The echoed of betrayal

583 Words
Night had settled heavily over the cliffside. The wind howled against the rocks, carrying the faint scent of pine and wet earth. Elena lay on the bed, tossing and turning. Her muscles ached from month of inactivity and sweat clung to her skin. Her thoughts were sharp, instinctive and cold. She could feel her heart thumping in her chest, every breath shallow and deliberate. The nightmare clawed her mind, dragging her back to the mission she barely survive. Fragments of memory tore through her consciousness. Gunshot. wind ripping through the cliff. A figure emerging from behind. Adam. His smirk. Elena didn't flinched. Calmly loaded her owned bullets into her gun. "Elena.... the bullets are fake", he said, confidence dripping each from each word. Her pulse surged. She didn't flinched but her fingers gripped her gun tighter, knuckles white. Huh...when did he change it? she thought coldly. Not that I didn't expect this. First rule: trust your enemy more than friend. A flash of anger shot through her chest. Then pain. A shot whizzed past her shoulder. Spark of light, the clang of metal. She twisted instinctively, heart hammering. Focus. The target - the gangster in the convoy - he mustn't escape. One mistake and an innocent lives are at stake. She lunged. Pain burned in her ribs. A grunt escaped her lips. The gun slipped from her hand. Blood ran against warm her skin. Her mind raced-not at Adam, not at the betrayal - but at the mission. His eyes - hatred, desperation, humiliation. Words echoed in her mind: " You...you and Ava...you humiliated me !". Her body moved instinctively, striking , dodging - but the detailed blurred, fragmented like the nightmare itself. Pain and adrenaline mingled, making her both alive and out of control. A Kick. A twist. He fell. Her breath came in sharp, uneven burst. She raised the gun, muscle tremble from the efforts, senses sharp and focused. The mission can't failed. The gangster's escape is not an option. Adam's gasp, the blood on his lips, the sudden convulsion -he crumpled to the ground. Silence. The wind tore across the cliffside. Her chest heaved. Her pulse raced as if she were still falling. Then - a slow , deliberate clap from the trees. Calm. Too calm. " Impressive" , a voice said " Agent 009.... capable , strong ......and beautiful." Black mask. Boots crunching on gravel. Every movement precise, dominant. Authority radiant from his presence. Elena froze, every nerve on edge, every muscle tense. Fear and calculation collided - her instinct screamed fight or flight but her mind analyzed, measured. Focus. Mission first. Whoever this is, they are not my priority.....yet. " So fragile ", the voice whispered. Before she could react, a dizzying force slammed into her chest. Her stomach lurched. The cliff disappeared beneath her feet. Darkness, rocks, wind - everything blurred. " Sleep well , Agent 009 ". .............. Elena jolted awake. Sweat drenched her hair. Heart hammering. Hand gripping the sheets, shaking. Breath uneven . Muscle stiff from tension. Her mind replayed fragments of the nightmare: Adam betrayal, his confession, the mask man's presence, the cliff. Fear, frustration and cold determination coiled deep inside her. Every nerve screamed to move, to calculate, to survive. Not just Adam..... someone is using him......someone else is involved she thought. And the mission...the target... I can't failed them. Her body was trembling slightly but her mind was already racing. Thinking for her next move. **********
