have a low tolerance for slackers." She continued, her gaze sweeping across the room, lingering for a moment on each student. "But for those who are willing to put in the effort, I can promise you a semester of challenging and rewarding learning." Max, ever the optimist, leaned over and whispered. "Maybe she'll be tough, but she'll be a great teacher." Lily, usually fearless, just nodded silently, her eyes wide. "Get ready to introduce yourselves." She uttered, facing the class with high confidence. As the introductions began, I couldn't help but steal a glance at her again. Professor Ramirez turned to face the class, her gaze sweeping across the room like a searchlight. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs as her eyes met mine for a fleeting moment. Beautiful They were a light gray, flecked with ash, and held a depth that seemed to pull me in, a silent promise of untold knowledge and hidden passions. For a heartbeat, time seemed to stand still. The air crackled with an intangible energy, a mix of nervousness and something else entirely. A flicker of something sparked in her eyes, a challenge or maybe even a question. Perhaps it was just my imagination, but I could have sworn I saw a hint of amusement there too. Then, just as quickly as it started, the connection broke. Professor Ramirez moved on, her gaze continuing its methodical scan of the students. Her posture remained rigid, but a hint of amusement flickered in her eyes when she heard Max's slightly nervous introduction. When it was my turn, my voice trembled slightly as I spoke. "Hi, I'm Sara Kensington," I said. "I'm a second-year student majoring in biology and I'm interested in the deep aspects of human DNA." Professor Ramirez's gaze met mine, her expression unreadable. "An interesting choice, Ms. Kensington," She said, her voice cool. "Let's hope your interest translates into dedication." I nodded, unable to tear my gaze away from hers. There was something about her that drew me in, a magnetic pull that I couldn't quite resist. What did you just do to me, Professor Ramirez? --- Hello!
