Elena pov
I stared into his eyes.
Jet black- deep and consuming, like a black hole that pulled everything into its orbit. They were mysterious, dangerous, and disturbingly beautiful. I found myself drawn to it, forgetting for a second where I was and the surrounding.
As I stood there, silently appreciating those eyes, a voice broke the moment.
"Sir".
I flinched inwardly.
Someone entered the room- his assistant. I quickly turned my head away, heat creeping up my neck. It was rude to stare for so long, especially at a man like him.
Yet the tension between us lingered. Thick. A pulled I couldn't deny.
I had never felt anything like this before. Maybe it was his presence. Maybe it was his beauty. Or maybe the danger wrapped so tightly around him.
I was still lost in thought when the assistant stepped closer.
"Miss Elena, how are you feeling today?" he asked politely.
"Oh I'm feeling much better now. Thank you ," I replied smoothly.
"You can call me Max,"he said with a small smile.
"Well, thenyou can call me Elena," I replied in return.
As soon as I said that, I felt it again- his gaze.
I looked towards Adrian. He was already seated at the table, his posture relaxed yet commanding. His eyes followed the brief exchange between max and me, sharp and unreadable. The intensity of his stare made my stomach twist- nervousness mixing with something dangerously close to delight.
I had never reacted like this before.
It's those eyes, I thought. Yes... those eyes
"Now that you are done", Adrian said coolly, his voice cutting through the room , "Please take your seat Miss Elena".
"Oh- yeah", I replied, snapping out of it.
I walked towards the table and sat down opposite him. Max took the seat beside me.
As I reached for the food, finally grateful for the distraction, Max turned toward me, clearly curious on his face.
"Well, Elena," he said carefully," Since you're feeling better now....may I asked you a question?"
My hand paused mid-air.
Then I resume my movement, keeping my expression composed. "Hmm.... yes. Why not? Go ahead."
Oh God, I groaned inwardly. Why now?Why not let me eat first? Question can wait-my stomach can't.
I lifted my head and met his gaze calmly. "Ask me. What do you want to asked ? Or should I say... what's left from your investigation?" I added lightly. "About the Incident that happened to me".
The room fell silent.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw Adrain staring at me. I couldn't tell what amused him, suddenly his lips curved into a faint smirk- as if he had read my thought, as if he had seen my internal frustration and found it entertaining.
Then he spoke.
"Since you already know, Miss Elena", Adrain asked slowly," I won't go around the circle. I'll ask you directly."
My heartbeat spiked.
"What is your motive".
I froze.
"Motives?" I repeated, staring at him. "What motivates are you taking about?" I let out a short, incredulous laugh.
"Are you saying I did all this just to enter your territory and gather information against you?"
I leaned back slightly in a casual tone. "You're being paranoid, huh? I don't have any motive".
His gaze sharpened. He stared at me deeply - too deeply- like he was peeling away my disguise I had worked years to perfect.
Then he spoke again, his voice colder this time.
"The cargo", he said. "Where is it? You and your team seized my hundred billion dollars weapons shipment."
Silence.
Shoot he knows, now what to do I can't say no that I didn't do it. Oh lord! what is these situations. Ok let handle this properly.
I set my culinary down slowly and looked at him.
Awkwardly - but honestly
"I was involved but it was an order", I admitted.
Why not he had investigated me already. He is a freaking Mafia and hold power and money getting my information is like a piece of cake for him. So it's not surprising he knows one way the other. He is testing me. And I know it.
His expression hardened instantly.
The warmth vanished.
He looked at me closely this time-no smirk, no curiosity- only danger.
The coldness in his eyes sent a warning straight down my spine.
Not fear-calcultion.
Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair, fingers interlaced, posture relaxed in a way that was far more threatening than anger. Power sat on him naturally, like a second skin. The room felt smaller, heavier, as if the walls themselves were listening.
"Who order you?" He said.
I held his gaze, refusing to be the first to look away. "From higher up obviously", I said calmly. "People you and I both know exist".
Adrian's lips curved into something that wasn't a smile.
"You admit so easily", he said. Most people deny until the last breath".
"That's because people lie when they're scared", I replied evenly. "And you know already so what the point of lieing, Mr Mafia".
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes- interest, perhaps.
"You're either very brave or very stupid", he said quietly.
I picked up my glass, too a slow sips of water, and placed it back down carefully. My hands were steady.
"Maybe but that what's needed to survive for now". I said calmly without breaking my composure.
"You seized a shipment worth a hundred billion". Adrian continued, his voice calm, deadly. "Weapon that are meant to cross three borders. Men die because of that interruption".
I met his eyes. "Men die everyday because of those weapons too".
The air snapped.
Max sucked in a breath.
Adrian's jaw tightened, just slightly - barely noticeable, but I caught it. He leaned forward now, elbows resting on the table, closing the distance between us without moving an inch closer.
"You're standing in my territory , Miss Elena", he said softly.
"I'm aware of Mr De Luca", I replied. "You asked for the truth and I gave it".
His eyes darkened.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Adrian stood.
The scrape of the chair against the floor echoes like a gunshot.
"Breakfast is over," he said coldly. "Max, leave us".
Max hesitated, looked at me once-then at Adrian - and stood up. "Yes, sir".
As Max walked away, my pulse finally kicked harder.
Alone.
Just the two of us.
Adrian stepped closer, stopping just in front of me. I had to tilt my head slightly to meet his eyes now.
His gaze lingered on me- Sharp, dangerous, unreadable.
And I know one thing for certain.
I had just crossed a line.
