Where’s your mommy?
During the project meeting, Cassie received a text from José. He was going to be on the street soon to visit the houses whose meter readings were still overdue. She was distracted for the remainder of the discussion, hoping it would be over in time to meet him.
Once the others started gathering their things, Cassie forwarded the text to Natalie, who kept her goodbyes short and gestured to Cassie to go ahead.
Natalie herded her team onto the porch, waving to them as they went to their cars. Cassie was already by the truck with José, who rummaged in the back and emerged with a neon vest for Cassie.
“You’ll be training with me, okay? Now, don’t get too ambitious. If there’s a complaint and this gets out at the Authority, I’ll lose my job.”
