Tossing and turning frustrated with myself, I turn around to check the time on my night stand, 3 am, hoping that sleep will consume me, a temporary method to stop the pain.
One of the milestones in my life has turned out to be the most heartbreaking, knowing that I wont be able to get much sleep, I roll out of bed and stumble to the kitchen to get myself a glass of water. I make sure I am quiet enough not to wake Nana. As I turn around to head back to bed to my dismay, I find Nana sitting in the lounge holding onto a picture frame, and I am certain I know who and what it is.
Three weeks ago, I was so excited and optimistic, I am about to start a career after four long years studying along my best friend Sam, graduation day has finally arrived.
“Sam please hurry up” I will never understand why she takes forever to change in what seems like her hundredth dress. “Sam if you not at the door within five minutes I am leaving without you.
Waiting on Sam I look at the simple navy blue fitted dress my parents got me for graduation, I can’t wait to see them today, they have always been my biggest supporters of my dreams and aspirations. Breaking my train of thought I hear Sam coming down the stairs, in a stunning A line dress that flows just above her knees, she always has a great sense of fashion.
As we head to the auditorium where the graduation will be held, I decide to call mom and dad, after a few rings I decided to end the call, knowing that they would be waiting there for me, seeing that they have eagerly been waiting for this day, being an only child my parents tend to fuss over everything and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I smile remembering the phone call we had this morning, assuring both my parents that I am wearing the dress they got me and they locket they gifted me with especially for my graduation.
Mom, dad I love and see you soon, we love you more that anything our darling I hear them say before ending the call.
Mia Jackson, I am being called up on stage, and my eyes search for both my parents, and I cannot seem to see them, I tinge bit of hurt fills me, telling myself I will se them after the graduation.
Two hours later I frantically search for them, bumping in Sam and her parents, Hi Mr. and Mrs. Wilson so good to see you, I hug them both, congratulations Mia the excitedly say.
Sam notices the absence of my parents by my side and I assure her that I am fine, she hugged me tightly and hesitantly let me go, Sam enjoy the day and the vacation promise to call me every day I smile knowing I am going to miss her, we decided to take a month break before applying at reputable companies, her parents are going on holiday to the Bahamas and I will be going home with my parents to visit Nana in Florida, with one last hug I waved them goodbye.
I took my phone out to call my parents, only to discover my battery had died, s**t just great, I head to the dorm to put my phone on charge, as soon as there is sign of battery life, I turn it on, I try both mom and dad’s phone, strange, both numbers goes straight to voicemail, I sigh in defeat, before noticing a missed call from a unknown number, feeling angry and disappointed as to why my parents didn’t pitch for the day the have been waiting on more than myself, I decide to go lay down. As I got up from the couch, I hear my phone ring and answer it immediately.
Hello I annoyingly answer, the lady on the other end gently asks, “Is this Mia Jackson” yes, it is she I answer warily. I am calling from Lenox Hill hospital your parents have been in a terrible car accident; you need to get here immediately; without a goodbye I ended the calling praying this was some sick joke.
Sadness and guilt washing over me, I knew they wouldn’t miss it, and now I don’t even care all I want is for them to be okay.
I ran to the main reception desk, where a nurse greeted me, the room number for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson please I ask almost out of breathe, room 164, I ran as fast as my legs would allow me searching for the room, I burst into the room and see both my parents bruises, blood, IV drips, and pipes, but the next words broke me and turned my life upside down as on one of the doctors tell the attending nurses” time of death 5.30pm”
Just like that I broke down and knew my life would never be the same again.
End of flash back.
