There was a time when the Gods and Goddess could choose to live among the normal folk of Earth. Unnoticed until chosen. They would feast with them, play with them, work with them, love them, sleep with them... It was a life much simpler... –––––– Light danced herself around the outline of darkened clouds. Contrasting herself - bright golden around dark grey. Eleanor felt a cool breeze rustle beneath her hair and rest upon the back of her shoulders and neck. Today was much cooler; the last few weeks had been warm and muggy. The cooler weather was a beautiful greeting to Eleanor as she despised the heat, what little they encountered anyway in Norway. Breathing in the crisp air and slightly shuddering as she did, Eleanor gently placed a woven reed basket down onto the dirt near the front of her mothers farm. Stretching greatly, Eleanor lifted thick blankets and furs onto the fence, letting them bask in the rarely there sun. Eleanor lived with her mother and brother on a farm just outside the town Haggafoss. They used to live peacefully, with only a few merchants coming and going; selling live stock or grains to the villagers in the town. Now, with the exciting news of the Kings son Erik wishing to marry Eleanor, their little farm was blossoming with merchants and even folk from the town all buying and trading goods; but all honestly and secretly they were there to see the lady whom stole the heart of Erik the Burly. Today felt peaceful, like it used to. Eleanor was happy about that. She hated the fact that her little farm was now a tourist attraction and she was the dragon on for show. She wished that her life would go back to being normal and quiet before Erik decided he loved her. It was all over her winning a duel with him. "Eleanor?" A sweet voice interrupted Eleanor's thoughts. She slowly turned around to face the small frame of her mother, a bright smile on her sunken features as she walked down to the fence Eleanor was at. "My beautiful dotter." Hilda whispered as she stopped to lean on the wooden fence. "The winter will be a harsh one. I wanted to air the furs and blankets before we truely needed them." Eleanor explained as she bent down to pick a blanket from the basket. Hilda smiled warmly as she watched her daughter. "That is all good. But that is not why I have come down here." Hilda explained, making Eleanor stop her actions and face her mother. "Sigurd is with Harald and his brothers, they have gone on a quest that I do not know." "Well I hope he is safe with the Gods watchful eyes." Eleanor said as she placed the last blanket on the fence, choosing to straighten the fabric out carefully as she listened to her mother. "Erik also came by." Hilda added making Eleanor tense and turn to her mother, noticeable fear washing over her features as Hilda only smiled and beamed happiness. "What did he want?" Eleanor asked rather bitterly making Hilda scoff and cross her arms over her chest. "He wishes to see you and walk by the river later, if you are not already occupied." Hilda said as she watched Eleanor roll her eyes and bend down to pick the basket up. "Unfortunately, I am busy." Eleanor stated before placing the basket on her hip, turning away from her mother and marching away to goats. "I want nothing to do with the sly, unfaithful man!" Eleanor exclaimed as she walked briskly away making Hilda roll her eyes but scoff with a hint of humour. "He is the son of a King, Eleanor. If he wishes to marry you then so be it!" Hilda exclaimed back as she pushed herself off the fence to follow her daughter. "Besides, you and him will breed excellent sons." Hilda laughed at the thought. "Son of a King or not, he needs to learn to treat women with respect. He expects me to be docile and compliant; he thought wrong." Eleanor stated, as she threw the basket down to the ground beside her and walked into the goats enclosure. "Erik Denverson, is a vile human." Eleanor mumbled as she patted a few goats as she walked to the feed in the corner. "I would never wish to bear him sons; I do not wish to bed him." Eleanor spoke, angrily fisting her hand into the feed and yanking it out again, throwing the feed onto the ground. "He can have all the thralls in the land but he wants me?" Eleanor said as she finished feeding the goats and stomped out of their enclosure. "Are you done yet?" Hilda asked as she watched her daughter barge past her towards the chickens. "No!" Eleanor screamed as she turned back to face her mother before crossing her arms and turning around heading to the chickens mumbling to herself as she did. ••• Afternoon came rather quickly. Luckily for Hilda and the rest of Haggafoss, Eleanor had stopped her childish tantrum and chose to walk among the village. After her mother told her to: "go get some more dyes for the wool", it was a good excuse for Hilda to be alone for a few moments while she cooked for dinner. Haggafoss was a small village but large with merchants and tradesmen as well as wealthy men and their wives. Littered among them of course; the warriors of the battlefield - both men and women lived, before they traveled to war or across the sea in search of new lands and wealth. Eleanor straightened her back as she walked, her posture severely uneven due to the heavy loads of furs and feed she carried that morning. Whispering 'hellos' to some folk as she passed them, Eleanor noticed people seperate themselves allowing a dominant presence to strut their way through and to Eleanor's displeasure, it was Erik whom held that presence. She held her breath as Erik smiled widely when he spotted her and strutted over to her. "Eleanor my love, I'm so happy to see you." Erik said as he pulled her into a hug. It was all for show for the people around as Erik muttered "play along" forcefully into her ear making Eleanor stiffen and swallow hard. "Walk with me, I have some words about our wedding." Erik said as he pulled away from Eleanor's emotionless embrace to grab her forearm and quickly usher her away from the markets and prying eyes, down a secluded path surrounded by huts. "I dislike the way you're holding me, Erik." Eleanor spat when they were away from the villages. "I dislike the fact you won't give me your f*****g time of day." Erik spat back, making Eleanor roll her eyes and shove him off herself before crossing her arms in front of her chest, more to seem intimidating then a defensive mechanism. "I am a farmer, most of my time goes to looking after my farm." Eleanor stated making Erik roll his eyes and push Eleanor up against the wall of a hut; capturing her arms to roughly place them beside her on the wall of the hut. "Alright then, but that still doesn't explain why you won't come warm my bed at night." "I'm a farm-" "You don't work at midnight, Eleanor." Erik said as he cut Eleanor off. "I have offered so many times for you to come see me. To feel your warmth wrap around me." Erik added making Eleanor's eyes widen before she attempted to break free from Erik's grasp. Erik was quicker and much more bigger then she was; he quickly captured her again only this time turning her around and harshly pushing her against the hut, again. "Erik! No!" Eleanor exclaimed, her words being muffled due to her face planted into the wood. Erik pushed his upper body weight onto Eleanor's back as his hands grip and pull at the skirt of Eleanor's dress. "Just once before we are married, let me feel your warmth wrap around me while I pound myself into you." Erik mumbled harshly into Eleanor's ear. Eleanor struggled, wriggling to free herself from Erik as tears began to blur her vision. "Don't deny me - your future husband." "Erik!" In a rush of wind Erik had removed himself from Eleanor. Her skirt falling back down to her feet as Erik only chuckled darkly. "Ah, Ubbe. What a great surprise." Erik stated sarcastically. "Although not great timing." Erik mumbled as he turned to look at Eleanor whom only quickly moved herself from the wall to stand silently behind Erik. "Father wishes to talk to you about the upcoming raids East, he has spoken to The Seer and wishes to speak with you about it." Ubbe said as he took a step closer to Erik only making Erik take a step towards him as well. "Fine. Can I trust you to accompany Eleanor home? It's getting dark and I don't want her to walk alone." Erik muttered before turning to Eleanor and kissing her passionately before turning back to Ubbe and walking past him, nudging his shoulder violently with his own as he walked out of the secluded path. Eleanor - once she knew Erik was gone - ran over to Ubbe and threw herself into his open arms and started to cry. "I-I didn't know what to do, I'm so happy you found us when you did Ubbe." Eleanor sobbed into Ubbe's chest as he held her close, resting his chin upon her head and listening to her cry as his heart broke into small pieces at the sound. "I'm sorry El, I'm sorry I didn't come sooner. I heard you yell his name and then no and I-I should've walked by sooner." Ubbe mumbled into Eleanor's brown hair as he held her tighter. They stayed like that for what felt like hours. Ubbe holding Eleanor to his chest as she sobbed. Both Erik and Ubbe were brothers. Sons of the ruthless King Denver. Although they were related by blood, both held different appearances and personalities. The only two things they both held, was their muscular frame and height. Excluding the same father and mother. Ubbe held a gentle heart and soul which was always broken and teared down by his father and brother. His blonde hair was sandy and long, he also has brown eyes that shine happiness and love. Erik, his heart and soul were cold as ice - just like his fathers. He took what he wanted without blinking an eye or caring whom got hurt due to his actions. His hair was raven black and short, contrasting his piercing blue eyes perfectly. Only one man was beautiful and it sure as hell wasn't Erik. Ubbe gently pulled Eleanor away from himself and silently lead her out of the path into the now setting sun. He held her left hand as they both walked silently through the village and out onto the outskirts, to the farm. The walk was long and silent but both didn't mind. It wasn't good for both. They both witnessed a disgusting act and now they were stewing in self pity, they both knew that. But they also didn't wish to speak about it. Once they made it to the farm, Eleanor embraced Ubbe again. Her tears had finally dried and now she was appreciative of Ubbe finding her when he did. Although she was seen at her most vulnerable state. Ubbe made sure Eleanor would be okay, he cleaned her face with water from the horses trough and kissed her forehead. "Will you be okay, El?" Ubbe asked as he placed the cloth he used onto a tree stump table. Eleanor nodded and sniffed. "I will be okay, please do not worry." Eleanor said as smiled up at Ubbe. "I do worry, for you of course." Ubbe said as he smiled down to Eleanor. "Do not worry because it will not get you far." Eleanor joked as Ubbe rolled his eyes before turning to leave. "Goodnight El." Ubbe said before he started to walk away. "Night Ubbe!" Eleanor called after him before walking into her hut.
